Large Law Enforcement Rescue Operation results in the seizure of 86 animals in Custer County Colorado. On Monday, February 24, Custer County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a large commercial kennel in Custer County to execute a court ordered search warrant. The kennel is being operated under a "special use permit" issued by Custer County Government. Deputies initially received a citizen complaint on February 13 regarding this facility. During the subsequent investigation probable cause was identified leading to a judge issuing a search warrant. Custer SO Deputies Evan Johnson and David Binkowski worked the investigation as a team and to plan the operation with special assistance from the Colorado Department of Agriculture. CCSO Evidence Technician Erin McCarthy also assisted in pre planning and obtaining live stock trailers from local ranchers to use to transport the large animals. Two veterinarians and one veterinary technician were brought to the facility to examine every animal on the grounds and in the facility. Following these examinations, the following at risk animals were seized and transported to care facilities around the region: - 77 Dogs - 2 Horses - 1 Donkey - 3 Hens - 3 Cats A total of 24 responders participated in the rescue and investigation. We are grateful for their support in helping this operation be conducted in a safe and effective manner. These agencies will also be assisting with housing the animals. The assisting organizations are: - National Mill Dog Rescue - 11 Judicial District Attorney's Office - Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) - CDA Division of Animal Welfare - Park County Sheriff's Office Animal Control - Colorado Brand Inspector - Custer County SO deputies - Custer EMS - Bureau of Land Management - Custer County Planning and Zoning Office After working all day at the incident scene, the deputies worked into the evening cleaning their vehicles, trailers and uniforms to prevent the spread of sickness and disease. The investigation is ongoing and our report will be presented to the 11th Judicial District Attorney's Office for formal charging. As no charges have been filed, we are not naming the kennel or owners/operators at this time. We ask that you do the same. They are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court. Horrible things happened here. So. Much. Death. So little love for the animals from the owners. They were nothing but merchandise.

To start I got my cream colored girl from this kennel and I really love her. The whole experience was great. I had prepaided for her and for her AKC registration. When I left the kennel I was told that I would be mailed my AKC registration. That was in July 2023. I never recieved the AKC registration. I called and emailed a few times until November of 2024 when I decided that I had to be persistant. Since then. I have called and emailed frequently. I have heard from her kennel staff that she has had a family emergency, but she is the only one that can take care of AKC registration. All of AKC is done on the AKC website or by phone, so there is no reason this could not have been taken care of. The real problem is that they have had a year and half to send me my documents that I have paid for. The problem here is you have to prepay and hope you get what you paid for. read more

I bought a puppy from there in about '18. She just passed last year. During the whole time I had her, I felt bad for giving Flickennel the $$. You pick up a puppy there, and it feels like you're "rescuing" the dog from being in that horrid place - but on the other hand, there is guilt from perpetuating their business by giving them any business. It's an ugly situation. One thing to think about - look how far they are from a vet. It may sound close in miles, but until you've driven there, you realize that's another irresponsible thing - they couldn't get a dog to emergency if they had to. I loved my Lucy... but the day I went there, truly, she was the oldest puppy there and not what I was looking for - but I felt so sorry for her. I held her and knew she just needed to get out of there, so I bought her. Got her home, and the first time she went outside to poop, she immediately turned around to eat it. You figure out what that means! *******Don't even go there.... places like this need to go bankrupt.****** Adopt.... don't shop. Stay away from puppy mills like this. I'm not going to post a picture of my beloved girl. It's not about the dog, it's about this place! Update February 19 2020: Today I was re organizing my dogs binder and found on my records the registration to one of the females I purchased from this breeder. I decided to take a closer look at the pedigree and found out how she inbred extremely closely to produce the litter. This dog died from a congenital heart condition 3 years ago. This was not the only litter she produced with this same sire and dam. I will highly suggest everyone to ask for copy of pedigree of parents before purchasing from this breeder. Genetic testing I have done on dogs I purchased from this breeder has shown that she produces dogs with PRA and I have testing on the dogs I purchased from her to prove it. read more

I too was surprised at all the dogs at this site. We felt bad, but already paid and the moment we saw him, we feel in love. Make no mistake, we love our dog from Flick Kennel. BUT, he is not a mini, like we paid for. We don't care because we are not breeding him. BUT he is not what was advertised. We would never part with him now. He is a healthy dog, sorta protective aggressive and we have to be cautious with him when meeting new people. We bought another mini and did not use Flick Kennel. The new breeder had us in her home and had a very clean and organized set up. Our newer mini is a mini and we even paid less. read more

I went back to pick up my pup a week after visiting. I had so much fear during the entire process due to peoples reviews but I think my puppy was well taken care of here and had a clean bill of health. She was obviously socialized as her personality is incredible and nothing scares this cutie. Janet the breeder is not in the best health but she cares for these puppies. While a lot of dogs are here I saw them all and this was not a puppy mill in any way. She gave me her 8 week vaccination and we were on our way. My only complaints which are very minor are this: They feed dogs Purina Puppy Chow. This stuff is GOD AWFUL dog food!!! Please watch the documentary Pet Fooled. I put her on a raw food diet the day we got home and she's done wonderfully, puppy chow went in the trash. She gives a 6 week vaccination which vets no longer recognize so they redo which is unnecessary on the pup. Not sure if she will allow this first one to be skipped but you can ask. She's been doing this a long time so it's just lack of new information. Dogs should get that vaccination at 8, 12, and 16 weeks and the vet will still make you get the 16 week even though she gives you proof of vaccination. Our puppy gets so many compliments and her temperament is amazing. These dogs are cared for and healthy, all puppies no matter how raised have health risks but I would feel very comfortable here. If you want somewhere fancier, be prepared to pay $2000+ for a dachshund, here you get a quality well cared for puppy for $700-$800. read more

Janet is a rude person to deal with and a crook! I was interested in a particular puppy. I gave her $250 deposit upfront. At first she claimed she never received it. Unfortunately the pup died. Janet kept trying to push other puppies for me to buy. I finally decided to adopt a retired female. She then raises the price $100 more, which I agreed to. Whenever I asked a simple question about the dog's age her replies would be rude and she would not provide the information. Emails went back and forth, and she finally gave me the dog's age. At that time I decided I didn't want to do business with this type of person and requested my money back. She kept my money saying some BS about her policy. Stay clear of this shady lady! read more

I adopted a 7 year old dachshund from this place. When we came to pick her up, it was a shock to see how filthy it was inside. The dogs bark nonstop, and you aren't allowed to go in the back where they are kept. The website advertises that the dogs are socialized, and have no behavioral issues. When we brought our Lily home, she was absolutely filthy, and when I bathed her, the bathwater was black. Who knows when the last time she was cleaned. Also, she was absolutely terrified and hid under the couch for two weeks. She still gets very nervous around strangers, to the point where she is shaking. This poor dog is terrified of men, and obviously had lived her whole life in this mill, because everything scares her. I cannot imagine what kind of hellish life she had before I adopted her, and it makes me sick. The dogs there are only fed Purina dog chow covered in diatamacious earth powder, so we changed her food to a better brand. It's obvious she wasn't fed enough because she still scarfs food like she's going to starve. I'm so glad I saved her from this place, and from all the other reviews on Google, I dont know how this place is still open. Those poor dogs are just used to breed and once they can't produce any more puppies, completely discarded. read more

Something is not right with Flickennel. I brought home our male mini dachshund in May of 2013, a puppy of Taffy and Rambo. I thought I had done diligent research around Janet and her business to ensure that not only would we be getting a healthy, happy dog, but that she was also a reputable breeder and taking the utmost care of her dachshunds. With no reviews to be found about her facility, rave reviews on her testimonial page and her AKC license, I thought we were safe. Wrong. Red Flag 1: Our pup was only 10 months old in his first episode of IVDD. To quote DodgersList.com (a great resource), "IVDD is a disease and not an injury. The trauma to the spinal cord results from hardening of the discs due to the disease. IVDD causes discs to age earlier in life. Discs lose moisture and harden and can no longer cushion the vertebrae along the spine. IVDD occurs in breeds such as dachshunds, poodles, corgis, beagles, but it is not limited to just those breeds. If a dog has IVDD, a disc problem can happen at any age. When the disc has weakened to a certain degree, it will herniate. You may or may not be able to pinpoint a specific incident as causing the start of symptoms. Many dogs that have IVDD have their first episode typically between the ages of 3-7. Disc disease may be an ongoing, progressive disease for the rest of the dog's life. Some dogs have only one episode others have multiple episodes over their life time." To summarize, IVDD is a genetic disease. On Janet's website, she clearly states, "We're often asked if our dachshunds have back troubles, and the answer is a resounding NO!!! Our goal is to breed-out any and all weaknesses inherent in dachshunds and only to improve the breed. We don't keep "duds" in our breeding program - any that don't pan out, that produce defective puppies, or need to be retired for whatever reason, are found excellent permanent homes." When I contacted Janet to tell her about our pup's diagnosis, she said she doesn't know what IVDD is. With almost 40 years of dachshund experience under her belt, I find this incredibly hard to believe. Furthermore, at the time I contacted her, she was breeding Taffy and Rambo (our dog's parents) for the second time in the same year. I suggested she remove them from their breeding services as our dog has gotten IVDD from one if not both of the parents and she never replied. This condition has already cost us close to $6,000. In the purchase agreement, Janet offers a full year warranty in which you can return a dog with a congenital defect for another one. This is preposterous! Any dachshund lover can tell you that they are in love with THEIR dog specifically. He is not an interchangeable object. Additionally, even if we were heartless enough to return our boy, why would we ever trust her to give us a healthy one? At age two, he developed cataracts. TWO YEARS OLD! 2: Janet pretends to have an email assistant in New York by the name of Becky. At this point in time, I no longer believe Becky is a real person, though I communicated with her by email various times in the process of picking up our dog. I think Becky is a persona for Janet to hide behind so she can feign ignorance whenever it's convenient. If I'm wrong, I welcome Becky to reply here or email me her NY phone number. 3: Janet charged us for a "blue and tan" dog even though our dog is clearly chocolate and tan. Picking him up at eight weeks, she claimed he was still, "just that funny color," as though the blue just hadn't shown up yet. She wanted to sell him for the higher price. 4: We brought our puppy home in May and it took until early December to receive his AKC papers. When they arrived, the sire's name was not the actual name of his father. I have every reason to believe that Janet had to wait to find a paper that she could pretend was for us. When I contacted her repeatedly over the summer to get the papers, she had an excuse every time; she was busy, she had double pneumonia, etc. I'm not without sympathy but business is business and I had already paid. 5. No one is allowed past the front door and the tiny room you pick your dog up in REEKS of stale urine. If her facility is so licensed and legitimate, what is she hiding? She repeatedly claims that she's protecting her dogs from the germs that can arrive on human guests but makes no exception for rubber covers for shoes, flu masks, etc. I don't buy it. After finding a woman who used to know her online and seeing photos, I know that these pups are kept in cruel, filthy conditions. Her website touts an adamant hatred of puppy mills but her facility IS ONE. I would strongly advise anyone looking to get a purebred dachshund to do more homework and find their forever pup elsewhere. It seems that Janet does not have the financial means to care for the sheer amount of dachshunds under her care and she over-breeds the dams to pay off her bills. So, after losing a Dachshund at 14 years, we waited two years to add another to our family. After combing the internet, we found Janet's website. Everything looked good, we put down our deposit and picked up our puppy at the appointed time. Two days after she came home, she came down with horrid bloody loose stools. We took her to the vet for her puppy wellness check, only to find out that she was loaded with parasites. $400, and several weeks later, she was on the upswing. When we purchased the puppy, we paid extra for her full AKC registration papers. I contacted Janet 90 days after the point of purchase to inquire about her papers, and was told that she had not got around to registering the litter yet...Ok, but when I asked when this might occur, I was given a song and dance about her health, her anniversary, bad weather...etc. Long story short, it took SIX MONTHS to get papers on this puppy. My husband and I raise horses. I can have registration papers on a horse in eight weeks...tops. Six months is out of the realm of possibility. It was not until I threatened legal action that I got papers. Bottom line? She's a lousy businesswoman with shady ethics and poor customer service skills. Avoid this place like the plague!!! read more

I got Willy from Flickennel back in June 2017. I have had no issues with him since. He has been to the vet a handful of times for routine puppy shots and deworming and he is absolutely healthy. Janet quickly responded to my e-mail inquiry about puppies after my beloved doxie was killed and she thought Willy would be a good fit for us and he is. He is happy, healthy, full of curiosity and gumption and gets along with all dogs. I don't understand the issues people have been having, especially with color or coat, which Janet explicitly states in her contract that she does not guarantee. We thought Willy would have been a smooth coat, but he ended up being a wire coat and I love him all the more for it. She does not run a puppy mill, explained her breeding program to me, and I even got to meet Willy's mom and dad, who were both the sweetest dogs. Does it smell? No more than any other place where animals are housed, but it is very clean. The dogs do get to go outside in their runs to play, dogs get dirty, it happens. When I picked Willy up, they had given him a bath. Janet also has separate washers and driers and a sink area that are designated for her kennel use only. What also appreciated is that she was able to keep Willy an extra 10 days for us with no issues and has a military discount. Janet does seem to have some health troubles, but there is no doubt in my mind that those dogs are loved and cared for. I do agree with another person's statement about feeding Purina products, but I changed Willy's food as soon as he was in my possession, no big deal. I was not going to register him at first, but as we are keeping him intact due to his incredible good looks and personality, we decided on breeding him in the future and want to register him. read more

Make no mistake - this kennel is a puppy mill in disguise. It may not have been this way in the past, but my experience leaves no doubt about the current state of this business. From the start we had nothing but problems with this breeder as we tried purchasing what was to be our first puppy, until it died and we were refused a refund. A few days after we put a deposit down for our pup, we noticed on the website that one of the puppies in that litter died. When I sent a concerned email, I was reassured that sometimes this happens but not to worry, our pup is fine and the issue was resolved so that it wouldn't happen again. More than two weeks passed with zero updates or communication, so I emailed again asking for new 5-week pictures and a general update on our pup. The owner replied that there are no pictures to provide, because at least two weeks prior every dog from our litter died and she decided not to tell us. All four puppies from the litter were trampled to death by their mother. Apparently there is so much chaos with the multitude of families in one nursery room that anxious mothers stomp around their tiny enclosures and kill their babies. We then checked back on the website to see that 10 puppies and one mother had died just in the few weeks since we placed our deposit. (Until we protested, the website used to indicate which dogs had died. Now they just delete them, but we have screenshots showing the 10 deaths that we counted within a few weeks.) This provides a glimpse into the abhorrent conditions at this kennel, where healthy puppies routinely die because they are bred at a greater volume than can be cared for. You have to wonder how there is so little space and supervision for this to continually happen. The owner takes objection to the loaded term "puppy mill", but I don't know how else to define a place that cares more about cranking out dogs for revenue than providing a safe, healthy environment. These dogs need help! After breaking the news that our dog was killed, the owner suggested another puppy that couldn't be more different than the one we originally picked. We're not interested in some other puppy, because the unique coat from our litter was the only reason we chose a Flickennel dog over other breeders. All we wanted at this point was our deposit returned now that the dog that we reserved was dead, but the owner insisted that she kept the payment whether we transfer it to another dog or not. Needless to say I want nothing to do with this kennel at this point and am not giving them another dollar. When a breeder can't keep the puppies alive or communicate with their customers, they aren't running a viable business. The owner is perfectly fine with keeping money when she killed the "product" that a customer pays for. This is a scam - when a transaction cannot be completed as originally agreed, that transaction is null and void. She hides behind the contract on her website that mentions a strict no-refund policy if the buyer changes their mind, but obviously I didn't change my mind. The puppy died, and it wasn't my fault. Regardless, I NEVER signed anything with my deposit and have not provided any legal consent to this contract. We did eventually win a credit card charge back from Visa, but the breeder fought the whole way. Be warned - apparently PayPal does not have any protection for buyers involving a living animal. You may as well be mailing cash and hoping for the best. Please consider carefully before buying a dog from Flickennel - you're getting involved with a stressful situation before hopefully getting a puppy that survives. An unethical business like this should not be supported, and it gives a bad name to the good breeders out there. read more

I have two dogs from here and my daughter has a retired momma dog. I would like to reassure C.F. that there really is a Becky who worked for Janet at the time we got our first dog in 2000. She lived locally but a few years later moved to New York and kept up with the web site for Janet. Our dogs have been great. One had some parasites but that isn't unheard of, especially considering the mountain location. I felt like the records were well kept and we got a complete family history for the adult dog my daughter got and that dog is the sweetest thing. She loves everyone. It took her awhile to adjust to not being in the kennel where she had been her whole life. She has been such a joy. As have my two. I am only speaking for my own experience which is not to deny anyone else's experience or observations. read more
