    Shop cat!

This shop is the greatest place for stationary lovers!!! The people who work there are able to wrap things up if you are giving them as gifts which is a great little perk! They have a great variety of funny stickers, amazing gel pens, and notebooks that you can get personalized!!! Everything is a little more expensive than what you'd get online BUT it is supporting a small woman owned business and that is priceless! AND! There's a shop cat! Stop here for your stationary and cat petting needs!

Super cute and welcoming stationery shop in the historic Benson neighborhood. This place is PACKED with pens, pens, pens and all kinds of writing accessories and fun items. In case you can't tell, I LOVE pens and all the things. It's well lit, clean, and comfortable; a pleasure to shop. There's such a variety here. There are pens that are a dollar or two. Or, if you are looking for a special pen, there are some lovely ones at higher price points. I did not buy the $30 mini fountain pen but I did hold it in my hand for a while before I placed it back on the shelf.

You don't see many stationary stores any more, but Five Nine at 61st and Maple is a step back in time with an updated vibe. Single sheets of hand printed wrapping paper and unique journals are a magnet for those who are looking for a bit of nostalgia and a quality product. I enjoyed weaving through the store multiple times and picked up new purchases with each zig and zag. The store is pet friendly and an adorable dachshund kept me company during my visit. The store did not open until 1:00 on my Wednesday visit which I found a little unusual. I did find that the store has an online marketing presence with subscription services and gift packages.

    Awesome political yard signs!

They stock very cool Japanese pens that I can usually only find at niche stores in Portland.

Doesn't carry Crane stationary or Caran d'Ache pens. Also no fountain pens. Unacceptable!

You know what's better than being a kid in a candy store? Being an adult in a candy store! Because you have money . Had a nice conversation with staff, about candy. I like candy! I bought some chamoy gummy bears. Then I decided to check out the other side, which is bursting with color, too. Mainly things that used to be referred to as "tobacco accessories". And also socks, lots and lots of novelty socks, like a bigger selection than maybe I've ever seen. I don't know if there is a connection between these items. Anyway, I had already spent my money on gummy bears, so maybe I'll look into the accessories more next time.

I'm naturally suspicious that a proprietor has enlisted their friends to provide a more favorable review in the face of an honest assessment, albeit perhaps not at a star rating proprietor would like. I wanted to do an honest review to see if the business owner was looking to Yelp for free advertising or if reviewer Kim J. was having a bitchy day. Having now visited the business myself, Yelp-gineering has never been more prevalent. The candles themselves are neither as awesome as the "one-review wonders" would suggest, nor are they awful. The candles are a little pricey, but they are also made by the business. Normally, I wouldn't give this place 1 star, but I have to object to people who enlist their friends to boost their star rating artificially. Actually, I am going to now start a business called Ryan, and have all my friends give me 5 stars because I think I'm fantastic. Sounds lame? Because it is lame.

It's not very big compared to others I've been in, so I feel their supplies are a bit limited. I mostly do watercolor and their selection is definitely smaller than other places. They also only restock "When they get a chance". So they often have a lot of empty spots that they claim they've places orders for. I don't know, maybe it's true, but their answers are wishy washy at best and always leave me skeptical. Prices tend to be MUCH higher in store than online. They'll give you a bit of a run around about whether the item with shipping from online will be cheaper than buying in store then supposedly give you the cheaper price. Yeah.... calling BS on that for multiple reasons and thru multiple purposes. Staff is a bit hit or miss. There are a few folks there who are great and knowledgeable, but the rest? Eh. he rest literally know NOTHING about their products and really don't seem interested in knowing. Which baffles me a bit. And since they are very clearly not trained in basics (pencil hardness for instance), you have to take anything they say with a grain of salt. This is a place where if you now what you want or need, then you'll probably going to be ok and find something, but perhaps not a specific item. But if you are going for guidance, then you might be in trouble. Thankfully when I started my art journey a few years ago I was close to a Jerry's Artarama and their staff was always on point. I learned a LOT from them.
