My husband sent his trim and tilt unit to them and we paid for delivery service there and back. It cost $1500 to have it rebuilt. When he got it back and reinstalled it it didn't work. He sent videos and pictures. They told him to send it back. We did at the cost of 53 dollars. After they received it they said it was his fault it failed. They said the moter was "loose". We live in SC. They have no idea if the motor is loose. They won't repair the tilt and trim and they won't send it back. They won't give my husband a number to call because they only record incoming calls. They are shady AF. DON'T DO BUSINESS WITH THESE PEOPLE! They say they warranty their work. They don't. They just scam you out of your money and your parts. read more

The mechanics do very good work and I'm satisfied with the refurbishment. However, the good work was overshadowed by having to pay (without any forewarning) more than 2x the amount I was quoted, and having to deal with very dishonest and extremely inexperienced management/owner. I sent my unit in for refurbishment - they said it would be $415. They call up and say "unit is done, that'll be $850" on top of the $350 motor I had already purchased. No forewarning of the added costs at all. They said my boat sat in the water: not true, it's kept on a lift in season and in a boat motel off-season. They said they'd take the unit apart and send me back the pieces if I wanted (which seemed like extortion). After much BS, they took off $100 - meaning they knew they were wrong. So, if you don't mind being squeezed by the management I would trade off doing the work yourself or locally, or buying a new trim. In my case, I should have gone with a new one for a few hundred dollars more. Again, the company is badly managed and will lose customers - based on other comments I'm not the only one. read more

like it seems many others, i sent my unit from a mercury 150 for rebuild. initially quoted in the $700 dollar range with possible upcharges, i eventually received a call that the unit was ready at over double the original price. while they deducted $50 dollars because of my displeasure, they were firm on the number and i had no choice but to pay the freight or shop for another unit. they did not attempt to contact me regarding the exorbitant upcharges or mail me for approval prior to doing the "extra" work. after installation the unit failed to lower itself when raised to the tilt position. i was advised by adam to release some pressure by way of the side valve. this worked but again, the next time it was raised it froze again. adam aknowledged the problem and said to return it for repair, however i would have to pay shipping, ($60) and possibly the cost to have it shipped back to me. this would total over $120 in shipping for "warranty" work. adam then got pissy with me when i expressed my displeasure with their work, their quality control, testing proceedures, and shipping/warranty policies. these folks are running a scam and should not be dealt with on any level. im sorry i didnt investigate further before sending the unit in. read more

I have been performing repairs professionally and as a hobby for 50 years. I recently purchased a machined aftermarket part for a Yamaha outboard. After contacting Five Star Marine and faithfully following their advice, it became very apparent that the part would not work in my Yamaha. Simply put the threads were not compatible. No problem so far! The amazing part was that Five Star Marine could not possibly believe their part did not fit. They constantly blamed the customer and offered nothing but excuses. Probably the worst example of customer service I have ever been a part of! I purchased the Yamaha OEM part and it installed without difficulty! I'd been toying with idea of purchasing a used Trim Tilt unit for my Suzuki 90hp oil injected ancient out board. Aside from putting a sheen on the water when I tried to use it, it was a PITA to raise and lower. After a little research I found 5 Star and there advise regarding buying off eBay and rebuilding the existing, I jumped in. First off I called to verify that they would / could tackle a 27 yr old unit that had never been serviced (I think anyway). Devon assured me that it would be no problem, quoted a figure of $470.00 for the standard rebuild. OK.... right in line with the web site. I asked him to contact me if it was going to be more than a little bit higher. Standard practice for me even with local businesses. Spent a little over $70.00 to ship the unit off to Florida. Just short of two weeks later (ground shipping this time of year - slow) Amanda calls to tell me the T&T is ready to ship, do I have a credit card handy, and they'll ship it right out. The final cost is $875.00. ...WTF... She explains that they had to do extra work cause the piston rods were pitted and something else I didn't catch while trying to recover. I asked why I wasn't called to authorize the work - no answer - she said they could help a little with the bill and took $50.00 off. Also that was the very best she could do. While digesting this there was a pause on my part..... where upon Amanda said if I didn't want to pay they could sell the unit with no problem. I won't say it was a threat, but the meaning was clear to me. I told her I wasn't happy but I wanted my T&T unit back. So I paid the $825.00 (adjusted) and fumed until today when it arrived. I have yet to open the box and look, knowing that it will not be gold platted. For an old retired guy on a fixed income, and driving UBER a couple nights a week to help make ends meet and still have a few disposable bucks each month (I like to take my bride to dinner and a movie) this really hurts. I was looking for a place to buy parts for my tilt and trim and came across five star, took a look at their website and gave them a buzz to see if they had what I needed. They suggested i send it in to them to be rebuilt. I figured this would be easier than trying to mess with the damn thing myself and sent it off the next day. A few days later I get a call telling me my rebuild is ready to be shipped back to me, rebuild service cost just over $400, and some parts needed replacing, entire bill came to just over $600 with the parts they had to replace. Had it back to me in just a few days no cost shipping. Put it back on the boat and off I go! Works like new again! Devon and his team really helped me out , may cost a little more than I was expecting after parts but worth every penny to have what I consider a brand new tilt and trim in perfect working order again. read more
