Sara Childress is amazing. She's incredibly talented and also exceedingly modest - a combination that doesn't come around very often. We spent about a dozen sessions together and I am absolutely thrilled with her work. Not only do I now have the most beautiful floral piece on my arm (happily forever) but I've made a friend with a very interesting person who's work ethic is incomparable. The amount of preparation and research that she put into our detailed project is mindblowing, and it really shows in the finished product. She has a decade of experience in this industry, and I would consider her to be a trustworthy advisor in regard to artwork. I love that she is so committed to creating lasting and beautiful pieces that she will do everything she can to steer clients away from project ideas that aren't realistic or won't live up to the expectation of the recipient. This is the only place I would ever go for a tattoo. I'm a massage therapist so I see a LOT of tattoos. The very best ones always come out of the Flaming Dragon. I went in yesterday to get my wrist done and Brad drew it up (better then my original picture) and got me in right on the spot. The whole experience was great, love the atmosphere and I LOVE my new tattoo. I would go see Brad again in a heartbeat. I decided to give Flaming Dragon a try after a cousin and an Aunt and Uncle had great things to say about them. I was not disappointed! I had a tattoo I got at the age of 17. So obviously it was something that needed covering up. The shop I was at before recommended black or grey clouds to cover this particular piece up. Well since I am not into dark and gloomy that would not work. Had one other artist say they didn't want to cover up the work. Enter Flaming Dragon and one of their artists Brad. I came in with an idea, set an appointment and hoped for the best. (See my other review on another tattoo company). He let me know there may be some bleed through and multiple sessions. I assured him I was fine with this and didn't really care if you could faintly see what was underneath. My last experience with getting a tattoo was not very pleasant. My artist was very heavy handed and I was in pain for some time following that appointment. Naturally when showing for my appointment with Brad all I could think about was how much this was going to hurt for the next several days. The cover up went extremely well and there will be no sign of the tattoo underneath it once my 2nd visit is completed. Most importantly, I was in zero pain the next day. I could hardly tell I even went through 4 hours in the chair!! The environment is very cool and the artists are as well. I enjoyed my time there and look forward to finishing up this piece and then working on more with Brad. I definitely recommend this shop to anyone looking for a good place to go. read more

Went in to schedule a tattoo, chose Scott. Talked about my idea for about 20 minutes. He was skeptical but said he'd do it. During the consultation he had given me a couple of ideas too which I researched. Came in for my appointment, didn't like the design he made and asked him to do something else, he said no and kept my deposit. I will never go back and will never recommend this place to anyone else. This was going to be my first tattoo and was incredibly meaningful to me, which Scott was well aware of. Good thing Scott is the owner of both shops so the only person I could talk to about this dilemma was throwing a hissy fit over me not liking the design. All in all I would rather lose my deposit ($100) than have a stubborn artist who objects to what I want on MY body. Go somewhere else. read more

Imagine two little old ladies of 60, although I don't look it or feel it, trotting in to get tattoos. I know it sounds silly but it's on my bucket list and now I can check it off. That said, Brad was amazing. I told him what I wanted, he sketched it, did the tattoo and was funny on top of it all. Thought it would hurt a lot more than it did so I was pleasantly surprised. My first tattoo (from another artist at a completely different shop) was a disaster. I still keep it covered up and I'm hoping to have it fixed by the absolutely wonderful and amazing Darin. I came in with a vague idea of a tattoo and made an appointment with Darin after I saw how gorgeous his artwork was. After waiting for the appointment to arrive the day had come, I was going to get a tattoo of a trilobite! I originally wanted a very black and white line drawn textbook version of my favorite fossil arthropod, but Darin (thankfully) encouraged me to go with some color. The price was right, too, charging me significantly less than what I expected to shell out for this amazing piece of art on my arm. I LOVE this tattoo, it's so bright and awesome and nerdy. The layout of the place is odd. You walk in and it's very dark and everything is wood. There is a large open space (for people to hang out...?) And then you walk a few more feet and the tattoo table is right there, basically on display. The female artist wouldn't allow me to get what I wanted on my ribs because the writing wouldn't fit, even though all I wanted were five words in a smaller font. And she didn't agree with the design of my tattoo. She also didn't seem interested in tattooing either. They require $100 CASH deposit.....? And they DO NOT accept credit cards. What a joke. I ended up walking out, went on yelp to find another tattoo parlor, and got the tattoo I wanted. I don't recommend wasting your time or money here. read more

If you're looking to have your first piercing, or your fifth, you'll really appreciate going to see Chris. I went in to see him as a nervous, apprehensive 30-something who had always wanted to have her nose pierced. Chris immediately put me at ease and was so nice and friendly that I no longer had any anxiety over what I was about to have done. He talked me through the whole process, showing me the jewelry, describing what he was doing, leaving no doubt that everything was extremely clean and sanitary, and answering any questions I had along the way. I left feeling great about my choice, and looking great. When I had a problem later (not ANYTHING to do with Chris - I messed with the piercing too much and it got a bit red and icky - my own fault!!!!!) he gladly took a look a reassuring look at it for me, and following his instructions, everything cleared up quickly. I also changed jewelry one time - which was a mistake - and Chris helped get the "bad post" pulled out (which I had gotten elsewhere - not from him - which I should have done) and fixed me up with a new one. I took two friends there shortly after I had mine done to have their noses "done." Both were very happy. I've since had my navel pierced by Chris as well. He's just a truly nice person, a professional, and I highly recommend you see him. read more

My experience went from awesome to a disaster during my actual appointment. Zero points for Sara C. at the Pacific Avenue location. I had 2 small pieces I wanted done, and she indicated both would probably take about 2 hours in total. She indicated she'd show me some art on the day of the appointment. I returned the next day with a cash deposit and was really excited to get my first tattoo! The day of the appointment came two weeks later, and I unfortunately had not been able to print out the art I'd liked to get done. Due to this, I'd decided to try and see if I could work with Sara to get something else she was comfortable with free-handing done (as I knew she'd blocked out at least 2 hours for me.) I informed her that I unfortunately didn't have the art, and before I could even explain that I wanted to work with her on something else she'd be comfortable with (as it it obviously wasn't her fault I couldn't get the wanted art) Sara's face became angry and she completely lit into me! Rather loudly and repeatedly stating such things such as 'You're wasting my time!', 'If you didn't want to get tattooed why did you come here?' 'I blocked you for three hours, I could tattoo (one of the small tattoos I'd wanted) on you in ten minutes!' I completely understood that she'd blocked out time for me and knew how the situation seemed on her end, but she hadn't even given me a chance to TRY and work with her as I'd been planning and just totally tore me down! I certainly don't think I would have left a $60 cash deposit if I 'hadn't wanted to get tattooed' either. Needless to say I wanted Sara nowhere near me with a needle after that and simply left, not caring about my deposit at all. I wound up getting an appointment at another shop who let me make an appointment without a deposit as I'd just lost mine with no tattoo to show for it. 5 stars for Jason at the 6th Avenue shop, though - I called and explained the situation and he was very professional, apologetic, courteous and indicated that he would call around and get a hold of everyone that needed to be talked to so that I would be taken care of. ** Note - This is a duplicate post because both F.D. shops deserve some love! ** Flaming Dragon Tattoo Co. is one of the best tattoo shops in the Seattle/Tacoma area. I have been to both of their locations on 6th Ave and 38th St. and they are equally exceptional establishments. Their shops are what I call "East meets West", hip and funky environment and walls adorned with eclectic Asian artwork and masks. Both locations are meticulously clean as well as comfortable and all of the artists are amazingly talented and professional and provide the highest quality of work. I had been wanting to get a back tattoo for the longest time and when I heard their artist Scott Schafer specializes in Chinese and bird/fowl artwork I knew he was the one. He listened to me from the beginning and combining my ideas with his many years of expertise has created the most beautiful tattoo for me and has by far exceeded my expectations. Only two sessions in so far and I can't wait to see how the shading and color will turn out! If you live in Seattle/Tacoma you are very lucky! My first experience at this shop was over 3 years ago. I went in to see if I could get a piece on my lower right leg. I wanted something musical with my kids' names. Darin (who is now at the 6th ave location) designed a beautiful piece, and did an awesome job. In June of 2010, I went back to him to do a memorial piece for my Mom, who had suddenly passed away. I went with a drawing that I had done, and he graciously placed it on my left leg for me. (He is a really great guy.) I was so happy with his work!! I had a friend who didn't have any ink yet, and I suggested we go in to see who was there, and get one for her and a new one for me. We met Sara Childress. She is a very hip, young artist who seemed to be down with both tattoos we had chosen. Mine is a sea turtle, tribal style with a rainbow of color. My friend got baby feet walking up her leg, 6 of them. Sara did a wonderful job on my turtle. (Although I feel bad that I took in my own drawing again. My next one will need to be something she can put herself into!) My friend's baby feet turned out absolutely amazing. This shop is clean and fun. They are booked pretty far out, so if you really want to get your ink here, be prepared to wait a while. They are very popular, with good reason. Flaming Dragon is the Premier tattoo parlor in Tacoma. I have had three done there in 14 years. I wish I could afford to go all the time. My latest was finished yesterday. Scott is an amazing artist and tattoo artist as well. He has surrounded himself with good people who know what a tattoo idea should look lile. But most importantly they know what a tattoo will look like in the years to follow. They will tell you if your idea will look like crap in 10 years. I'd much rather have an artist steer me away from making a permanent mistake. If do you "drop in" you probably won't get your ink done that day, that's because they are busy and booked out for months. Scott did my first and second tats, and Sara did my latest. She is a fantastic artist. She took my ideas and was able to fit it perfectly on my calf. It looks amazing. For a younger artist she has great talent and a feel for your art ideas. I will go back to see her again. Remember folks, you get what you pay for. I have a shitty tat on my back that needs to be covered. I thought I would save a few bucks and trust a friend.
