While small, this liquor store is packed to the brim with all sorts of tasty finds. I mostly wanted to find some local meads, and wasn't disappointed with their small but hearty selection. I got some flavors from both Etowah and The Viking Alchemist (both GA small businesses) to bring home. The small isles make it a bit difficult to navigate, but it's all good. I recommend not getting there during rush hour like we did because not only were the streets around this plaza nutty, so was the small parking lot where this establishment resides. Five Points Bottle Shop has always gone above and beyond to make my day. They are consistently the most reliable suppliers of hard to find beer and liquor, and are willing to make sure you get what you need, even when you can't make it by for another few hours. As a huge fan of everything Game of Thrones, I was very excited about Ommegang's limited release of their GoT inspired Take The Black Stout. But having to work all day on a Saturday, and during a Georgia Bulldogs home game no less, I was worried that I would miss out and never get a chance to try this limited edition beer. I called in from work, and a nice dude named Mike took my name and number, and assured me that when I finally made it by after quitting time, there would be two bottles waiting for me. This may not seem like much to some folks, but as a lover of Game of Thrones and one who can appreciate a good craft beer, Mike's willingness to set a couple of bottles aside for me so I wouldn't miss out put me at ease and allowed me to enjoy my short drive there after work, without having to worry about whether or not I'd be going home with some delicious Take The Black Stout. On the outside, this place looks like a random, slightly shady college town liquor store. Someone on twitter recommended this place so I checked it out. On the inside, I can swear I heard the Hallelujah chorus. Rows upon rows of boutique, small batch liquors from all over the planet, refrigerators filled to the gills with craft beer. I seriously couldn't believe my eyes. I just picked up several bottles of wine from Gosford Wine so I didn't inspect that area as closely, but I picked up some apple brandy from Clear Creek in Oregon and Corsair Artisan vodka from TN, as well as craft brew. This place is absolutely fantastic, not just for the incredibly deep beer selection and knowledgable staff but for the thoughtful and interesting wine available from all regions and sub-regions of the world. It's an absolute must to stop by here if you're a wino or beer lover in the Athens. Don't let the modest exterior fool you. Their beer selection is about as good as it gets -- anywhere. I went in looking for some Gueuze or Flanders Red and thought I might find one if I got lucky. They had a huge selection of both varieties, including some stuff I've never heard of. It's the same story for other beer varieties: a beer geek's paradise. Then I struck up a conversation with the guy on the register, and it quickly became obvious that he knows his stuff. I'm pretty sure I could have asked for a recommendation on pretty much any type of beer they carry, and he would have turned me onto something good. Had a quick peek at their bourbon selection, and I wasn't disappointed. It's a safe bet they've got a great selection of other liquors and wines. Highly recommended. By the way, I'm mystified at complaints that some of the stuff they sell is pricey. All of the prices I saw were in line with the available supply and distribution costs. And sure, I'd like to see more West Coast craft labels, too, but there's only so much shelf space and so many distributors that get these small-batch beers. They may not be as large as their west side counterpart but this is my preferred shop. A huge selection of Athens brew (Terrapin / Creature Comforts) as well as Scotch. Friendly staff, reasonable prices, great location, and it's on the east side which means it's incredibly convenient. The parking lot and traffic situation leave a bit to be desired on busy days so I'd advise avoiding it like the plague on pre-game Fridays... meaning stock up on Thursday! They also sell single cans and bottles so you don't have to commit to a six-pack or case which is super helpful if you want to sample a variety of brews. read more

This is one of my favorite places to buy bottles and cans of beer. They got lots of the good stuff and lots of the harder to find stuff. It's a bit tough to choose from what they got because they just have so many of it. They got one of those machines that does instantly chill your beer as many of them are sitting on shelves and not in the fridge. Check out the beer section right by the cashier, it's got a lot of the new stuff and beers you don't typically find anywhere else. The parking isn't too bad here, even for Five Points, as I usually have a spot right by the door. If you're into beer, a lot of the employees do like to strike up conversations about good beer, which is always nice to have as it shows good service. My only gripe is that I get really bad cell service for some reason here. But no place is perfect so I'll take it. If you want some great beer to go, this is the place to get it. read more

This place is awesome, and certainly better than you'd expect in a moderately small town like Athens. However, it doesn't have "omfgz every beer in the world" as some say. My only negative of this place is that some West Coast beers just aren't here (not that it's a huge negative, or entirely unexpected, but just FYI). For example, no Deschutes beer. Secondly, outside of Terrapin, Sam Adams, Bell's, New Belgium, and Highland, they rarely have all the beers of a particular brewery. Again, not a huge negative or entirely unexpected-- they'd have to get a much bigger store. But they carry an IPA for just about every brewery, but comparatively fewer stouts and porters. They also have a huge selection of international beers, but many are prohibitively expensive. I just can't pay $6.99 for a 10 oz. bottle, so I will never try that Japanese beer with a cute little owl on the label :( I still love this place, just don't think it's perfect. But what place ever is? They have the best prices in town and by far the best selection. Staff is pretty knowledgeable and helpful, and the new growler place has better prices than the original growler place in Athens. And in the off chance that you would actually want liquor (heh), they have good prices on that, too. read more

Let me put it this way: If Five Points Bottle Shop doesn't have it, it doesn't exist, especially when it comes to craft beer. Great spot for local and other microbrew beers. I choose to build my own six pack which is a nice option but they have an amazing selection of bottles, cans, singles, packs, and even a growler shop. It doesn't get much better than Five Points. They have everything you could need. Local craft beer, national/international selections, macrobrews, mead. Liqour selection is extensive and they have items that are sometimes hard to find, like Brazilian rum. They have mixers, bitters and even cigars. They have a growler shop as well with a pretty good selection (maybe 20 or so choices). YES! I have found heaven! This place literally blew me away from the moment I stepped inside. Total score here. We pulled up and from the outside it's just another dingy, janky looking package store. It doesn't even look that big, but a step in reveals quite a good sized place with shelves stacked to the ceiling, full of delicious goodness. The first beer aisle is all Belgian, plenty of names I know and a few new ones, and I'm a beer connoisseur so it takes a lot to impress me. Prices all seemed within retail of Atlanta places, some a bit high, some average, some low, typical of beer since the amount of inventory bought is what the prices are based on. On the same aisle is the Scotch, my other vice, and they have quite a large and varied selection here too. Very impressive for such a smallish place. The next beer aisle got even better, including some beers not even available in Atlanta and a few very rare, limited beers that I haven't seen in Atlanta for a year or two. Hell yes! I grabbed a basket and went to town, racking up $114 quickly and easily, and I could have tripled it had I not been dragged out by my friends. Totally going back up here soon to stock back up on some of these hard to find, never before seen beers. Always take the time to help find the perfect pour and have never been disappointed with a tip or a pick. I do appreciate Five Point's beer selection, it is vast and varied. But sometimes I feel there are just too many different beers here, which makes it a bit more difficult than a smaller shop that has a smaller, yet curated, selection. The reason I give this place four stars, though, is that you have to be on your guard and make sure you are not purchasing very outdated stock. The first time I got burned was with a six year old Hibernation Ale from Great Divide. Those bottles tasted off and there was trub at the bottom. And today (which prompted me to write this review), I walked away unawares with a four year old "21" from Avery. You can make the argument that this beer should be okay that old, but it is a hopped ale which should probably be drunk fresher than four years. It has apparently not been brewed in over a year, but I can't complain, as it was still a good tasting brown ale. So come here for beer, but be sure to check dates, sometimes it matters. read more
