Built in 1902, this triangle-shaped building is one of the first skyscrapers to grace the Manhattan skyline. Daniel Burnham was the architect responsible for this wonder. It was originally named the Fuller Building but its unique shape coined the nickname flatiron. Many thought it looked like the type of iron used in those days. The neighborhood where the building stands is the Flatiron District. National Historic Landmark since 1989 and a NYC landmark in 1966. Steel building. This is one of my favorite buildings to visit in New York City. I am a big fan of architecture and remember studying this building in my Art History classes. It is up there with the Empire State Building as one of the most iconic buildings in Manhattan. Mostly because of its flat triangular shape. It is named Flatiron because it resembles a clothing iron. Flatiron Building is significant in art history because it was built in 1902 during the Beaux-Arts Classicist movement. Grand Central Terminal was also built during this timeframe. It is 22 stories high and is one of the city's oldest surviving skyscrapers. The facade of the three-story base is made of limestone. The last time I was here, it had scaffolding all around it for some renovation work. I am glad that they are doing all that they can do to keep this historic building intact. There is a small park across the street called Madison Square Park where you can sit and marvel at this architectural wonder. There are a few other "flatiron" buildings that have been built in other countries. But this one is the most famous one. read more

The Flatiron Building is yet another iconic piece of architecture in New York City. I absolutely love getting to see locations and sites of places I used to marvel at in books as a kid. The Flatiron Building certainly fits that bill. Unfortunately, the whole front end of the building was covered in scaffolding the day I was able to see it. Bah! First Big Ben and now this! lol Oh well, what are you gonna do? :P You will find Madison Square Park right next door as well. I still was able to see enough! Very flipping cool. 4 stars. read more

The name of this building is called Flatiron and yes it does look like a Flat Iron. When I came, the building is under repair. You can still see the building. I heard it has been under repair for months already. Note that they have free tours but because of Covid and the repair, the free tours have stopped for now. Hopefully, the free tours resume soon and I can join in, next time I visit NY. You can still take photo of the building from across the street in Madison Park. read more

Bummer that the Flat Iron building was under some sort of constructions while I was there. Not sure what they were doing to the building but it had bunch of metal wires around it. However, it's a very interesting shape for a building, more on the slender side. I wonder what the inside looks like since I only got to pass by it. Unfortunately when we came here in December, you could hardly recognize the building because there was scaffolding around it. Seems like it's been up for at least 8 months now. I didn't realize I passed it (I walked from the back) until a NYC resident friend told me lol. Luckily we also wanted to visit the Harry Potter store & the Washington Square Park, so not a total let down to come see this. At least I saw it & got a picture with it...whether or not it was an amazing sight is another thing. I would have loved to see a sign with some historical background so I could have seen a black & white version (back in the day) with some history information. read more

No doubt that NYC have hidden gem places not mentioning the historical history behind some buildings. On Sun, August 1, I enjoy it a NYC ( Flat Iron Building tour) The tour started at 11:00 am, had about twenty five people. I have the opportunity to meet this amazing guy Mr. Mike Kaback he knows NYC from head to toe! He explained everything behind the history of some buildings in my personal opinion the tour is very short and we only walked from 23rd st east ave to 23rd st and Madison Ave for an hour and half Based on what I noticed in some guest they wasn't satisfied with the tour in fact a lady as him if the tour included the Empire State Building, (he said yes if you go and pay for it) some guest reactions were shocking! This tour could be amazing for kids because school doesn't teach kids United States history as before specially The Constitution of the United States of America. Overall it was a good experience for me personally I learned things that I didn't and as many people we just pass by those buildings not knowing the history behind. Like he said NYC has changed throughout the years Have more restaurants, Office buildings, hotels, Celebrities and one of the most popular tourist destinations. Heard so many good things about this building, but honestly, just not doin' it for me. I live in New York and every now and then I have to walk by the Flatiron, and believe me, it's way better on a postcard than IRL. I'll literally walk ten extra blocks just to go around it. The Flatiron Building constructed in 1902 in the Beaux-Arts style by the Chicago School architect Daniel Burnham at the intersections of Broadway, Fifth Avenue, 22nd and 23rd Streets, in Manhattan, was meant to be the headquarters for the George A. Fuller Company, a large Chicago contractor. Only 22 stories tall, and six feet wide at its narrow point, it was never meant to be the tallest building in the Big Apple - just one of the most beautiful and unique. It stands today having achieved that continuing notoriety. Despite fear that it was too skinny to withstand the harsh wind vectors that blow almost constantly there, it remains unbowed in its 300 feet of steel skeleton and limestone & terra cotta carved exterior façade. In its one hundred sixteen years, it has become the iconic symbol of the City That Never Sleeps, and the most photographed structure in Manhattan. I have always been among its admirers. My mother worked there at her first job after high school, and told stories about how the designers failed to install any women's restrooms in the entire building, and how that was remedied by alternating male and female bathrooms on alternate floors. Needless to say, if you had to go, you better plan ahead! She knew her way around the building after working for a clothing company with headquarters there, and she took my sister and I on a tour, with special attention paid to the classic (if first forgotten) ladies rooms. Even then it was easy to feel the glorious intention exhibited throughout. Fuller was gone by the1929 financial crisis, and the urban planners' dream of a second business zone to compete with lower Manhattan was stalled until the 1990's, when new money needed a place to live, along with all the commerce that went with it. Until then, this neighborhood was almost barren of anything was attractive other than Madison Square Park and its Arc de Triomphe built after the Civil War, and the Flatiron Building which had gone through several changes to accommodate retail space on the first floor (including a cafe with outdoor seating at the prow, now gone, and new façade on the top floors). The walk from Penn Station to Fifth Avenue and down to Washington Square takes about an hour, with the Flatiron Building somewhere in the middle of the route. It is so very worth taking the stroll to capture part of what is so special about New York City. PS. This is my 2500th review as the count now stands. If u have time and are walking around mid town, you can drop by flatiron building . I'm not sure if u can go in , but it is very pretty and an interesting building .. it's also close to Madison park. If you have a wide angled camera , u can get some good shots . Empire is in the other side .. photographers will love this spot. Beautiful building but right now there's scaffolding around the entire building but it's still great to see it. There's a outdoor coffee shop right next to the building. The city seems to be redoing the roads around there. On one side no cars can no longer go through but on 5th Ave that's where the cars go down. The road that is block off to cars, there's tables and seats where you can just seat down and enjoy the area. There's a park across the way where you can get a full picture of the building without getting hit by the cars or bikes zooming by lol. read more

They have a seating area right across from this building. My coworkers and I just decided to sit down after we left the restaurant we had dinner in. I didnt even realized it until I looked up and saw the tall beautiful building standing in the background of where I was seated. Then we started taking pics. It really is a cool place to just come and chill, they have so many stores and places around you that you could just drop by and site see, or shop. The most cool thing I thought about it was that they have wi-fi so you could sit outside on a nice evening, or day, have a coffee and grab your laptop, camera, some friends etc. and just hang out. This was my second time to visit here, and since weather was different, I was able to capture different images this time from last time. I spent about 20 mins this time taking pictures and I must say I am pleased with the end result. Depending on what time and which season you visit, you will be capturing different color. This place will be my must visit at each visit to NYC. I am just so fascinated by this building. Just be mindful of traffics. Busy intersection here with both cars and pedestrians. Look behind you and you can see the top of the Empire State Building as well. A New York icon! The Flatiron Building is a classic structure to withstand time through the years. As I walk the triangular base of the street, it is adorned with either side of Fifth Avenue and Broadway making it unique like no other. It is designated by the NYC Department of Interior as a national landmark in 1989. The Flatiron Building is fascinating in its' size and shape making it a New York City landmark and at 87 meters and 21 floors high, a rather cool addition to the city's bustling skyline, being right on Fifth Avenue in the Flatiron District it is in quite a cool, common location as well and was originally called the Fuller Building, opening in 1902 before being designating as a New York City landmark in 1966, the same year England lifted the World Cup, defeating Germany 4-2 in the final (Sorry as a brit, I couldn't resist). It is in a great location, you can see it from the Empire State Building and being on Fifth Avenue there are many places to shop and eat nearby, but perhaps this landmark doesn't stand out as much due to its' location but still the innovative, unique shape and look of the building can put that to bed. Certainly, not the best landmark in NYC but is perhaps one of the most under-rated. you should go out of your way to see, but it isn't really a place you'd have to go out of your way for due to its' location, but it still is a really cool, different building, named after the iron shape it represents. 4* read more

I just finished writing a review for a the Time Warner center and Shops at Columbus Circle which I've seen being built in my lifetime. Now go back 101 years before Time Warner was completed and yes that's when the Flatiron building was erected. It's mind boggling to think that in the short history of the USA (architecturally speaking) that there were so many buildings and milestones during such a short time. Between Chicago and New York, you have pretty much timeless buildings and landmarks that set the trend creating new benchmarks with style and design. While the Flatiron building was never as tall as many of the buildings that shot up into the sky as quickly as the Woolworth, 40 Wall Street, 70 Pine Street, the Chrysler or Empire State it's still one of those iconic and immediately recognizable buildings for its design and uniqueness that makes it purely stand out among many of its vertical peers. It never needed to be super tall to be special and it seems that it still is. I can't think of another area in NYC that is named after a building in the area. The Flatiron district is essentially where Broadway, 5th Avenue and 23rd street all meet. Broadway being a diagonal street in some places creates these "triangles" also known as squares in midtown. In Flatiron it's General Worth Square and Flatiron Plaza. At 32nd it's Greeley Square, at 34th it's Herald Square, and of course between 42nd and 47th you have the renown Times Square. The Flatiron building took the shape of the space it was given and is a sharp looking pointed triangle. Still timeless, one of the best views I can think of is from the top of the Empire State looking down Broadway, finding the Flatiron is not difficult at all at it's at that open crossroads and basically an unobstructed view. read more
