Like other great finds in Germany Schnitzelbank was a Yelp recommended find. Tucked into a side…read morestreet off the main drag we found our way back to this hidden gem. With only a few tables in the place you quickly make new friends and end up dining next to strangers. We originally sat with a couple of local Germans and after they left a musician from the local college joined for her meal. Great schnitzel options here and true charm stood out for us. Would highly recommend this place to others in Heidelberg.

The weather was beautiful for sitting outside. I wish I had gotten our server's name because he was outstanding. Friendly, witty, and willing to help navigate the menu - he made our dining experience even better. We started with a couple of local wines that were amazing - a red and a rosé. Some bread and butter came to our table with our escargot starter and side salad. The bread and starter were delicious. Our snails were hot and garlicky with plenty of juice to sop up. The side salad was also very tasty and fresh. For our mains I went with the Schnitzelbank Platter and my lady went with the Pepper Schnitzel. My platter came with a local delicacy called saumagen, as well as roasted pork, sausage, roasted potatoes, and sauerkraut. The saumagen was the highlight for me. Our server was also excited we got it. It is a local offering consisting of various meats and other items wrapped up in a stomach and served as a loaf-style meat. The pepper schnitzel was also outstanding - the sauce was indeed peppery, but it didn't smother the schnitzel, which was breaded nicely and not dry, as some schnitzels can be. And after all that food, still, an apple strudel. This was so worth it. I don't even like sweets in the USA, but in Europe, they are something else. This was something else. We had a lot of great meals on our trip, but this was probably the best. Not just for the food, but for the overall experience, it's easy to see why this is the shining star in Heidelberg.

I ordered the pork shank, since it's a traditional dish I really wanted to try. Unfortunately, mine turned out quite dry, and a few locals in the group confirmed that it can be hit-or-miss. That said, the rest of the experience more than made up for it. The service was good and the staff were great, managing our big group smoothly and keeping things friendly. The real highlight was the beer--absolutely delicious, rich, and exactly what you'd hope for from a Brauhaus. Overall, while the pork shank wasn't my favorite, the combination of great staff, lively atmosphere, and excellent beer makes Vetter's a spot I'd recommend, especially if you're in Heidelberg with friends or colleagues.

I only ordered a .11l as I didn't want to be carried to the train. I'd eaten a large lunch earlier, so just got the buttered pretzel. It was tasty. My uncle ordered a vegetarian Vetter's Devil and liked it. He got the larger of the 33 and the server said, "don't tell her, but I like you better." Ha! I'll definitely bring friends and family here again.

From first course to last, each dish was inventive, surprising, and -- most importantly -- delicious! We tried: SHARING IS CARING: -Levante (falafel & hummus) -pork belly (melted in your mouth) -Brot und Salz (simple but damn good) -Uuuhmami's finest (probably my favorite of the whole night; I would have licked the glass if I could have) RAW LIKE SUSHI: -Gratinierte Jakobsmuschel (scallop) It's a PINSA: -In Love With You (delish) MAINS: -Marfalde al Tartufo (incredible but rich, definitely one to share) DESSERT: -Alles fuer die Birne (I don't know what was going on here, but it was superb) Service was impeccable but friendly, not fussy. Atmosphere is a little on the louder side (but not so loud I found it hard to hear, more like I just couldn't hear anyone else). Vibe is modern and hip. Apparently the menu changes pretty regularly, which is exactly what would keep me coming back, time after time. Can't wait to return on my next trip!

While the menus were only in German, they weren't hard to understand. The food was fast and plated wonderfully. The salads were full of flavour and fresh fruits/vegetables.
