    Antler Creek Kennel

    Antler Creek Kennel

We have used Antler Creek twice with two different dogs for a couple hours of daycare a few years…read moreapart while kayaking the AuSable River out of Mio. We always provide health records when leaving a dog, and because we travel a lot, we always make sure our dogs have every vaccination under the sun and that they are up-to-date. The facilities at Antler Creek are what we would expect with a kennel, but sadly, both times our dog came down with bordetella after being left at the kennel. Fortunately, it was mild each time, because our dogs had been vaccinated, but they still got sick. It is possible that each time the dog got bordetella somewhere else, and it is called "kennel cough" for a reason; but it is quite a coincidence that our dog caught bordetella both times we used this kennel several years apart and the incubation period was right for the kennel to have been the source. It is a guess, but although we cannot be sure, we suspect the runs are not cleaned between "guests". The first time we left our dog for about 8 hours, and he could hardly get out of the run before he peed and pooped. Apparently he had never been let out of the indoor run the entire time he was there, and he was just expected to eliminate in the concrete floored run. Sadly, we have found nowhere else to leave our dog in the Mio area, so now when we are kayaking the AuSable, we just leave our dog with a trusted dog sitter near our home for a few days. This review is unfortunate, because we think with just a little effort, this kennel could be very nice, and it seems to be the only place to leave a dog in the Mio area.

I have been using this kennel about once a year since they opened. I called in July to make a…read morereservation to drop of my dog on Aug 8. I said that I would drop him off early. I arrived with my dog at 8am on Aug 8th. The sign in the window indicated they were OPEN. I was met in the entrance by the female owner and was given a verbal tongue lashing for being there so early. My dog, his bed and blanket, and bag of food was taken from me. She opened the first empty kennel she came to, threw in the bedding, put the dog in the cage, slammed the door shut, and threw his bag of food on the floor, and went back in her house. The kennel was dark, and she never removed my dogs collar and leash from him. After sitting in the car contemplating this, I decided to go back in and get my dog. I went back into the kennel, turned on the lights, and took my dog. This whole time, the owner never came out of her house to see what I was doing. Although I would never do this, I could have turned loose every dog in the kennel, or could have taken any one of them with me. Why were these dogs still in complete darkness and unattended at 8am? No dog should EVER be put in a cage with a collar and 6 ft long leash still on it, and in the dark no less. I will never be using this dog kennel again....ever.

Browning Haus German Shepherds - Our dog's height at 1 year old

We purchased a black and tan male German Shepherd from Browning Haus German Shepherds. At pickup (9…read moreweeks old), he weighed only 8 pounds, which is significantly underweight for that age. He also had blood in his urine and had to go on antibiotics 3 times. We were not aware at the time that this could indicate a serious issue. At his 3-month veterinary checkup, he was still only 8 pounds and was diagnosed with dwarfism. He has since been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and has very significant skin and fur issues. He is over 1 year old now and weighs 29 lbs. This was very upsetting, and we contacted the breeder. She did offer to take him back, but we chose to keep him knowing he would likely have a shorter lifespan, and the decision to return him would have been extremely difficult as we were already attached to him. His life span is estimated at 2-5 years and we want to offer him the best life possible. We instead agreed on a discount toward a future puppy. However, communication after that became confusing. Different potential replacement puppies and mothers were mentioned at different times, and it was difficult to get clear, consistent information. When it came time to move forward, the pricing also changed from what we originally discussed,, it was increased by $500.00 and we were never able to finalize a replacement puppy. We were told we would be contacted when a new litter was available, and the business owner continually failed to reach out to us, despite seeing litters on their website and a sale on AKC website. While we love our dog and appreciate that a return was offered, the experience left us feeling that communication and clarity around health expectations and replacement agreements were disappointing and inadequate. I would do research on dwarfism, especially with German Shepards. The data suggests these issues could stem from unethical breeding practices. I believe the owner knew about his genetic defect and chose to hide that information in order to make a sale.
