If you're looking for a proper American burger joint in Edinburgh, then Five Guys will be the ideal restaurant for you. As part of the busy Fort Kinnaird leisure complex, it is always really crowded and the staff always look really frazzled trying to keep up with the extreme flow of orders coming through. However, once you do get your order, it will be well worth the wait. The burgers are really juicy and meaty and are always really satisfying to bite into. The fries are very crispy and they pre-salt them so avoid putting salt on them. There are also 2 drinks machines in the corner which have the most diverse roster of drinks I've ever seen. My personal favourite is the raspberry fanta. It is sweet but with a refreshing tartness to it. The atmosphere is a bit noisy with the staff bingo calling order numbers. The music is also very noisy as well. Apart from this, it offers a great all out American experience.

Best you can do for the burger/fries combo in Edinburgh I think. Not sure what that says about the burger scene here in the capital city...

Hot, tasty, quick and friendly service and the music dialled back a bit from the usual Five Guys ear-splitting volume!

As an American I also appreciate the unlimited drink refills too! As for the menu, I'd recommend the boneless thighs over and above all the rest. Spiced just the way you want they are flavorful, moist and easy to clean-up after. Try the half chicken once and you'll know what that can be important! As for sides the peri-peri salted chips are wonderful and the corn on the cob is not too bad.

The chicken was just right, not too spicy and not too under-spiced. For sides we got corn on the cob and chips both of which were pretty good. I had a bottomless coke to drink and it tasted good even though the ice may have watered it down a bit. Also the ice came out in little pieces, not in nice big cubes. The African style decor was very stylish and modern, and the music that was playing wasn't really too loud. (I'm looking at you Five Guys and TGI Friday's.) Our waitress was nice and we had great service from when we entered. As soon as we walked through the door, we were greeted immediately and shown to a comfy and cosy booth. I have had a good experience at Nandos and I will be back soon for some more chicken!

These pies are a great light lunch or snack when consumed by themselves. Or one can get a variety of them and make it a meal. The pies are made fresh daily and displayed in the glass case at the counter along with other British style fried foods such as Tattie Dogs, Sausage Rolls, etc. There are a variety of the infamous pies offered. We tried a Steak and Ale pie and an Original Scotch Pie with brown sauce packet for the pour over. I enjoyed mine (Scotch Pie) and could've eaten a couple more God willing. Along with an Irn Bru, this was a satisfying and affodable meal. Definitely give this place a try when in the area.

They make perfect snack sized pastries that let you try a variety without getting too full. Compared to other local pasty shops their baked pastries use better ingredients and are better cooked. I love how flaky and golden colored the pasties were. You'll find a variety of traditional pasties here as well as some unique creations worth checking out. My kids loved the hasbrowns wrapped around a sausage so much we ordered an extra one even though they said they weren't hungry before. This is located in a busy area and there are a small amount of seats inside against the window and a small table next to the drinks. There isn't any seating or place to sit outside so I wouldn't plan on eating here.

One evening in Berkeley, California, out to dinner with some friends at a Korean restaurant, I…read moreshared that I was heading to Scotland in July of 2019 and asked if anybody had been and had any recommendations for places to go. Probing why I was going a little, they got out of me I am of the Gordon Clan of Aberdeenshire, a Scotland of Old clan. One of my friends exclaimed, "Gordon!" He paused, looked me directly in the eyes and said, "You know we're rivals right?!" He is Nate James Lindsey. A member of the Lindsey Clan, one of the Gordon Clan's rival clans in Scotland of Old. Once we addressed our rival ancestries, he recommended to me The Baked Potato Shop in Edinburgh, the city I was flying into/out of for my first trip not only to Scotland, but to Europe as well. Well, I might as well go I thought, how bad can a rival clan recommendation be. The night I arrived in Edinburgh, 5 July 2019, I entered The Baked Potato Shop and was greeted by a friendly worker. After looking over the menu, I went with a baked potato loaded with vegan chilli and vegan Macsween haggis. After placing my order, paying, and getting the baked potato I thought the only thing missing from my first ever evening in Scotland was bagpipe music. No sooner had I thought that than I heard the sounds of bagpipes wafting across the cobbled lane out front of the Shop. Across the cobbled lane I went, lured by the wail of the bagpipes. After listening for a bit and providing a tip I returned to the guest house I was staying the night at. The food was delicious and filled my travel-tired belly. The haggis was the first I had of any kind, vegan or non-vegan, and it was an immediate favorite. Offset from my departure time zone by 8 hours, I went to sleep soon after eating. I woke up early the next morning ready to go. Turns out the baked potato and toppings cured my jet lag in less than 24 hours, quite remarkable. What a way to end my first day in Scotland, a recommendation from a member of a rival Scotland of Old clan yields tasty food. I will however note that I am also of Irish descent, so I am still not sure what to make of the recommendation in light of the Irish Potato Famine... Ahhh, Scotland of Old lives on.

When it comes to the takeaway vote, I always support the Indian food option. Back in the day, I used to work at an Indian restaurant, which is where my real education on what constitutes good Indian food came from. The chefs tested out an elaborate range of flavours on me, building my spice tolerance up week by week, and sealing my appreciation for Indian cuisine, which is why the food at Jaipur of India is always such a delight to sample.
