And as I expected, the butter chicken packet blew me away, it was full of flavour, it was absolutely fantastic. It wasn't chunky or bulky. To make things even better it helped out the side dishes that came along with it, such as the Crackers and Naan Bread, as I dipped both of those into the Butter Chicken Sauce as well. The Samosa wasnt really for me, I havnt really warmed up to such a unique type of food. It wasnt bad, just didnt stand out, wasnt impressive but a tad bland. The qauntity of the rice was very impressive, I got heaps in that packet. I was picking at it for ages throughout the movie. It was nice, it was good. Perhaps I should of mixed some sauce into it to spice it up and give it the edge. That would of been a good idea on my part. As previously stated the Butter Chicken Packet was epic and I liked having alot of smaller side dishes to go through. It was a great takeaway experience. And worthy of giving 4 stars. The shop front is a dollop of bright primary school colours tucked amongst the car dealerships and pawn shops of the less dense, North Melbourne end of Elizabeth St. In contrast, the inside is your typical sparse and oh-so-slightly cramped budget décor, but the customers tend to take care of the atmosphere with amiable chat and snippets of laughter. Food is served in traditional copper and other metallic serving pots on tables with easily cleanable tablecloths. The curries are made without a hint of stinginess, with full flavoured ingredients that are never overcooked. The highlights are some of your curry staples; the Vindaloo (lamb or chicken), Prawn Massala and Shahi Paneer (cheese is a creamy tomato sauce). The most expensive dish is a mere $12, and the naan bread is extra soft. Classic Curry Company is an almost obligatory experience for every Melbourne University student, but you could say the same for everybody else as well. We are only in Melbourne over the holidays, so while I unpacked at our local Airbnb, hubby bought us two Chicken Tikka Masalas (1 hot & 1 Extra hot) from Indian Star. They weren't quite what we were used to (being that we're from the states) but OH MY WORD were they ever good! They truly were delicious from the first bite to the last and there was so much food that we decided we had enough for leftovers two more times which was definitely fine by us. :) The Naan was a good size and the Raita was superb. We both agreed it was easy to see why they have won awards for their culinary skills. Hubby also said the gentleman who was there (not sure if he was the owner) was very kind and a lovely person and gave him great service. Definitely recommend! :)

Everything we order is always fresh and delivered hot! The dishes that really shine are their garlic naans, which smell and taste amazing. The butter chickens are exceptional; the chicken is always very tender and so flavourful. The samosas are crisp and fresh, and their tandoori chicken is so, so good. Aangan tries to do it all with an extensive menu featuring street style food "chaat", indo-Chinese food, South Indian masala dosas, goan fish curry, lots of veggie North Indian options and meat curries with choice of lamb, goat or chicken. Their beverage menu is equally extensive with various types of lassi. The typical salted, sweet and mango lassis are found on the menu but you can additionally order their mixed masala lassi, mixed fruit lassi and even jaljeera. The restaurant has an extensive wine and spirits list too. Portion sizes are large for the price you pay. Aangan means courtyard and though you enter a large enclosed restaurant there is also an attached courtyard with long tables that may be used to host functions. We ordered the chaat platter with our choice of three chaats. We got the samosa, papdi and aloo tikki chaat. The aloo tikki was the most delicious out of the three. Tender potato patty with a smoky flavour in a creamy yoghurt, tamarind and coriander chutney sauce with sliced onion, tomatoes and boiled chickpeas. The samosa filling was above average but not amazing. Papdi chaat could do with a kick to it. The goat madras curry now was one of the best curries I've had. Didn't taste like pataks. Not creamy or buttery sauce. Just a really thick masala sauce with tender pieces of goat and strong but not overpowering fllavours of mustard. The thick garlic naan was equally delicious. We couldn't have enough. Even though I was full I had to get to the bottom of the copper bowl holding the curry. I tried the masala lassi (arrived in a massive mason jar) which was as expected savoury and requires a palette that is acclimatized to drinking masala in yoghurt. The mango lassi was nice but sickly sweet. The dessert options include various flavours of kulfi, gulab jamun, carrot halwa and faluda. The faluda had a strong almost pungent flavour of rose syrup. And it was hard to finish. Should have been served in a sundae glass with a fork as the noodles were slippery. The service is polite, quick and attentive. Make a booking as the place got very full very quickly even on a public holiday. Patrons included both Indians and non Indians. They do lunch take away curry specials for 10 bucks. though some menu items can be worked on - I really enjoyed the food and service.
