While the digital age creates incredible challenges for new print media, Central Virginia's independently-owned Flavor Magazine is bucking the trend by producing a wonderful magazine that is both visually pleasing and incredibly informative.
Flavor's mission is to create a publication "dedicated to local food, Virginia wine, and sustainable agriculture in the Capital foodshed." And it is a mission in which they have greatly succeeded, especially for food appreciators like myself who are not only looking for the latest new restaurant to jump on the farm-to-fork trend. Sure, there is plenty of coverage of the local food and wine scene, but it is well balanced with coverage of locally produced products rangin from honey and bread to mead and fungi. Plus each issue offers well-written articles about everything from sustainable living and home gardening to debunking organic labels and great recipes made with seasonal ingredients.
Having been available for free in local retailers and restaurants for the past two years, Flavor is finally moving to subscription-based distribution this winter. Given what they have proven in the course of their first twelve issues, I'm sure I'll be amongst the first to subscribe. read more
