I tried all the teachers at this place and found one I liked, but then she was gone and I just wasn't into the rest of the teachers enough to hang out. These people seem pretty big into the spirituality aspect of yoga, which might be a positive for you, but it's off-putting to me. I found this place to be somewhat pretentious, lots of iconography and tchotchkes around, and the classes aren't all that cheap. Oh, and another thing about yoga: don't think you "get what you pay for." It doesn't work like that in yoga. You can get a really awesome top notch class for $10, or you can pay $25 for a smug douche to boss you around, lecture to you, or read from Eat, Pray, Love.* Really, truly, shop around. The best yoga class you can find may just be offered by your town's recreation program for $10 a class. Soma center seems decidedly feminist, which is cool, but I'm not sure I'm down with their view of femininity. Not that there is anything wrong with it, I just always have some difficulty with the whole "goddess" schtick. What else can I tell you? Well, it's on the second floor, above a barber shop. You change in the hall outside the studio room. There is a counter in the studio where you conduct the business of paying for classes, etc. There is a bathroom but it's at the end of the studio, by where the instructor usually sets herself up, so if you have to get up to use it, you're kinda bothering a lot of people. Everyone is very nice. They have a teacher training program, which they seem to be pushing, and if you've been around a while, you are probably skeptical of places with teacher training programs. This might sound like a negative review, but it isn't. I would totally go back to this place, for the right teacher. *does not happen at Soma Center, at least not while I was there

If you want to learn Ashtanga, this is a great place to learn…read more I was first introduced to Yoga in 2005. I practiced vinyasa yoga at Satsang Yoga Studio in Westfield and really enjoyed going there. I stopped practicing yoga for a few years and exercised at the gym and at home. Unfortunately it was hard to stay motivated at home and the gym became expensive and uninviting for me. (Not a big fan of workout machines and people who grunt/slam weights down.) I always had a love for yoga and after a recommendation from my cousin, I signed myself up for the Intro. series in September of 2014. Ashtanga comprises of a series of poses done in order linked together by breath. Classes here are "Mysore Style", you do your practice at your own pace while a teacher assists you if necessary. I learned a lot from the Intro. series and was eager to begin learning more of the Primary series. When I first started, I was kind of nervous about practicing on my own; I'd always followed the instruction of a teacher! But after several weeks, I gained more confidence and got used to self practice. Just like with anything, it takes time, patience, and a lot of breathing to progress in your practice. Sometimes I forget a pose (oops!) especially if my mind is on wandering mode, but I just try to focus and get it right next time. I am very happy with my yoga practice and am thankful for Alissa and Sonya for being great teachers.

Nice straight forward ashtanga yoga place in a neighborhood in highland park…read more We escaped the big city and stopped here for a morning Mysore class. It was good there were only 8 people I think so Alissa , the teacher had time to assist everybody. I like hands on assist and in certain poses she asked me if I would like to be assisted, that's great too, I don't want anybody to grab and twist just out of the blue. Before our drop in, that was 17$ ( good price), she asked aswell if we had any injuries. The studio is one room and they keep the temperature nice. It was kind of odd that a few people started doing 2 nd series that didn't seem to have primary completed, but that's probably only because my teachers don't encourage that. I m for sure happy that we found this place and gladly return when I m in the area!

There were no free treadmills, so I got on a weird gliding machine to get my cardio in. Weights were completely gone from the racks so I ended up just leaving after 20 minutes. I can't believe that a university that is in the Big 10 has a gym like this. So small and crowded without sufficient equipment and weights. Yikes, never going back again. The only thing that the cardio/weight room has going for it was a unique machine that looked like a treadmill. See the picture! I didn't get to use it, but it looked cool.

The rock wall offers climbers to rope climb as well as boulder. They don't have lockers in the rock climbing gym, but they have small cubicles, which is not bad! Sometimes I'm worried that people will take my stuff because that almost happened to be before at a different rock climbing center, but since this gym is so open, I guess it's safer. I'm been to the equipment/machinery/weights area of the gym, and it was okay. Since it was located in the basement, it was more humid and muggy, and the air circulation was kind of poor. But I do like the lockers on the side of the gym. There are separate locker rooms down the hall, but it's convenient to just store your bag in the lockers here. Also, the entire gym has a weird and complex layout with unclear signs, so when I first came here I was lost and couldn't find the places I wanted to go until I went around the gym a few times.
