There seems to be a strong catholic presence in the area. There are lots of small shops throughout the area, in great variety. I really like the concept of building art, which helps to alleviate buildings that might be considered eyesores. This concept also, serves to give artist a place to showcase their talents, as well as offer representation of the cultures in the area. Really provides inspiration on many fronts. Lynn is actually on a come back Buildings are being put up roads changing schools and colleges expanding. Lynn is definitely moving in the correct direction. The city is quite large it has give zip codes. It also has a lot of protected lands/ parks/ reservation and a fabulous stretch of beautiful coast that houses its beaches. The town also has a good selection of restaurants and yacht clubs. I understand the school system is very good. This would be a great place to bring up children or for singles that love the beach.

This isn't an industrial city which means that it mainly consists of residential areas. I would live here forever if I could. Close knit communities and quiet areas means that there's a lot of peace of mind when living here. There are two major reasons why I HAVE to give it four stars instead of five. 1. There always always seems to be construction going on. Like Dan G. mentioned earlier, there is one Dunkin Donuts location that chokes up traffic all the time! Not only that, but they have been working on the bridge there now for over a year and they JUST finished ONLY half of the bridge.. which means there's halfway more to go. It is HORRIBLE in the morning to get from inside the residential areas of Winthrop towards Boston because of it... it's actually a nightmare. 2. Logan Airport. It's located RIGHT beside Winthrop and jams up cellular service. I lived in the downstairs apartment of my landlord and I get no reception whatsoever on my phone, and the internet connection is horrible. Just TRY to watch a single video on YouTube.. it's nearly impossible to finish a ten minute video because the connection is so bad. My landlord tells me that they keep a land-line in their home because their cell phone service is so bad. Beside those two crippling downsides, there's just no way I would call Winthrop "perfect" but it comes damn close.

Quite possibly the greatest parade I have ever witnessed! From the random marching bands not…read moreactually playing anything to the 'dancers' walking down Highland barefoot to the thousands of shriners in their tiny cars. AMAZING. My only complaint was the cavalcade of fire trucks and ambulances at the parade end. They were all blaring sirens and honking horns so loudly that parade attendees complained and retreated with hands over their ears.

The…read morerelief stops were perfectly spaced, the volunteers were helpful and attentive and all of the riders (especially the veteran riders) were so friendly. I can't say enough positive about this challenge. From the moment you sign up to participate you have a personal coach, training help, fundraising help...I could gush for hours. It was so awesome that I plan to do it again every year that is possible.

Things that lurk…read morein the sea. The very first lighthouse built on Ten Pound Island was back in 1821. Gloucester was a very important harbor and since the island sits right in the way of the entrance people sensibly figured a lighthouse on the little island would be a good idea. The lighthouse was cheap and poorly constructed and another light made of cast iron was completed in 1881 and still stands. About 39 feet tall it originally had a 5th order Fresnel Lens that is now in a museum up in Maine. Gloucester can be a spooky place with all kinds of storms and fog and people can see strange things in in the mist. And all kinds of odd and bizarre things have indeed been seen out by the lighthouse. The very first sea serpent sighting was back in the 1600's and so many have been seen that this is sometimes called The Sea Serpent Lighthouse. By the early 1820's sightings of the beast were so common that people use to come here just to get a look at it. Many sworn affidavits by very credible people were signed, describing the beastie in detail. The light is quieter now and very few monster sightings are recorded anymore. The famous artists Winslow Homer lived here for a while around 1880 but he apparently was more busy with his painting than looking for monsters. The lighthouse was restored in 1980 and looks almost like new. The only way to get to Ten Pound Island is by boat but it's less than a mile off shore so it's a pleasant kayak trip. Just be careful to keep an eye open for something large and bizarre that still might be lurking out there.

Pines stones but no…read moreghosts The Old Burial Ground is a very old graveyard indeed. The sign in front says 1661 and it is the oldest graveyard in the town of Manchester By-the-Sea. There are records of an older one but it is long forgotten and no longer exists. This ancient graveyard does look old, very old. Many of the gravestones are worn away and the oldest ones I could read were from the early 1700's. It's obvious that the broken and impossible to read stones are much older. The cemetery is a lovely place, lots of tall pine trees grow around, beside and even up through some of the ancient stones. It actually smells great, with the scent of pine permeating the air. One surprising fact about this ancient place is that there are no legends of ghosts or hauntings. Quite surprising since virtually all old and spooky graveyards have a least a few resident mischievous spirits hanging around. Perhaps it is just so old that even the ghosts got tired and just want to rest.
