Based on two experiences with Five Star plumbing, I feel they are mediocre. They advertise well on Yelp and are at the top of the list. Positives: + answer the phone and quick response. + courteous staff + clean and they use mats to protect floors Negatives: - Both times they initially sent a less capable plumber who had to call in a "master plumber" which delayed the process. - Paid for general plumbing inspection/survey that missed an ongoing leak that had to be addressed when I found it the following day. - Didn't notify me the severity of a different leak under our house. Didn't look at the meter. - Suggested using a leak detection service without offering temporizing measure. Asked me to them know when the leak was located. - After greater than 100,000 gallon difference in our monthly water bill, I chose to turn off our water main. (A competitor was able to isolate the leak same day so we could turn our water main back on.) - High and non-transparent prices. "Your discount was automatically calculated in the computer" though there was no reference to it on the invoice. If you need someone to come out right away, they are quick to respond. If your problem has any complexity, I would suggest trying elsewhere or at least getting another quote. read more

Called for a leaky faucet, paid 69 dollars for dispatch fee and had the guy leave after telling me that it would cost upwards of 700 dollars to replace a faucet handle. Though the guy was nice and seemed to know what he was doing, I can't justify that price. read more

This outfit should change their name to One Star Plumbing Heating Cooling @!! Six weeks ago I heard their paid radio program advertising an inexpensive tune-up/inspection for new customers. I scheduled an appointment for a Saturday with no problem. The rep called me to confirm the appointment and ask if I could move the appointment to Monday. I told her I specifically asked for a Saturday appointment because of my work schedule. A man called me back in a few minutes and explained that they reserve the weekend for emergency call-outs. I explained why I needed the appointment to be Saturday and that is the way they are going to have to have it. So much for being a ethical company run by people who keep their word. It is not uncommon for companies to advertise great customer service a lot less common for companies to actually provide good customer service. Five Star actually provides great customer service, I recently had an issue where an error was made almost a year ago. I had a pop-off valve leaking by. Had Five Star come out and Paul gave me an estiimate to replace pop-off valve. Said he would reroute my drain line for free. Yeah, right. We were told the repair guy would be here between 8 and 9am, showed up at 930am. Then had to Google the name of our tankless water heater to get info on it. Then spent pretty much the next 2 hours on the phone with the manufacturer's Tech support, so pretty obvious he had no clue what to do. When I mentioned maybe we needed a more exp. tech to help us, he claims he "installs these all the time." Then without using a manometer to test gas flow levels, without cleaning the ignitor rod, he finally gets off the phone and then tells me we need a new ignitor unit even though he ran no tests. Then tells me its going to cost $350! To install a $9 part that simply snaps in right in the front?! I called Noritz's tech support myself and they had their entire conversation noted. Five Star's guy was given all the steps, which he didn't do, but jumped ahead to the end when he was told "when all else fails, it may be the ignitor." He also told us our 12 year old unit was on its last legs and he was surprised it lasted this long - the Noritz tech guy laughed and said their units last 20+ years easy, much longer than the larger tank water heaters. The Five Star guy just BS'd me all morning, what a waste of my day. Ordered the part ourselves and Noritz said to call them back, that they'd be happy to walk us through it. Our neighbors told is they get regular maintenance done for $150 or so each year The Five Star guy told us if we paid the $350 for the install, he do the maintenance for "free, which would save us $450." Needless to say, we do NOT recommend this company at all....what a train wreck. read more

It's never fun when it's the dead of summer and your A/C goes out. Five Star was not the first place I called. They were however, the first place to make me feel like I was important and that my call mattered. Service was clear, prompt and relatively painless. The only part that wasn't was the price tag, but hey, these things happen. Emily was the dispatcher and she was very congenital and efficient (much appreciated). Joshua came to our home and got to work without further ado. I found him to be personable, capable and trustworthy. He found our problem readily and offered solutions. He got the job done quickly. As this was on a Monday and my husband was at work, it fell to me to take care of the matter. The representative stated they do not clean they only replace ducts......website and TV commercial CLEARLY state these services are provided. Our downstairs AC stopped working Friday night. After a call Saturday morning the service representative promised someone would arrive that day, but it might be in the evening. The technician showed up at 8pm and was friendly and attentive even after a long day of working. Realizing the issue was a simple fix caused by our drip pan being full, the technician corrected the issue and ensured all was in working order. We have an annual service plan and when we received our invoice, it was for $0. Even after the same day service, and a 2-hr drive time for the technician, it still didn't cost us anything. Even with similar service plans, other companies surely would have charged us for after-hours and same day service, but not Five Star. Can not recommend enough! read more

Five Star Plumbing provided some good work last year. I agreed to have them give me a checkup of my plumbing on March 15, 2021. Unfortunately, this was a completely unacceptable experience. The plumber showed up in muddy books, and did not offer to wear a mask. The inspection was cursory at best, he did not even have a flashlight to look under sinks. He tried to sell a $3,000 water heater just because mine had exceeded its warranty. The worst was checking the water pressure. I needed to replace the pressure adjustment valve for around $600 because the pressure was 100 PSI. First, the pressure was checked a year ago and was 50 PSI. I know failures do not have a schedule so I checked all three bibs in my house and the readings were from 49 to 54 PSI. I guess this guy had this scam work before and thought I hadn't invested $10 for my own water pressure meters. Maybe it was the fact I am retiree. If this is not criminal it should be. read more

Don't use these guys for plumbing, especially if you're new to homeownership or unfamiliar with your plumbing system. They convinced us that what should've been a relatively straightforward fix (I learned later) was actually a week-long project involving the replacement of our entire plumbing and water system. When we got the quote, they told us our plumbing system was not functioning and basically draining into the crawl space. Later in the week, when I asked about info for insurance, the head guy told me insurance wouldn't cover it because it was "unnecessary." He also assured us they were taking pictures of everything along the way, but at the end of the week we got a handful of unclear photos of the same one section of pipe. Don't use this company if you don't want to pay an exorbitant amount for unnecessary work that they'll try to convince you is necessary. read more

I had a problem with communication over the work that was going to be done and the cost. However, the true character of a company only comes out when there is a problem. After I wrote the owner an e-mail expressing my disappointment, he called me back, apologized for the technician not having communicated what he was doing beforehand, informed me that that is not their standard practice, and actually refunded me for the charges that had not been discussed prior to the work. Sometimes problems arise with any company, and I can say from my experience, that Five Star deals with issues in a kind respectful manner and truly do seek good customer service. I would recommend them and will use them again the next time I need a plumber. read more

This is a long review detailing the sub par experience I had with 5 star. In January of 2018 our older HVAC unit went out during a cold snap. I read some reviews on local companies, and was impressed by the reputation that 5 star had. The technician was prompt in getting to our home and diagnosing the unit. He said that it was leaking Freon, and that he could put a band aid on it for now but that it would probably need to be replaced very soon. About 30 minutes after the repair the unit went out again as the tech had said it probably would. He got in touch with the salesman who was able to come out within the hour to discuss replacing our unit. After some review of our home he talked me into replacing the unit and ductwork as well as adding insulation in the attic. Total cost over $12000. The salesman and repair technician are the end of the good news. The work was scheduled for two weeks after my meeting with the salesman. The weather at the time was in the teens at night. 5 star was supposed to bring space heaters but didn't. We ended up calling the emergency line after 10 and were lucky enough to reach one of the few good managers that they have. She couldn't believe that they had forgotten us in the cold, and brought us heaters. I give props to that woman she was one of the few good ones! The end of the two weeks landed on a snow day. They didn't come out due to safety concerns for their employees(I get it). They came the next day, but didn't show up until mid afternoon. We were very excited to finally get started! The problem? Five star only showed up to rip out my old duct work. Opening the old vents only left us colder then we already were. The words of the install team were that they were busy(we had waited two weeks) and that they only came that day to make an appearance to keep us happy. Two days later they came back with the full install team. The team was friendly enough, but were very young and immature. At one point during the install the crew heard an ice cream truck coming down our street and completely stopped working. I mean I'm taking guys running out of my house and crawl space to take an ice cream break. Consistently used foul language inside my mom. Worked very slow, and installed the vents in a way that later had to be repaired during the process of selling our home. At one point during the install when I wasn't home my wife heard the crew leader yell "You ****** broke it!" as they were working in our crawl space. We never heard what they broke so we left it alone assuming they fixed it. We just really wanted this job complete. We later found out that our AC unit was damaged! Pictures to follow with that. The whole process to install our new system including inspections took over a month. Over a month in the cold. My daughter was only 3 months old at the time. I wish the story ended here, but unfortunately there is more. A few months after the install we were preparing our home to sell, and found significant damage to our BRAND NEW AC UNIT! I called 5 star immediately, and was told that the install manager would call. I missed his called but called immediately back. No answer. The same thing happened the next day! No call back! I finally talked to him the next day and he assured me that someone would be out that day to view my issue. No one came to view it and no one called. We waited a couple days and then my wife called again. The female associate in the office was rude to her. Probably due to the fact I had sent several emails regarding my frustration. None of which were rude or threatening. Finally that day they sent a technician out to view the damage. We were away from home, but were told that someone would call us that afternoon to discuss the damage. Again NO ONE CALLED! My wife called again (gave them two days), and they said Larry the owner was involved in the incident now and that we would be called that afternoon. NO ONE CALLED AGAIN! It's been two weeks since we have spoken to someone. At this point I'm honestly convinced that their way of dealing with customer complaints is to just ignore them until they go away. My wife and I are very patient people, but we are done dealing with this company. We are washing our hands of the incident because it's just not worth the frustration anymore. We have considered going to the local magistrate to demand at least some sort of compensation considering we paid $12000 for a damaged unit. Also the crawl space door they replaced failed a home inspection and will have to be repaired. Please be wary of this company. They have great branding, but fail to deliver when things go south. read more

So far we've really appreciated five star. Devin came out in the summer to look at our unit. He fixed it and told us our best option with the pricing. Then we purchased a new home (to us) and had David come out to look at it today. He broke all the bad news to us (because our unit hadn't been taken care of and was old) but it was very helpful to understand what was going on. He spent his time inspecting everything. DO NOT PURCHASE A WARRANTY FROM FIVE STAR! IT'S A COMPLETE SCAM! They hardly perform work, they just try to sell you more stuff. My husband and I purchased a home and the previous owner purchased a 1-year warranty for us on a new A/C system through Five Star. This warranty supposedly covered the system and an annual check-up with filter change. We recently called when we noticed a weird smell as soon as we turned on the A/C for the Spring. My husband is an engineer and while investigating the smell, he noticed that the drain was installed without a proper P-trap, thus the lines were clogged and creating mold. When we turned it on, we smelled the odor. While I don't know the type of mold, but this could potentially be a dangerous problem. Here are all the lines Five Star gave us to do NOTHING: 1) I don't see records that we installed the unit, just a thermostat (this was later backtracked) 2) Your warranty is from the date of warranty purchase not date of move-in, so your warranty expired 6 days ago. Please pay $360 to renew your warranty. If you do renew the warranty, it only waives the $69.99 dispatch fee. We can't guarantee the repair will be covered under warranty. You'll still be responsible for parts and labor 3) The said that P-trap clean out was part of their annual check up covered under warranty. My husband said this inspection was clearly not done during the annual check-up process. They didn't care and still said they wanted to charge us for any parts and labor. In fact, the only thing they did during the annual check-up process was change an air filter and try to sell us another A/C unit and warranty, saying that if the blower was cracked, we could have carbon monoxide in our home. They wanted us to pay for an additional "blower inspection." and then quoted us a new unit.... scare tactics versus quality workmanship. My husband is looking up Greenville county codes on A/C unit P-traps clean-out and if we do in fact find that Five Star didn't install our unit properly, we will submit a complaint with the BBB. Thankfully, we ARE covered through our buyer's home warranty program, so no need to work with Five Star's scam warranty. read more

Gave us an exhorbantly high price of $1700.00 to clean an exit pipe and put in a cleanout valve. Roto Rooter came within the same hour, did it for $400.00 and the cleanout valve was already there. So Five Starr actually LIED and was going to put a cleanup valve in when it was already there!! read more

So the pilot light wouldn't light on our water heater so I called Five Star, the company that installed the water heater. Well, instead of a technician they sent a salesperson who tried to convince me I needed to spend $4560 on a whole new water heater and that I had to pay for a monthly service plan to get that "great price"! My wife came home from work and we had an upstairs toilet that had overflowed and leaked throughout the downstairs of my house. I called Five Star Plumbing, and Terry was over in 30 minutes. He immediately addressed the problem, and showed me what a poor grade of toilets and fixtures the builder had put in my house. Terry came back the next day and I upgraded all 3 toilets in my house. After my heat went out last week I called 5-Star and was given a 4 hour appointment window with a 30 minute call ahead. I did not receive any updates from them and 6 1/2 hours later called to talk to a service manager. He said it wasn't his fault that the repairman got caught up on an earlier job but did say they should have communicated it with me. After some discussion, he did send another repairman to my house who quickly told me the problem was "not good," that my gas valve needed to be replaced to the tune of $1200. After writing up the estimate, he told me that his manager had authorized him to give me a break due to the appointment confusion and that the price was $895. I was not comfortable with this so I called for a second opinion this week and another repair company came out, did a thorough inspection and explained to me how he arrived at his conclusion, which was a clogged pilot line. All that was needed was to disconnect it, clear it out and everything, including my broken gas valve, has been working perfectly since then. Total cost $85. I have called 5-Star 3 times since to try to convey what happened and have not received a phone call back. I would NEVER recommend this company. They are either poorly trained or completely dishonest, neither of which is acceptable to me. If you use them, please get a second opinion. read more

Our air conditioner wasn't working properly. We just moved to the area and they had great reviews. However, they got to our house and priced us out for three different options. We were told the cheapest option would probably fix our problem and it was $891. So we chose that option. However, 24 hours later our air was not working again. We were told that they would come back out and do 2nd go no charge. When we called them back and they now gave us a new problem/option. For a discounted price of $1000 we could get them to come out and fix it. Donnie does not know what he is doing and loves to up-charge for work. Sorry not wasting anymore money on them!! They are crooks. What they did normally costs between $100-$250 (we've called around the area and Asheville)and they took us for granted!! 5 Star Plumbing Service Their pricing is outrageous, the technician was very quick to identify the problem due to the years experience. The problem was the regulating valve, a simple valve with a water input and output. The replacement required to turn off the water supply, drain the water and remove the old valve and install the new. Then turn water supply back on. Maybe this operation took an hour. The bill was $328.00 with me supplying the part. We had another issue which required a simple replacement part under the sink from Moen. The part is supplied free of charge from the manufacture. I asked if this part could be installed once it came in as it was part of the call. He said "no" and if we wanted it installed it would be another an additional $192.00 for 5 minutes of work. I am 74 and have to have my shoulder replaced is the only reason I requested this simple task. I would not recommend them to anyone. read more
