We went to Fishers in the City on a weekend evening for dinner. We had a reservation and were seated quickly. The service from the waitress wasn't the best. Her service was slow and she didn't do a great job explaining the portion sizes. We ended up chatting with the table beside us to understand the hot seafood tower. We shared the raw oysters with wasabi and apple granita. These were amazing! The granita leaned more apple then wasabi and made for a very refreshing bite. We also got the hot seafood tower to share for two. There were two langoustines, one half lobster, one scallop, two grilled oysters and two razor clams per person but the bulk of the meal is mussels. It came with a small side of chips and salad. The food was good but we were racing to eat it quickly before it got cold. Finally, we ordered the Scottish cheese plate to share. I really loved the range of cheeses, the frozen grapes and the orange jelly it came with. All in all, a solid seafood meal in Edinburgh! read more

Greeted warmly Though we did not have reservations, we were accommodated since we arrived at 3 PM Which begs the comment I love restaurants that accommodate early diners. Wines by the glass a bit basic. But they filled a hole I had. We had a wonderful salad that was comprised of lettuce, feta, capers, candied, peaches, walnuts it was fantastic We also had the scallop hors d'oeuvres and artistic blend of complementary ingredients Our soup was sweet potato, I think It had pumpkin seeds and a slight drizzle of something with a slight kick that wasn't too much and complemented the delicate flavor of sweet potato We also tried a white fish, Sol That had a curry sauce I can't say I was a fan of the meal because in my opinion, I was hoping the curry would be so mild It wouldn't hide the fish but in this case it did. it could've been curried tofu and I probably wouldn't have noticed that it wasn't fish. It was still put together quite well heavy gracious, not a thing for me The dessert we had was Panna cotta with some frozen cranberry squares and dollop of boysenberry? It was fine dining for sure We experienced the special treat that only occurs rarely. Every single employee on the floor assured us. When not busy. It is a tough call, but probably my favorite dinner in Edinburgh. Their menu is of course fish centric but that doesn't mean you should sleep on their sides. We got the curry and the scallops along with their octopus appetizer, olives, and a side of green beans. Plenty of high quality food for two. Service was also on point. They ran out of ingredients for our first drink choice, so the bartender came up to ask what we might like him to make! Like many places in the EU/UK, the service was friendly but hands off. We probably had one of the last seatings before close but never felt rushed. Finally, the atmosphere is causal yet fancy. I am so happy that this place was recommended by my hotel. The ambiance is amazing. It has a classy feel but plenty of nautical decorations. The bar is on the first level and the seating for the restaurant is on the upper level. The food was incredible. I had never had monkfish before, and the monkfish tacos were perfectly seasoned and not overcooked. I highly recommend getting a half dozen oysters. The brine was a bit too salty, but after pouring off the excess and having them either naked, with lemon, or with hot sauce, they were incredible. There are also other options for toppings to the oysters as well as having them cooked. For entrees we tried the grilled whole lemon sole and the linguini with king prawn and mussels. If you can only have one I would recommend the grilled sole. Literally meat fell off the bone, and the meat was so tender. Don't get me wrong, the sauce for the linguini (brown crab butter) was to die for, but for a well rounded plate I have to say the sole was better. I did come close to licking the plate for the linguini sauce though. No problems with the service. Everyone was attentive and our water was never empty. Highly recommend fishers! read more

Food was so good! We Came in late and they were able to sit Us at a the bar table. We did not have reservations. My husband had the Halibut and said it was really good and worth the price. Let's talk about what I had. I had the Parmesan salad and steamed mussels (large). So freaking good. And A LOT! I didn't come close to eating it all so do not order the large unless you are sharing. Place was lovely and pretty. Although the staff is casual and some guest were too it seemed to be more business casual. We were under dressed IMO but they didn't turn us away. Amazing seafood and wonderful service. Try the mussels and scallops, but really all the food was beautiful! Was looking for a nice but casual seafood restaurant and I think I nailed it. Ordered multiple starters of the king scallops, the prawns tempura and the pork belly bisque. Honestly would have ordered another round they were so good. For mains we ordered the surf and turf with scallops and the mussels. Probably a slight crime to order a steak at a seafood restaurant but I have no regrets as it was perfectly cooked and tender. The best seafood in Edinburgh and fantastic service and dining space! Depending on your vibe, they have tables in a quiet back room or bar/bustling main dining room. You won't be disappointed by your order--I loved the ceviche, king scallop and salmon-haddock chowder. The star of the show was definitely my halibut entree cooked in a light tomato stew with clams, mussels, shrimp and a crispy piece of toast drizzled with tomato aioli. The textures, seasonings and harmonious flavors were delightful! The ceviche in particular was so light, tangy and refreshing, the perfect combination of flavors with a burst of citrus and sweetness of tomato--it came highly recommended by the server, who also shared that this place has the best supplier in town and the family owned restaurant has kept the top notch quality of their food the same for over 40 years. Apparently you can get a whole lobster for £30, so will be trying that next. Also tried the mussels, which are a generous portion of 40+ mussels for a starter and the white wine, garlic sauce was perfection. The linguini was hearty and had a kick to it, but would recommend another recommended option from the server. It was our first time in Edinburgh and we wanted to try the Scottish seafood. We tried it last month and it was a really delicious meal. We started with the cold seafood platter, and also had an order of the mussels in white wine sauce to share for the 4 of us. The mussels were a hit, they were generous with the garlic. I ended up ordering the half lobster and the scallops (2) which also came with fries. The lobster was sweet and rich and the scallops were served in their shell. The dessert was also phenomenal- we had the strawberry parfait and the chocolate flourless cake, which came with cream or ice cream or both. They were both yummy in their own ways. This meal (one of the last on our trip, sadly) was one best we had, albeit super rich. But it was worth it. The ambiance is on the higher end, but still dressy casual, I think. I took a turn down the small quaint street, and stumbled on to coffee roasters. Sat and spoke to the owners for a long time, who recommended Thistle bar across the alley. Went there and spoke to those owners for a while, who recommended Fishers. All three of those places are FANTASTIC! The food here is wonderful! We were staying at the Intercontinental and Fishers is a short walk. We only intended to eat one dinner there but we went back again. I didn't take my phone the first dinner but we had the tuna tartare, langoustine, scallops, and sticky toffee. And the bread basket which is important later. Regarding the bread basket, there are two types, white and whole-wheat and the bread is very good. I was not super impressed with the tapenade which was strong on anchovy (I like) but did not seem to have any olive oil. The langoustine and scallops are superb. They are broiled with a garlic butter. That is why you need to order the bread to sop up that butter. The arugula salad and chips were fine...nothing special. It is the proteins that are the star. The sticky toffee pudding is great. Fishers is more on the light side but in a good way. Most STP that I have had are quite dense. On the second dinner (photographed) we tried the calamari. It was fine but not up to the other seafood. We repeated the scallops that were superb. We tried the fish and chips. We like the ones at Harrods in London better. These were fine but may have been underseasoned. The service was excellent. As you can see, not all the dishes are the best I have ever had. Just returned from a late night dinner at Fishers - hands down the best meal we have enjoyed in all of the U.K. For starters we enjoyed the fish soup and the cod - both delicious. But the mains stole the show. The scallops were fresh and delicious, the steak was cooked to perfection- and can we please talk about the lobster? How can something so rich, buttery and delicate come out of the water? The garlic butter sauce was from heaven. Drinks were good and the sticky toffee pudding would make a grown man cry. Fishers in the City has been a longtime favourite of ours, we've enjoyed dozens of meals here over the years and when ever we come to Edinburgh we make a point of dining here. Sadly things have changed to the point of not recognising this once brilliant restaurant. The welcome was pretty rushed, I didn't mind that as it's a busy place and hospitality is having a very hard time with staffing. Shown to our table and given menus, selections looked good but then it started to go down hill rapid. Our waitress was over in seconds, asked if we wanted water and headed off to get the bottle of still water we ordered, no offer of a cocktail or pre dinner drink. Order was taken as soon as she got back with the water, my wife ordered the Fishers soup of Salmon & Smoked Haddock, I ordered the squid and we both chose the halibut as main course. Side plates were removed then which was odd, we'd expected the normally good homemade bread but no, no bread ever came. The starters arrived and we just looked at them, they were tiny, half of what we would normally have received and bland looking on the plate. The soup was good but the squid was over cooked and rubbery as if it had been cooked twice. No sooner was the starter cleared than the main course arrived. The halibut was beautiful but the mushrooms were soggy, potatoes cold and the sauce like water. We ordered a cheese selection and crème brûlée for dessert, the brûlée was over cooked and had a thick layer of sugar on top making it near impossible to enjoy, the cheese from I J Mellis was fantastic though. We ordered two coffees, they never appeared sadly. Bill was requested, paid and we were out. One hour 5 minutes for a 3 course dinner. Sadly, I doubt we will return, with a degree of sympathy for covid and staffing issues unfortunately this was a great letdown read more

We loved the seafood platter at Fishers on our last visit to Edinburgh a few years ago so we looked forward to eating there again. The food was good on two recent visits, but the service was almost comical it was so terrible . The first evening, we waited 45 minutes between our starter and our main course, and in the interim received no acknowledgement from the server as she whisked past us to serve the tables around us. We chalked this up to being a busy night in a popular restaurant that was perhaps short staffed. The food was delicious and we enjoyed ourselves despite the wait. A week later we dined there again because we were craving their mussels and their sticky toffee pudding. We visited in the early afternoon at a time when there were only 2 or 3 other occupied tables in the restaurant. The wine we ordered came right away, but not the whiskey. We waited. A table near us that had ordered after we did, received its food promptly, but we continued to wait for ours for another 15 minutes. The server was nowhere to be found. Our first course eventually came, and we politely reminded the server about the whiskey order. Again, the whiskey failed to appear. No apology or explanation from the server. The main course arrived, still no whiskey. After requesting it a third time, it was finally delivered. After the meal, we had another long wait before we could order dessert, and we were only able to do that by flagging down the server as she hurried past us to wait on another table. She very impatiently took our order as if it were a great inconvenience. After dessert, a different server returned with the check. As we were leaving, our server pointedly ignored us as we passed by her on our way out, looking up only after we told her "Thanks" and responding with a half-hearted thanks herself. Ugh. read more

If charming people working at a restaurant matters then this has 5 stars. It does so this has 5 stars. The food is good, the fish is moist, fresh and not overlooked. The scallops were good, but a bit too much garlic in the shells so I had to take them out of the shells. The dessert was also great, the chocolate cake fresh and rich with perfect other ingredients to balance and make it interesting. The creme brulee was almost an example in how to do them. This place is the upper end of prices, but earns it's prices properly. The decor is smart, warm and the people there are sophisticated. For a while I did feel like one of the them and us elite, although of course that for me is not the point! To go for good fresh food in a smart restaurant this is a good choice. read more

I absolutely have to give Fishers a resounding five stars, as after trying almost everything they have on the menu over the last few years, I am now happy to say I've gathered enough food sampling evidence to conclude that this place is always awesome. Consistently amazing food is the the aim of every restaurant I would imagine, and Fishers has certainly succeeded in attaining this. Not once have I ever come in here and found something to be tasteless, bland, or anything less than delicious. Neither has my food ever arrived late, plus the staff are always charming and accommodating. The menu changes quite regularly at Fishers, but my personal recommendations from the regular menu fixtures would be the mussels, with whatever yummy sauce of the day is on offer, the fish cakes and the eternally fantastic scallops. And if you're not an avid seafood enthusiast, no stress required, there are always meat and veggie options to be had from the menu. Very reasonably priced for the generous portions and quality of food, so if you are arranging any kind of dinner that just has to be good, or else there'll be dubious consequences (first dinner with potential inlaws, clients you need to make a deal with, someone you want to manipulate into loving you through feeding them, you get the picture), then this is your place, I'm telling you. read more

Best Meal Of My Life!!! Seriously, I'm not even exaggerating. I had this massive seafood platter for $40....I was literally in heaven!! The plate came towering with seafood, everything a seafood lover could ever dream of. I literally licked the plate dry. On top of a great meal, the restaurant itself is super adorable; Very cozy and personably. I really enjoy sitting at an old wooden table on the top level of the split-nautical fishy themed restaurant looking out over quiet Thistle Street. When I left an old job they bought me, (amongst other things such as bad joke toilet paper and lots of packets of space raiders) a voucher to eat here - I was chuffed, not only because I never pass off a free meal and also having eaten here before, it certainly fills my fishy soft spot (sounds a bit rank-dirty eh?!) Fresh, well cooked fish isn't the only thing you can get on the venue but it would be completely pointless to chose this if you weren't into things from the wet. My friend brought me here for lunch on my birthday, and as the world's biggest seafood junkie I was more than a little bit excited. As soon as you walk in, you see why everyone raves about how beautiful it is; I love the huge L-shaped aquarium that lines almost two entire walls of the raised area where we sat. One thing I did think was cheeky though, was that despite my friend having phoned ahead to reserve a table for their Table D'Hote lunch menu, the waiter only gave us the Á La Carte one. Which would have been fine, except that two courses from the set menu cost less than one single main course from the Á La Carte. When we asked another waitress she brought us the set menu straightaway, but it annoyed me the way they were just trying to sneak as much money out of us as possible. Rant over, the food was incredible. I honestly can't remember what my friend had, as I was so engrossed in my own food, it was that good! My starter of mackerel with a pine nut and green bean salad was really well-presented, and the drizzle of mint pesto around the edge added that extra little touch. But it was my main course that really trumped it: a huge fillet of seared coley sitting on a bed of greens and swimming in a shrimp and mussel bisque, and I'm actually getting hungry just writing about it. If they did takeaway I'm fairly sure I'd have my phone in my hand right now... The fact that they do at least half a dozen different wines by the glass was also a definite plus point, and they were really reasonably priced considering the quality. I went here based on the reviews and was really excited to try Scottish seafood since the produce is so wonderful. Starting with the good - the service was really friendly and efficient. The waitress informed us beforehand of what was not available (was easter weekend) so understandably certain things were sold out. I hate it when I make my mind up about what I'm going to order to only be told that the item is not available. We ordered the following: 6 oysters Pan fried scallops Posh fish and chips (cod and jumbo shrimp) 8 langoustines Oysters. - very good and fresh. Pan fried scallops - Good, but would have liked to have tried the hand dived ones which were sold out. Fish and chips - average, no much flavour in the batter Langoustines - a real let down. It seemed like they may have dig them out of the freezer from a couple of years back and cooked them up because they were dreadful. Soft powdery flesh. I should have sent them back, but I was hoping I would get one decent langoustine having ordered 8 of them. All in all, disappointed. read more

We came to this place on a recommendation for seafood and as I am a seafood person I was pretty excited to visit this place. We went in for an early dinner at around 6 pm and ordered drinks, the drinks were fantastic and they have an amazing range so you can order drinks starting from 4£. I ordered a port as I love ports and found it on the menu ( which was super random about me) and my partner went for a glass of whiskey. We ordered Kashmiri curry with prawns and coley with steamed rice and went crazy. It was so yummy and my Indian spirits were totally uplifted. I would highly recommend this place if you are in the old town. I adore Thistle Street, as it has some great places for dinner and/or drinks. Fishers didn't quite cut it, for me. It's a bit of a tourist trap, has an odd layout that really doesn't make best use of the space available, and the dishes didn't quite balance, for me. Overall, we said: "Fishers in the City serves pretty good dishes, with good local ingredients, but somehow doesn't quite hit the mark, for me. I enjoyed the soup, muchly, and the lemon sole was lovely, but a little clearer thought needs applied to the construction of the dishes, to ensure that the best is made from the star ingredients. The business is making its money from tourist trade, and more power to its elbow for that, so my quibbles are less relevant to how they shape their service than those of their international clientele. I think there's room for improvement, but that improvement needs to ensure that it capitalises upon their current broad appeal." read more

As I write this it occurred to me I do tend to always be giving restaurants high marks, then I realised it just i have great taste when it comes to booking places ;) So anyway I was going to give this place 4 stars but then started thinking...... well....what am I taking a star off for........the wine was great......the service was great.........the food was awesome....so really yeah its got to be 5 stars. As so what i had well this will come to no shock to many but I started off with a beautiful plate of oysters! Just stunning, fresh as can be and taste like the sea! (hold on the rhymes career in advertising here I come). For main I had the bengali fish curry, now i wont for a second try and say whether or not it was authetntic but damn was it tasty. It was that kind of spicy there you mouth is kind of burnign but you dont care cause all of the falvours are just tremendous. If i had to criticise I would say would be nice to have some flatbread with it. Desert was rhubarb trifle, really nice young rhubarb that had a beautiful biiter/sweet flavour.
