Came to the SF/Oakland area to shop for fountain pens, and my experience here was absolutely amazing! They had a great selection, and TJ was extremely helpful in helping me find what I wanted. TJ was super knowledgeable and took the time to talk with me about the different pen brands. Left with a few platinum preppy's and my first TWSBI. Price was also fairly reasonable. Highly recommend!!

A whole shelf of inks! There is also a binder, that have pages of inks swatches

Quick Summary: - Parking might be difficult to find because there is only sidewalks - Close to the BART station (12th street); pretty safe walking environment - Best art supply ever? I agree to this 100% - Wide selection of art supplies - Great selection of pen and inks too, there is a journaling section - Attentive and resourceful staff - Flax member, point collecting style I recently purchased a fountain pen and vaguely thought of looking for ink. We planned to visit Oakland for food eats and exploration, but a thought crossed my mind: is there an art store? I used Google and there it was, very close to the BART station. I saw some of the photos, and I noticed there was a corner for pens. That grabbed my interest, so there I went. I have been to different art supply stores and most carry a similar variety: paint, pencils, photo frames, watercolor paper and pigment, papers, brushes, etc. This also had an extra variety of goods: unique markers like Posca (of course Copic was there too), tons of watercolor brands, a corner for children crafting, letter writing. The biggest surprise was the journaling section!! I repeat, a journaling section! Paper supplies for writing letters, traveling notebooks, bullet, line, and blank journals were there to choose. I was beyond shocked, when I discovered there was a section for inks! Ferris Wheel Press, Sailor brands, Diamine, Pelican, Noodler's, there were all there! The staff also supplied a binder, that contains all the inks swatches of their inventory! I was just wondering a day ago, on whether the swatches seen online with digitally printed/scanned images are true to the eye, and I had wished to see the ink swatches in person. This store granted my wish ,and I got to compare the inks with my naked eye. It was the best experience ever. Truly, the best art supply store ever, and I would definitely return to buy new inks.

This place is 5 stars in customer service! When you walk in, you feel like you're in a small town's art supply store. Everyone is super happy to help, super happy to accommodate, and totally in tuned with their customers. I'm not an artist; more of a crafter. This place seems to carry a lot of great supplies that for the most part I don't use, but man if they did, I'd be here ALL the time. Wish they carried vinyl, paper, and the like. We picked up a cute journal for a gift and one of the employees even helped us affix a tag onto the cover for my daughter.

My husband and I became aware that they had a presence in Oakland, when we saw their table at the Book Faire in Oakland at Frank Ogawa Plaza some years ago. At that time, they had taken over the space previously occupied by Blicks on College Ave, across from California College of the Arts. My hubby is an artist, and was very excited by this. I'd never been. I don't know why we were coming by this location, but it's a nice one. They have a lot of supplies, so I walked around and snapped pictures inside and outside, as he perused the aisles looking for goodies. I saw that they have an art space for artists. The space also isn't jam packed with materials. It's possible to walk around leisurely, something that is hard to do in some stores. I realized that they have a good use of space for their items and that walking through - two people can fit in an aisle comfortably. At the old Blicks at the bottom of University Ave, I often waited in the car because the store was cramped. I didn't want to be in there. Here, I felt like I could relax and not take up too much space. It also meant that I felt like I could take my time. Which is what we did and when we left, I had a list of things I wanted to come back for. I'm glad that at a time when we saw the closure of so many good, independent art supply stores that they are still around and doing their thing in a space that feels comfortable. The only issue is parking. Getting to the parking lot, with all of the one way streets took a try, but they don't lose a star for that. The app on my phone that gave me directions does, however, lol. But bottom line, go to Flax, enjoy the environment and fantastic staff (very nice people) and support a wonderful local arts store.

I should mention, I am in no way affiliated with this shop whatsoever in any way, shape, or form. However I do live in the neighborhood and when I was searching for paper stores, this shop came up in the search. It took me literally 2 seconds to see that it's not the type of store I'm looking for (I'm looking for more of a stationary/paper store as opposed to art supply anyways, but alas this shop came up.) I personally think it's really cool to have a shop specifically for materials more geared toward graffiti/spray paint art...because graffiti IS ART. Therefore this shop IS an art supply store! That guys review would be almost like if I went to Whole Foods and got mad because they don't sell Hot Cheetos and Swishers. That would be ridiculous, right? Of course it would be! People should do their own due diligence! I'm sure Scott S. refuses to take such responsibility though, for he mustn't have the basic sense to make such high agency decisions in his day-to-day life. But that's okay. Because I'm here. To suggest to anyone that comes across this shop, to simply look at the images. Look for yourself. Is this the type of store you're looking for? If you are unsure, the store owner's phone number is right here on this very listing. I'm sure you can call and ask. Don't be like Scott. Not now. Not ever.

Note that it was raining at the time. This was extremely unprofessional, and we left without purchasing any items and will not be returning. I would have been a paying paying customer and there is no reason unless it was out of service that I should Not have been allowed to use the restroom that is designated for customers. They even had the restroom area barricaded so you could not get to it.
