This was another one of the first restaurants I tried when I arrived in Heidelberg. My friend and I had been walking around all day and were starving and came across this place. We thought it was so adorable and picturesque. The staff was exceptionally friendly and didn't give us a hard time for not knowing how to speak German. I remember the food being delightful as well. Really wonderful restaurant with excellent service and staff. This is my go-to restaurant when bringing small groups to Heidelberg, Perfect location with the terrace but equally wonderful at Christmas Market season with cozy indoor decor, Order a serving of the Kauserschmarrin you will be so glad you did, this week we enjoyed it with plums. The small order of schnitzel will fill you up and if you are lucky to be there during Kürbiscreme soup (pumpkin) you'll be so lucky! Parking in Heidelberg is a bear so I always recommend the train, not alot of large spaces or big park houses in the old town area. read more

Very inexpensive hotel with excellent views of the Aldtadt Bridge from many of the rooms. Make sure to ask which way your room faces when you book if you want a river view. Price includes a substantial, typical German style breakfast (breads, cheeses, yogurt, meats, fruits, juice, coffee, eggs). You'll leave sated and ready to venture out for the day. My room (12?) was on 1st floor (2nd by US standards) and had a gorgeous view of the river and bridge. The decor was out dated (peach drapes and bedspread) but clean. Small refrigerator with modestly priced beers, wine, etc. I didn't find the room noisy despite it being close to the road that lines the river. My room had two twins that were pushed together tightly to form a king sized bed (rare in EU). Shower was way too tiny but normal for EU standards. Wish it had a tub. It was clean. Towels were small but changed even though I'd hung them up to dry. Room had swing out windows that let in nice cool morning air. Individual room heaters. Not sure if there is AC in the summer though. Internet was 3 euro for the entire stay which I felt was reasonable. I had a wee bit of trouble getting it to work but that was my fault, not theirs. Very professional front desk ladies run the place and schedule everyone's breakfast as the breakfast room is small and can only fit maybe 10 people at a time at most. Downfalls of the hotel: on first visit it's difficult to tell where the entry is (it's located in the courtyard seating area of the restaurant - which isn't exactly charming). I was a wee bit embarrassed with colleagues came to breakfast with me in the morning as the entry was just not that impressive. There is no lift so this would be unsuitable for handicapped. All rooms and front desk are on the first (2nd in US) floor. But overall, if you are looking for very comfortable, safe, lodging in the heart of old town Heidelberg, you can't beat the views (if you get a river view room) and value of this place. There is so much to do within walking distance: morning farmer's market, coffee shops, a market by the church square, ATMs, pastry shops. The location is fabulous. I'd gladly book here again. read more

A very beautiful restaurant on the Steingasse, opposite the Old Bridge. Built in 1717, this place has got some history! The Hotel is rated with 3-stars as it comes with En-suite and Radio in each room though Writing desk, Telephone and Colour TV are available by request. Opening times; Monday till Friday 12-15, 18-24 Saturday and Sunday 12-24 The Restaurant serves an array of dishes with daily specials available on the chalk board. The Goldener Hecht restaurant is located right across from the end of the old bridge in Heidelberg, and though we ate inside on a freezing winter day, I can imagine it would be very nice to sit outside in the plaza with a nice local beer and some schnitzel in the summer as well. We started with some of the local beer which was very good, and naturally complimented the meat of our meals. I've never had a bad beer in Germany, and the trend continued at Goldener Hecht. My wife ordered the herrengoulash and really enjoyed it, though could hardly finish it because the portion was so generous. I had a stuffed pork dish which was very good as well. The meat was cooked perfectly and the sauce went very well. Apparently the menu is Austrian themed, but we just noticed the wide variety of delicious cooked meat dishes. We also tried the applestreudel which was covered in vanilla ice cream and delicious. The atmosphere is typical German, with dark wood everywhere, though we were lucky to sit next to the traditional stove which was nice on such a cold day. Service was good. It started off a bit cold but warmed up as we stayed. By the time we left, they offered us a complimentary shot of schnapes for each of us. Great experience. Definitely worth a visit when in Heidelberg. read more

Amazing food if you're willing to cope with the bad service. been there 4 times in couple, dates, group, and with locals and and served in all times by grumpy waitresses. The only good service we got was from a waiter which was completely the opposite of his female colleagues. read more

Friendly, good food and great beer. The Schnitzel was better than most I've tried in Frankfurt and Heidelberg, but not the best. It was a little dry. The potato soup is comforting on a cool day. Horrible wait. We had reservations for 20:00, arrived at least 5-10 minutes early, but our order wasn't taken until 20:20. It's now after 21:00 and our food hasn't arrived. Our waitress said "Two minutes" and lo and behold, our food appeared. I should have said something after 20 minutes. read more

Sadly we had terrible service. Dinner took over 2 hours, without dessert. The schnitzel was pretty good. Spätzle was bland. Mixed green salad was quite delicious. But even with decent food, the service would keep us from coming back. read more

While visiting Germany, my friends and I stopped by here because we saw their menu sitting out and we were all hungry. We ate here back in 2009 and to this day I have not found better Goulash anywhere else. The atmosphere feels cozy but a little packed. Looking forward to the day when I return to Heidelberg to eat here again. read more

While traveling for three weeks all through Germany this is by far the best meal we have eaten! Their Austrian specialties are amazing! This should be on your to-do list. My daughter who is a teen says she rates it above the philosophers trail.. (Ha ha!) The atmosphere was perfect as we sat in the evening watching people walk by in the cool summer breeze. The beers were good and of course the waiter was helpful when we had questions and even checked on us quite a few times (which I have learned can be a rare event from other experiences) - however I digress- the waiter was also happy to help with translations for words I was unsure of and in the end the food was so savory we wish we could return again!
