I just finished writing a review for a the Time Warner center and Shops at Columbus Circle which I've seen being built in my lifetime. Now go back 101 years before Time Warner was completed and yes that's when the Flatiron building was erected. It's mind boggling to think that in the short history of the USA (architecturally speaking) that there were so many buildings and milestones during such a short time. Between Chicago and New York, you have pretty much timeless buildings and landmarks that set the trend creating new benchmarks with style and design. While the Flatiron building was never as tall as many of the buildings that shot up into the sky as quickly as the Woolworth, 40 Wall Street, 70 Pine Street, the Chrysler or Empire State it's still one of those iconic and immediately recognizable buildings for its design and uniqueness that makes it purely stand out among many of its vertical peers. It never needed to be super tall to be special and it seems that it still is. I can't think of another area in NYC that is named after a building in the area. The Flatiron district is essentially where Broadway, 5th Avenue and 23rd street all meet. Broadway being a diagonal street in some places creates these "triangles" also known as squares in midtown. In Flatiron it's General Worth Square and Flatiron Plaza. At 32nd it's Greeley Square, at 34th it's Herald Square, and of course between 42nd and 47th you have the renown Times Square. The Flatiron building took the shape of the space it was given and is a sharp looking pointed triangle. Still timeless, one of the best views I can think of is from the top of the Empire State looking down Broadway, finding the Flatiron is not difficult at all at it's at that open crossroads and basically an unobstructed view. read more

I liked it. It's really worth visiting, it's like in the pictures. You get the feeling how the city once was, at least I did. And the golden watch was really something. When you are here, you should follow the road upwards toward Empire State, visit adidas and all the other stores around there. And when you hit the 46th street (with adidas store) walk on that road until you hit times square. On that road is plenty of good restaurants (Irish restaurants (3)). This is way out of the topic, but you should definitely use some of your time to visit it. read more

The Flat Iron building got a big ole butt! Say what? As a homeless child living in midtown, the first time I encountered this building I walked around its triangular base 10 or twenty times. Located across the street from Madison Park and the Toy center, the buildings surroundings have undergone an extreme makeover. Benches and newly paved streets for the public to assemble at have recently transformed this otherwise just plainly unique building into a community space of sorts. Warm weather and sun bring Sunshine and life to an otherwise odd intersection thanks to these new urban projects. With its close proximity to some decent sight seeing, the flat iron building sits at the crossroads between the top of the Union Square area, Chelsea and the Madison Square Park, midtown area which leads to the Empire State Building, 34 Street and the Wholesale district. You may have tall buildings. You may have wide buildings. Your buildings may even lean. But I assure you, you aint got no building with a big ole butt where you live! If your an art history or architecture student that likes butts, or just a tourist, this is a good place to find what you are looking for. read more

This is a beautiful piece of history that is named after the formation of the roads it sits on. With a great history of controversy it's great for any historian to read. It's not a building that you would go inside for a tour or anything of that nature, it's just a beautiful historic building that everyone should go by and admire at some point. Your trip to the Flatiron building wouldn't be complete unless you relaxed a bit at Madison Sq Park and grabbed some food at the Shake Shack (located in the park) but be warned, the lines during good weather average about an hour or so long. read more

Everyone knows (or should know) the simple history of this building. It's basically credited with being the first American "skyscraper". Owing its height to its interior steel skeleton structure, coupled with the invention of the elevator, both which allowed them to build higher, and would become the "standard" for going even higher. It has a visual effect similar to things only created in the digital realm today. (i.e. the tri-pod monsters of War of the Worlds, or the Dinosaurs in Jurassic Park) I get the same tingly feeling EVERY SINGLE TIME I LOOK AT THIS BUILDING. The true beauty of the building is obviously its unique shape, which allows you to imagine not only a "flat iron" (which most people probably can't truly place, because even modern electric irons don't quite look like this) but maybe a giant slice of birthday cake, or a knife carving Broadway and Fifth Avenue in half. Other little known facts include the birth of a saying, based on how the wind would whip around this narrow point of 23rd Street, and women of the day, did not want their skirts blown up to expose their ankles. Their scurrying was dubbed the "23 skidoo" Also the home of several movie sites, like the modern version of Godzilla, and the building is portrayed as Spider man's newspaper home base, the Daily Bugle in the first Spider Man movie. To sum up.... When you see it, you'll know you're seeing something unique, and most likely, you'll retain that feeling each time you see it afterward. This is such a beautiful piece of architecture! If you are in Manhattan, head on over to the Flatiron Building and just stare. The architectural design is precise in an odd way that gives it its own personality and allows it to stand out from the rest. The building is listed as a U.S. National Historic Landmark and U.S. National Register of Historic Places, as well as being one of NYC's landmark. Only issue is that you can't just pull up to it - lots of traffic and not very many parking spaces available. Try to get off at Madison Square Park or right across the street to the park you can find a small area for you to walk around on and it offers a wonderful distance from the building to take pictures. A quintessentially iconic New York landmark, this has got to be on your list to visit. One thing you don't appreciate until you see the building up close is just how beautifully constructed it is. It looks like a palazzo, built during the Renaissance, not something that's just over 110 years old. The decorative work on its exterior is beautiful. Catch it on a sunny day and it's stunning to photograph. It's definitely one of the most photographed buildings in the world. It's currently an office building, so unfortunately there's no public access to the interior. So once you've walked around it, either stroll through nearby Madison Square Park or go and check out Eataly, the Italian food market for a bite to eat. read more

Frank Loyd Wright would be proud...at least for architectural exploration. The Flatiron Building was originally called the Fuller Building and was one of the tallest buildings in NYC in 1902 when it was built. Wikipedia says it was one of the first skyscrapers of this grand city....but the 3rd in the world to have actually been built in the flatiron shape. Long story short: This building looks effing radical and the point office views in the building offer a fantastic view of the Empire State Building. I can't even imagine how expensive that real estate is. read more

Like the other review, I was expecting there to be more reviews of this place. Then again, it's only a building with interesting features. But, super-iconic! Be careful when you're taking pictures; saw so many people just going in the middle of the road to take that perfect picture. Even the bf recognized this place from the pictures I took. A lot of people on the weekend (then again, when does NY not have a lot of people?), and Madison Square is right next to it, so plenty of benches to sit and stare. read more

One of the great landmarks of the City, and a must-visit and standard photo op if you're around the 23rd street area / Madison Square Park When it was first built in 1902, it was one of the tallest buildings in the city at 20 floors high. The skylines of Manhattan is certainly very different now, but the Flatiron is still one of the more iconic buildings, especially around the Midtown area where a lot of newer construction is jostling for space with the old guard. It's just a building yes. It's a pretty darn cool looking building though. I recommend checking out to cross it off your to do list of things to see in New York. Saw this on the way back from seeing the Raging bull. It does look like it has been flattened with an iron. You have to stand across the street to really get a good photo of it.
