I prepared a collection of must-try stops during the month of my visit, and from my research, Daughter in Law made the list. It also happens to be around the corner from my hotel so it ended up being the first restaurant I tried after arriving at the hotel and getting settled. I wanted something comforting and guaranteed to be a delightful food experience and Indian food never disappoints for me and my cravings. Daughter in Law went above and beyond all expectations of the every day delicious Indian restaurant. You'll know it from first glance as you approach the restaurant and see the colorful tables and neon sign. Everything about the ambience took me back to our Mama Speaks hotel in Rome...my absolute favorite for the fantastic indulgent, maximalist, colorful decor. Everything about the space says party with a sophisticated twist. The second time we went here, there was a birthday happening for a grandma with her large family there. This place is a gem. All I can say is hopefully I get to have a birthday here someday. It was a party and we were all smiles. We ordered the Hiramasa Kingfish Ceviche You won't regret this choice It was heaven in a clamshell. I could have eaten several of these as a meal. It was a fresh as fresh gets scallop ceviche with the perfect Indian spin of flavors. I don't know how I didn't get a picture of it except to say most likely because we ate it too fast for pictures. We followed this with the Ball of Happiness (Gol Gappa). A crisp hollowed out orb served with a layered shot of the classic mint, tamarind, and chutney flavor sauces that are meant to be poured into the orb and popped into your mouth for a flavor explosion. It was fun and delicious but I personally would have gone for another scallop en croute in place of this. Though it's worth a go! For drinks, I ordered a Passionfruit Spritz. I was worried it may be too sweet but it turned out to be just right and very refreshing. The little mermaid was a fun touch and my daughter wanted to take her home. The Mango Lassi was perfect, authentic, and not too sweet. There was only 2 of us, so as much as I wanted to try the Rogan Josh, we shared the Chicken Tikka Masala instead. It was delicious phenomenal. So rich and flavorful, with a brightness and tang to it that made it hard to stop eating. Incredible flavor! The garlic naan was of course, woodfired crisp and perfectly soft where it should be when pulled apart. Daughter in Law is going to be a regular spot for the next couple of months and anytime I'm traveling here in Melbourne!

The waiters are very friendly there where it is a great place to go with a few people to share some of the delectable dishes with a BYO beer or wine. My only criticism is that the setting is very formal and when I'm not in that mood I now get the food to go and head next door to the Lyrebird Lounge, where I can sit in the courtyard on a balmy night and listen to some live music. Either way, the food is where Bala is a winner and will most definitely satisfy the curry lovers but may turn a few, just like it did with me.

We live nearby, so wanted to get to the bottom of it. It's a small, BYOW, seemingly family run Indian restaurant in an accessible but unremarkable part of town, which is good because you can find parking outside easily. Right off the bat, I just want to say, that the curries here are really yummy. Not the best in the world, and it doesn't REALLY stand out above others like Indian on High or Yarra Indian, but the curries were definitely good and above average. We had pappadums, mint/yoghurt/chutney, samosas, lamb vindaloo, and paneek butter masala, which we ate half of and finished the rest at home. Loved it. So the two stars here are 100% SOLELY for food. Now, everything else. It is expensive. About $35+ per person for a very basic meal. The lamb vindaloo was an average to below average sized portion, and it's $23.50. That is pricey. Yarra Indian does the same one for about $13.50, arguably better and they have delivery, for example. Although a lot of people were getting take away, so there may be something special about their food. However the worst most unforgivable part, hands down, is the service/dine-in experience. It is completely non-existent. I cannot stress this enough. You literally are sitting alone with NOBODY in the room in dead silence the entire time. And the back doors are all open so the place is freeeeezing. We could've just walked out at any moment and nobody would've noticed. They should shut down the restaurant. And just make the food at home as a takeout/delivery service. However we would never come back here OR order because of the prices. Here's our experience (and I'm making it detailed due to the shortage of clear reviews for this place): We walked in, and an older guy/younger girl (who were sitting palm on face in the restaurant) came and gave us wine glasses and water and then headed out back, I suppose to fire up the pots and get started (we didn't see them again until the end). We drank wine. And talked. And talked. And talked. Thank god it's BYOW because there's nothing else to do. 30min later, this oafy guy comes barging in from the street all manically. He went the counter then came to us with a pen + paper and lifted his head a bit to say "What you having?" .. straight from the street lol.. we were caught a bit off guard, but went with it. We have had Indian hundreds of times, so we asked if there was anything he could recommend. Anything. Something that perhaps they specialised at, or preferred making, or HAD already on the pot, or something. And this guy just had no opinions on anything. "Everything good. Anything. Whatever you want. Anything. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Anything." etc etc etc. These were his recommendations. Also, the menu only had like 12 curries. Beef vindaloo, for example (but not lamb/chicken/vegetarian). When we asked, he said he could make lamb vindaloo. We got excited and said "Oh great!" what else can you make that isn't on the menu. He was "everything" we said "like what? ANY examples of something?" .... nada.. so we said we needed a few minutes. Also, they have NO SALADS. No kachumber (seriously? you don't have tomatoes/onions/cucumbers?) Anyway, we eventually made our order. 30min later. Pappadums come out. On their own. And sit there for about 20min. We started to eat them on their own cuz we were so bored. Eventually I went out back to find the guy in the kitchen for condiments like chutney. And he brought those reluctantly. And everything afterwards was the same / just like pulling teeth. A tissue? 15min wait. Glass? 15min wait. We gave up eventually. Like... what is going on back there? We are slow eaters, but we were there for over 2 hours, and we probably saw the staff for about 5minutes in total. Curries took over an hour. Even paying the check I had to go out back to get the older guy and younger girl again. We wanted to just leave our phone numbers/walk out to make a point but felt bad. $70+. Seriously? After we paid the older guy and younger girl then came back into the restaurant and sat down, seemingly sweaty and stressed and tired from having had to make our food from scratch single handedly out back (I assumed!? Where else could they have been!?). We felt bad. But honestly they should just shut down the joint and work out of their houses. There's no point to have a venue really. I'd never return. There's just SO MANY better and cheaper and more fun options right down the road. But other people seemed to like their take out. So try it for yourself to see if their curry is worth twice the price as anywhere else. For us, it wasn't.

We stumbled across Massive Wieners 25 inch hotdog challenge - so we went to give it a go! The venue is easily accessible via public transport, with tram stops and Prahran train station nearby. It is a cute venue set up like an old American-style hotdog place. We found it entertaining to browse around at all the photos of people that have tried the challenge on the walls. Both staff members we dealt with on were extremely friendly, particularly the owner. He was very sociable and made the whole experience better. They also have vegetarian/vegan options so everyone can have a try! The hotdog really was HUGE! We thought it was pretty great value, as it was only $15.00 - with the allowance of two condiments and unlimited water. The hotdog was really tasty, and had a really nice flavour. There was a very generous amount of sauce, which is definitely needed to complete the challenge successfully! The bun was nice too, but unfortunately both of us succumb to the sheer size of the hotdog - meaning we landed a spot on the 'Did not finish' wall.
