I go to Flask to see my friends DJ & dance to 80's goth tunes. Occasionally, they do theme, artist, or band nights: Prince, Bowie, Cure, & definitely Hallowe'en. read more

It.... it's something alright. I'll say this, they're definitely a very 'open' crowd, and this is 100% pure, unapologetic DIVE bar in every sense. Not a friendly bartender, a diverse crowd of 'misfits' (we'll leave it at that), a dank place, but the karaoke seemed fun and lively, the drinks were affordable and had good variety, and it's definitely not a dull place that's for sure. I've been to some dive bars that are like this and are total pits, that have absolutely no redeeming qualities to them whatsoever, and i'm pleased to say this is BETTER than those places. I get it. It works. BUT i will say it would benefit them to step up their bartending game in terms of trying to find friendlier people. I saw my bartender have verbal fights with a few patrons and something tells me this is pretty common. If this place had that 'it' bartender, it could be great, but that one little detail makes it hard to give it my full thumbs up. Karaoke did look fun though. The crowd was into it. Enthusiastic. Me and Flask go WAY back. I moved to Portland about 7 years ago and upon arrival I started frequenting this place. I would go, hang out at the bar, and chat with Jess (the owner) or one of the other bartenders. It was chill, quiet, and had some nice tapas. I remember seeing some of the most diverse local acts prior to their shift to local fame, Lady Lamb the Beekeeper is an example. She was sitting on a couch, playing guitar, to maybe 8 people. It was awesome. Fast forward 7 years. Flask has evolved and so have I. I don't really frequent the nightlife scene as often as I used to. Flask is now more of an tiny electronic dance club full of very sweaty people (which can be very smelly, I mean really stinky). Friday night is their "house music" party, which is almost always packed. They also have a queer dance party once a month called (Sub)Merge, where they play some great 90's and now dance music. When I am out in Portland I often walk my way to Flask to see what the vibe is. Most of the time I walk in and decide to walk out, not because anything is wrong, just because it's not what I'm looking for that evening. If you are tired of trying to fit into the club scene on Wharf St., this may be the place for you to try on. See if it's your size that night. If not, come back for a second fitting, it may eventually hug you in all the right places. read more

I really liked this place! Walked by it on our way to The Little Tap House and heard live music. I'd never been to either but after looking at the cool menu but lack of people decided to give Flask a try. They had great specials like Sloppy Cider (you need to try this) & $4 Guinness. Very small, if you see a seat grab it. Musicians mingle with the crowd and there is a great sense of belonging and warmth there. I like this place & can't wait to go back. read more

It's become the go to dance spot in Portland where the music is top notch if you like electronic. Live bands also frequent Flask which provides you the opportunity to see some amazing bands as if they were playing a private concert in your home. Tuesday nights are $2 pint nite, can't beat that! Liked the live karaoke, but the bartender was unbelievably rude and condescending. We were going to order drinks from her and give a tip because we were enjoying the karaoke, and instead she made snide remarks and then mocked us from being from Massachusetts, likely because she did t know we were going to be tipping. Regardless, inexcusable in my opinion. She was completely unwelcoming and seemed to just be hanging out with her group of old friends. Was a total clique. I have never had such a negative experience before. Would not return and would not recommend. read more

Flask Lounge is still a bit of a mystery to me. The plain brick facade, the lack of windows, and the small artsy sign hanging next to the door had me second guessing whether or not to enter for a long time. Finally I went in. The first night had me convinced that Flask Lounge was a total jock bar with the Red Sox blaring on the big screen. The second time I went in, it was clearly a lesbian bar. One night it was karaoke night, and then another night it was a plain old bar. Good prices, comfortable atmosphere, and some really greasy bar food. I like it, but you never know what crowd you'll get. So far I've liked them all. read more

A bit divey, which I usually can get into, Flask has some character for sure, with hip DJs throwing down some underground tunes with their cohorts milling about and taking in the beats on a Saturday night. The music was pretty cool. We came at 9pm for a beer or two, so it was sparsely attended. What really put me off was the gruff bartender, with a perpetual puss on her face. You are working for tips, right? What gives? Some dude is waving about brightly colored globular rave lights. There's the token dreadlocked dude with a tie die shirt and sandals. Bespectacled hipsters with manbuns. Pseudo-hippie girls who smell like cumin. A woman who looks like Robin Quivers. I would imagine that according to SNL's Stefan, this would be Portland's hottest spot. I'm really trying to figure out the vibe here. I am bemused, bewildered, befuddled. read more

This is my favorite bar in Portland right now. The atmosphere is really cool with brick walls and a great bar. This place features some of the best electronic music including acts like Jhjort and Moshe who are cutting edge djs you will not see in the Old Port. This gives a great alternative to the old port crowd. You definitely get your moneys worth on the mixed drinks here. read more

First time in Portland was a memorable one for sure once I decided to pop into this local bar on a Friday night. The bartender immediately engaged with me as if she had known that I wasn't from around town. The people surrounding the bar were just as open and friendly, which made my experience that much more amazing. As the night went on, a DJ set up shop and started playing some great beats, which I didn't expect coming from this " local laid back bar" scene that I had experienced earlier in the night. The music filled the room with great energy and therefore I decided to stay until the last call. If you are deciding where to go while in Portland, I highly recommend this place... I really wanted to love this place. I have so many friends who regularly visit this bar/club and have had some great nights dancing and chatting with people here. Unfortunately the service from their sexist female bartender is less than poor, as she takes advantage of men ordering. After being passed over many times, I ordered the cider on tap. Returning for more cider only to be charged an extra dollar each time for my drink. $5, $6, then $7. I returned another night and again waited, then ordered the same cider from her and a shot of rum for a total of $17. She unfortunately has ruined this place for me and made it feel like an unwelcoming business. I will no longer spend my money here. read more

It might not always be super packed or the trendiest place on the block, but the people are the best kind of weird and super friendly. Really wanted to like this place since I love the atmosphere dive bars typically have, and I would consider this place a dive more than a music venue even though they may have live music every so often. The crowd when we came in seemed like a bunch of people in their mid 20s that all grew up together and just continue to hang out with one another. The first thing that hit us when we walked in was the sour smell like the carpet had been beer drenched and never cleaned. Not a lot of seating available so if you're not at the bar good luck. We just wanted a couple of beers for a night cap since the place we were staying was right around the corner. Lauren's beer was poured in a pint glass that we discovered was chipped luckily before she put her mouth on it. The keg system must have needed maintenance because the beer was pouring warm and I could tell just by the guy pouring it because he had a bucket under the pint glass to discard the extra head the line was pushing through. After my semi-cool beer we decided that was enough, settled up and left. We'll probably stop in next time we're in Portland because I want to like Flask Lounge but they need to get some things right in the mean time. read more

Happy Hour was a little weird....it was like a scratch-off sale at a department store but instead you had a 60% chance of full-price, 20% chance of fifty cents off and 20% chance of half-price on your drink. That's ok though, the place was nearly empty at 6-pm-ish and the juke box was at our disposal. It looked like a local band was going to play there later (we did not stay) and overall seemed to be a fun dive bar. read more

I have been to Flask twice, and on both occasions I really enjoyed myself. There is no set "crowd" at Flask, as it is very mixed (though I have never been there on a Sunday or weekday). Great place to go to kick off a Friday or Saturday evening. Best time to go is around 9-10pm on Friday or Saturday. I kinda think of Flask as the "pre-clubbing" club. Great house music provided by the DJ (on weekends only, I suspect), packed dance floor, competitively priced drinks. read more

The coolest spot in Portland. Away from the regular crowds of Old Port during the night. Free music. There's some great events going on in here, and I'm always eager of what they'll do next. The electronic music is solid. You've got DJ's of all different variations that can bring drum & bass, hip hop, and trance. The vibe is off the hook. read more
