Today I went to fitzbillies to buy Chelsea buns for my son for his birthday, the lady who served me was very friendly and helpful. My reason for the one star is the Chelsea buns themselves, I have been buying these buns for over 50 years and I can honestly say they were the worst ones I have ever had, they were so dry and not very tasty! The Fitzbillies Chelsea buns are renowned for being very gooey and their very own unique flavour and the price you pay is because they are unique to Fitzbillies Cambridge! Please please make them how they used to be and not like any other dry Chelsea bun! read more

I LOVE Fitzbillies. I have been twice for lunch now. Menu changes on the chalk boards on the black wall. Light and airy layout. The first time I had the bacon/egg pie with green salad - I wish the bacon on the pie had been saltier but the texture was perfect. The green salad was also just a simple vinaigrette, but so well done. I had potted rabbit with toast and pickles today - I had no idea what to expect but essentially it was a spread or salad of pulled rabbit, herbs, vegetables that you put on great home made toast. We had to try the Chelsea bun! Hubby and I split a bun, and each ordered tea. The Earl Grey was so fragrant! The women next to us were enjoying the afternoon tea, which looked good. Fitzbillies has such an enticing shop window and it doesn't disappoint once you get inside. It sells gorgeous buns, cakes that can be decorated with Happy Birthday and personalised. My favourites are the vanilla slices, which just ooze with cream. The pastries and buns are not cheap but are correctly priced for their quality. If you have any children at college in Cambridge,who you want to treat, you can order a cake and they will deliver it for you. read more

A place to go if you want to treat someone special - or even yourself! The millefoille is divine, the éclairs scrumptious and the cakes a real treat. I bought my mother a sponge cake from here, iced in the shape of a chicken. Not only was she ecstatic about receiving a chicken-shaped cake (which is not something you see often) but the cake was the best we have ever tried. The sponge was light and buttery, the layers of icing perfectly sweet and the top icing wonderful. It was pretty pricy - at £25 for a cake. However, it was worth it. And as it was a 3-layered cake it could be shared among many. Fitzbillies is a patisserie, not a bakery, and the effort put into the making of their cakes and treats is reflected in their quality. You pay a little more than you might elsewhere, but it is worth it as the products taste a hundred times better than anywhere else. You can't go to Cambridge and not go to Fitzbillies! read more

Was in Cambridge for work, and decided to eat here for one of my weekend lunches. I had the afternoon tea, and ordered a Chelsea bun on the side. I thought the Chelsea bun was a lot like a cinnabon in the US, heh. Overall, everything was really tasty, and service was good. The restaurant is very inviting from the outside and is set in a great location with lovely cobbled streets and beautiful buildings to gaze at over your meal. The food is also of a high standard, and usually there is a great specials selection of fresh food, especially fish dishes. Its also a top vegetarian location. Fitzbillies It sounds like something Stephen Fry would dream up, a new quiz show perhaps or a type of eccentric trousers. In fact it is a bakery, frequented by Mr Fry and countless other Cambridge alumni during their spell at the establishment. The shop window could be stared at for hours and its contents look the sort to be eaten slowly and without interruption. Fitzbillies has been commended for its Chelsea buns, fruitcakes and sumptuous chocolates, the recipes of which are much guarded secrets. There have only been three owners since its coming into being in the 1920's, so you can be assured of quality and exclusivity. Hampers can be bought for Valentines day and other occasions, and there's even a restaurant next door. Perfection. read more

Fitzbillies has the best buns, scones, and cakes in all of Cambridge. The hot drinks are great as well. Service is friendly and relatively fast - a definite must if you are visiting Cambridge, and if you live here I highly suggest a weekly visit for health and happiness. Chelsea bun was delicious--sticky cinnamon and raisins. My friend tried the Chelsea bun ice cream, which was also solid. The location itself is small, so if you can't find a space to sit, I would suggest taking your buns and eating them by the river. read more

This location is pretty tight inside and felt really crowded when we stopped in. I got a cold chicken and bacon sandwich (it was okay) and the kids got toasties (grilled cheeses, very tasty). We also shared a Chelsea bun which was good but nothing special IMO. My only issue is the people behind the counter seemed snobby and not so friendly but maybe I'm being paranoid since I'm American and I want everyone to like me. read more

Having read the review that Fitzbillies' hot chocolate is a real gem, I visited the place craving a cup of rich and creamy soul-warmer. Well, to my disappointment, I was served a small portion of a watery beverage which must have contained more sugar than cocoa. However, the service was nice and the Wi-Fi strong, so the whole experience wasn't a total disaster. read more

Cakes, buns, sponges, roly-poly and most sweet pastries can be found in this lovely shop located in the city centre among the colleges. Established around 1922, it is an old bakery with plenty of experience, but they also have contemporary stuff and designs. Your eyes will almost pop out of their socket when you look through the shop window, that is just the tip of iceberg compared to when you actually taste one of the pastries. The famous pastry with students who visit is the Chelsea Bun, thick and slightly spicy. It is all you will ever wish for in a bun, just slightly better. The tuckbox scheme was introduced a couple of years back, it is basically a system where you can register if you are a student with £3 and get a lifetime membership, this will get you discounts and offers on a range of products. The best deal is the one where you give a friend a year's supply of Chelsea bun; basically, they will deliver four buns every month for a year. I bet that will be so cool, just make sure that your friend is not watching their weight. This is a nice place to be naughty with the sweet stuff occasionally or just have a slice of cake with your tea. They have wide selection of cakes for every occssions birthday, weddings and this can be delivered on request. Verdict: Delightful read more

Unfortunately Fitzbillies is one of the few bakers in town and really shouldn't be given its high regard. We have had a number of cakes from here via various people and the stanadr is quite low. The Chelsea buns are very nice, but the choclate fudge cake ahas the meanest scrap of fudge over ht top of the cake and really isn't that good to look at. Tastes okay, but you do want the full package. read more

Fitzbillies is something of a Cambridge institution as a bakery and everybody should try their cinnamon buns and their superb scones at least once. Although the restaurant serves a decent lunch time and the cream tea for two is with 6 pounds decently priced it is overall not too cheap. Service can be really bad and slow due to being understaffed and overworked. A little more heating in the winter would not hurt and inexplicably the place lacks any sense of cosines that could not have been too hard to achieve. Also, the scene of Trumpington Road on a weekend makes you sometimes feel like being in a fish bowl when tourists flood by. If you do not want to miss their unbelievable scones and the weather is clement, it is a good idea to go to their bakery next door. Buy a scone, cornish clotted cream, a little marmelade pot, and ask for a plastic knife. It's 1,50 and a heavenly treat. read more

Located next to the famous Fitzbillies cake shop and run by the same owners, a short walk from the city centre, this is a very popular tea room, lunch and dinner spot in town. I used to work as a waitress there. The art deco inspired interior decor creates a very cosy atmosphere, which adapts well to the different times of day, and during the summer there's air conditioning. Fitzbillies serves hot drinks (try the Valrhona hot chocolate!) and cakes (try the chelsea buns or cream tea with scones) from the patisserie next door during the day, light and more substantial dishes for lunch, as well as a pre-theater and a full dinner menu. There is a small but nice selection of wines and interesting soft drinks. The menus change regularly and based on mostly locally sourced ingredients. All dishes are cooked from scratch by one or two chefs in a minuscule kitchen, which is why service can be rather slow at busy times despite the best efforts of the waiting staff, so patience may be required on a weekend evening or Sunday afternoon! It is also by no means a cheap option, but considering the quality of the food it is still reasonable value. Fitzbillies has been on this site in Cambridge since 1922 which must tell you something. It's utterly charming and very handy for visitors to the Fitwilliam Museum opposite. Rumour has it that Stephen Hawkins comes in to the bakery next door to get a much feted Chelsea bun which have become a Cambridge institution. I can't think of a better place to buy cakes in town and although they're not cheap they are lovely. read more

I recently discovered that a loaf of bread made by Fitzbillies is cheaper than a similar loaf at the supermarkets, so why not buy something at a lower price and at the same time support local businesses? This is a lovely bakers which specialises in British treats such as the chelsea bun, but they also have beautiful wedding cakes in the window to showcase their other talents. However, I wouldn't say it is a traditional British bakery - it looks a little bit more classy and no automatic bread-slicer in sight! So if you want to treat yourself, why not drop in? They have a restaurant next door, too. read more

5 stars for the environment and service. Otherwise, the Chelsea bun is very ordinary. Maybe it's because I've had tons of different types of cinnamon rolls in the US where I live. The rolls here are quite pricy in comparison and are much harder in consistency. And there is way too much syrup. read more

I always think of Fitzbillies fondly, but I'm not really sure why. It's expensive (you can easily blow a tenner on tea and cake for 2), and not really out of the ordinary. Yes, you can spend a fortune on the posh hot chocolate, but why? Indigo, down the road, is cheaper, tastier and more comfortable. Fitzbillies is a little dreary, with seats that aren't that comfortable, views out on to Silver Street which aren't that inspiring, service that is slow enough you've probably forgotten what you ordered anyway, and to cap it off, cold enough that I've had to sit there with my coat on. The truth is it was a Cambridge legend before it burnt down in 1998/9, and it hasn't really been the same since re-opening. A pity. read more
