I can't help to love this place and glad they are still in business, I'll always remember this place fondly because we came to eat here immediately after getting married in Edinburgh 10 years ago. They make perfect snack sized pastries that let you try a variety without getting too full. Compared to other local pasty shops their baked pastries use better ingredients and are better cooked. I love how flaky and golden colored the pasties were. You'll find a variety of traditional pasties here as well as some unique creations worth checking out. My kids loved the hasbrowns wrapped around a sausage so much we ordered an extra one even though they said they weren't hungry before. This is located in a busy area and there are a small amount of seats inside against the window and a small table next to the drinks. There isn't any seating or place to sit outside so I wouldn't plan on eating here.
This is one awesome place to get had pies! I think is a good place to go and try them if you have never experienced them. The Piemaker has soooooo many different pies to choose from. In the US we think of pie as a dessert but here it's both savory and sweet. Yes US has Pot pie but this is a whole other level of pie. The service is great and helpful and the place is relaxed no rush. It's clean and quiet. Look for £20 we got two hand pies one steak one chicken, a mac and cheese to split, and two fruit pies all had held and delicious. So this place is in Edinburgh Scotland at city center on the Royal Mile. Drop in and enjoy!
We got at least two items from this shop every day of our trip (that's 4 days in a row). It's that good. And every time, the pies were super fresh, hot, flaky, and delicious. And it didn't matter the time of day, even in the late afternoon/evening. Not only did we try many different types of savory pies, we also tried the cookies/bars, and they were just as phenomenal. Honestly, this place deserves 10 stars. And extra ones for the staff, who were so friendly and helpful. I would come back to Edinburgh just to visit this shop!
How fun was this? And very economical meal or snack spot. We also found it a harmless way to try the "dreaded" haggis, which was actually great encased in a puff pastry pie. Sausage roll, spectacular. Steak and ale pie? The best gravy I have ever had anywhere with large chunks of tender roasted quality beef. Dinner less than ten pounds sterling for two people and right across the street from our great IBIS hotel. Center of Old Town. But Piemaker was made most special with the store employee that night who spent time with us explaining the ingredients and boasting about her home town, as well as pointing out stops to make during our tour. Kudos to her. So fun!
After a few hours of exploring Edinburgh, I was ready to head back to the hotel. I noticed the shop as I was walking yo the bus stop. It's a small shop and easy to miss if you're not paying attention. They have stools set up for those who wish to dine in and you can people watch while you eat. It's pretty quiet so you can enjoy your meal with minimal noise and distractions. The two pies I got were both delicious though I will say I did enjoy the Cornish more.The drink I got was also great, a ginger beer that wasn't too sweet and perfect accompaniment for the pies. I didn't see any dessert kind of pies which would have been lovely but otherwise, great service and a great meal.
Okay, this place rules. If I lived near here I'd go all the time. Good selection of pies, served hot (if applicable), for takeaway or dining in at their small amount of seating. Are you going to be blown away by flavor or novelty? No. But the pies are a decent size, have flaky crust, and the price is right. You can even get some espresso while you're in. Awesome.
Yes. It's actually worth the hype. I don't give in, and when I try a place that's got a big hype-cycle, I'm super critical. All that said, I'd come back here again twice on Sundays if I could. My wife had the traditional pasty. The crust was firm, not in a bad way, it in a way that held the near molten, delicious inner working in place. The firm crust gave way with crisp crunch, and then the piping hot stewed meat and made its way to the stage. She loved it, as I loved the wee (she said big) bite I took. For myself, I canna say no to haggis. So the haggis pie it was. I could eat a dozen of these a day. Same physics defying pie crust, this time topped with mashed tatties (finished ala crème brûlée style), while housing a haggis patty inside. Such a great variety of delicious pastries, both savory and sweet-- and all are reasonably priced. I got the potato roll and a £1 chocolate donut. Both were great, but I'll definitely be back for another donut... You can't beat that price.
Of course you can get some good ol' pastries from Gregg's (which is great as well), but The Piemaker has a homemade feel from not becoming a chain. If you are going to have some baked good, make a point to come here for a nice treat! The Piemaker offers over 30 different meat, veggie, and sweet fillings for a quick bite. It was a bit difficult to choose just one item, so I went ahead and ordered the Haggis Pie (£2.20), Traditional Pastry (£2.20), and Fiery Jalepeno Cheesy Dog (£1.90). The waiter was super friendly as well offering me a plate and napkins to dine-in after wrapping all my baked goods for me. I was too eager to wait until I got home, so went ahead and took a seat facing the window. First of all, the haggis pie was yummy and tasty with a nice crust filled with a savory layer of haggis and tatties. If you come to Scotland, these traditional mini pies are a staple, especially with haggis. As for the traditional pastry, it was rather okay. There was a lot of pastry and the mixture of mashed veggies and meat did get a bit overwhelming. My favorite was actually the cheesy dog, which was essentially a spicy cheese filled pastry. It did break apart too easily, so be careful but damn is it delicious! It may not be the most traditional item, but I'd get this item again in a heartbeat. This is the perfect place to taste a bit of Scotland while on a budget that will fill you up! As you're wandering along South Bridge, this will make a great snack or treat to save for later.

Went there twice back in 2019. Food was excellent. Everything we tried was great. Had a strange and rather uncomfortable interaction with a worker (or perhaps he was the owner I don't know) over how to pronounce the word Pasty (Past-tee vs Paste-Tee) The worker was condescending enough he had to tell me that a Paste-tee is a nipple cover (this was weird) and that I should learn to speak proper English. I am Asian American. I am also tri-lingual along with a few college degrees. We were speaking English. I guess my Asian face was demanding a free English lesson inside a pie shop. My wife, who is Caucasian, didn't get the same lecture even though she said the same thing. I wonder why. Learn to respect your customers. If I did not know how to pronounce some words the way you do, try to be polite. I sure as heck was not trying to offend anyone.

What can I say. Our first pies and they were outstanding. We tried a few different ones and my favorite was the haggis of all things. The gentleman behind the counter was patient while we decided what we wanted. Food is served up quickly. Space inside is small so we got it to go and sat in a curve and ate it which was awesome. read more
We met the owner of The Piemaker while trying this renowned quick bite restaurant in Edinburgh. He is the nicest guy and his place is extremely popular. These pies are a great light lunch or snack when consumed by themselves. Or one can get a variety of them and make it a meal. The pies are made fresh daily and displayed in the glass case at the counter along with other British style fried foods such as Tattie Dogs, Sausage Rolls, etc. There are a variety of the infamous pies offered. We tried a Steak and Ale pie and an Original Scotch Pie with brown sauce packet for the pour over. I enjoyed mine (Scotch Pie) and could've eaten a couple more God willing. Along with an Irn Bru, this was a satisfying and affodable meal. Definitely give this place a try when in the area. read more

I love me some pies. I think one of my favourite foods in general is mini, savoury pies. I got the flaky haggis, the steak, and the mac and cheese! My favourite was the haggis, then mac and cheese, and last the steak. They were all so delicious though. Warm, tasty, and filling. You can pay by card but only over a certain amount. Montreal equivalent: Ta Pies! read more
Dumb tourist tip: If you're new to Edinburgh and feel that you're standing exactly where that blue dot tells you you're supposed to be, but see NOTHING around that looks right... find some stairs and head up. You're on Cowsgate Road, and at that moment you're standing directly below South Bridge, which is where you actually want to be. I'm just passing that tip along since "a friend" made that mistake! :) In my week in Edinburgh, I've been to The Piemaker twice. I went with the Scottish and macaroni pies the first time, and they were good - certainly worth the price. Went back for the Vintage Cottage pie and was absolutely blown away. I only have two days left in Edinburgh, but may have to make a third trip to this place. Doesn't hurt that each pie is generally £2 or less. And, the man who packed up my pies both times was quick and friendly. If I lived in Edinburgh, I'd be here at least once a week. Don't miss it! read more

LOVED my haggis pie and my Scottish steak pie. They had so many different ones, I was sad I wasn't more hungry! They keep them hot under a lamp, so they're ready to eat right when they hand it to you. I really wish I could go back. read more
