Let me first tell what happened. My 7-year old daughter was looking at one of those leatherbound cribbage cases - something not fragile or breakable at all. One of the employees (bald and Caucasian) walks over from the counter, snatches the booklet out of her hands, and aggressively snaps at her saying, "Keep your hands to yourself and don't touch anything! This is not a store for kids!" Note, this is a store with Star Wars posters on their doors and jigsaw puzzles. My daughter and I were a bit shaken, but I said a quick sorry, and then it hit me - this kind of behavior was completely rude and inexcusable and I felt like I should have defended her and told him to back off. But then I realized if it happened to us, chances are this was not an isolated or unique incident. The same will or has already happened to others who visited this store. If they continue this kind of behavior, they are going to hit someone's else's nerve who doesn't have the same restraint that I did. So if the same happens to you and your child if you do come here, know that what they're doing is wrong, and absolutely fight back if not just for yourself, but for the rest of us this has happened to. To gain some perspective as well though, hundreds of cruise ships with tourists visit this store regularly. They have probably had incidents where kids mishandled and broke some items, so they are very defensive about it. But here's the thing - if you're in this business, you should also be educated enough to know how to deal with this respectfully with customers. Put a sign up saying "Children not permitted. Thanks for your understanding". Or you say, "I'm so sorry, we've had some incidents before and prefer children not to handle the merchandise. Thanks". That's it. Anyways, I hope this is a lesson in customer service to this store because they do carry a lot of very nice items. But many times it's not what you're selling that determines how good your business is - it's how you treat your customers. read more

I was notified that one item was sold out and they emailed to offer a replacement. They failed to reply to my response to THEIR OFFER and shipped first item without communication. We come to Alaska often and when in Ketchikan we always stop here because they have a lot of unique gifts and many from local artists. It is located along historic Creek Street. The staff are always helpful and we usually have things shipped home since some are larger pieces. When you spend a certain amount the shipping is included. We have been buying steel art for several years and needed a few smaller pieces. We started with the Little Peaks and then added some animals. Before going to Ketchikan, I did a lot of research on the best spots and everything I read said Fish Creek Company was the best gift shop! And not just in Ketchikan but in ALL of the Alaskan ports. After being through a bunch, I would have to say it IS an excellent shop. I was in Alaska for a week and honestly didn't buy many souvenirs but I did buy a couple from this shop. My Aunt has a special hummingbird connection and I bought a $15 hand painted hummingbird mug from an indigenous artist here. So unique and I found nothing like it for the entirety of the rest of my trip. I loved how many handmade items they had here from native Alaskans. Very cool and they make great gifts for others, or a beautiful souvenir for yourself. I found their prices reasonable and items VERY high quality. Staff was eager to help with anything we needed, then quick to check us out while wrapping my item with care. Fish Creek Company is right in the main area of town, so if you stop in Ketchikan, you can't avoid it even if you tried. ;) read more

I specifically went to this store to purchase a bear, eagle & wolf pendant - woolly mammoth and some other items. Since returning to Australia the item has a crack - when I emailed them, I was told it 1) it is over 10,0000 years old and 2) It had a crack when I purchased (I wouldn't have purchased if it did) as per website image - they are still using the same image, although now saying sold out (which it was not showing yesterday) if it was - so don't even update website. The customer service was POOR at best and I assume they don't care as they probably think as I'm from Australia and was on a cruise I won't be back - so no alternate offered. They have an eagle, bear & wolf pendant showing at US$99, but no offer of replacement, and this was $20 cheaper. I would have been more than willing to pay postage for new and to return other. The image shown is the alternate item on website and actually has the eagle at the top whereas the none I have has bear at the top. I would strongly recommend people look for other more reputable stores than this one. After 40+ years in the hospitality industry in senior positions, this is one of the worse cases of customer service I have seen, and I have advised friends from Oz and Hawaii that are doing Alaska cruises to not visit them. Over the past few years I had been looking for ivory jewelry. Since, elephant ivory is illegal, I researched fossilized mammoth ivory. I searched for quite a few years. Finally, I found some beautiful pieces made by local artisans on the Fish Creek Co., website. I called the store and spoke to Mykayla Phillips who helped me order a ring and large bangle bracelet. The items were shipped and in 3 days, I received a beautiful 1" bangle bracelet and ivory ring that was encased in beautiful silver. I was surprised at the weight of the silver that encased the ring! The bracelet had a good weight to it and showed some of the Schregar lines in the ivory. I was so happy with the bracelet that I later called Mykayla and ordered an beautiful, tusk necklace and pendant to match my ring. Both items arrived well packed in bubble wrap and extra cardboard. Plus, the items arrived quickly!! The craftsmanship of all items 4 items were excellent. I highly recommend the fossilized ivory from this store. read more

Recently, we did an Alaskan cruise and stopped here. The jewelry here, as well as the customer service, were the best we found in town. After I returned home, I had a concern about something I had purchased. Nothing major and more of an error I had made on the buying side. I thought to myself, "Great, I am in Phoenix and they are in Alaska. You are stuck". How wrong I was. I emailed them, had a reply within an hour. A solution to my error was offered. Camera in hand with the rest of the tourists, I wandered into a very cool store looking for gifts. This is THE store for unique gifts with a local edge to them. I found an obsidian knife with a fox jaw handle (sorry if it creeps the Yelper out, but it was a work of art). They carry a nice selection of jewelry, prints, cards, ulu knives and metal wall art too. I also bought a nice ornament to serve as an annual reminder of the amazing vacation to Alaska. This was one of the less gimmicky stores and carried some very nice things at a reasonable price.
