I adopted my dog from this kennel 9.5 years ago from the Sirius and Mickee. litter born in 2005 after graduating high school I didn't know much of the breed but wanted a harlequin since seeing the movie the ugly dachshund. I found Penrose Kennels and saw they had a harl mantle litter and fell in love with harl boy #2. There contract is like any other contract I have read and signed for all my dogs that I have gotten from other breeders like my standard poodle, giant schnauzer and my other great danes. They have to be altered at certain ages, fed a certain type of food cannot be bred and have to be given back to the breeder if you cannot keep them etc. I live in California so Brutus had to be flown and everything went great Terri and Bobby were great with any questions I had and concerns. Brutus has the sweetest temperament I could dream of never destructive, potty trained within days, great with other animals no aggression at all, and has always been very healthy. Now that he is 9.5 years his hips are giving out on him and has a harder time getting around but still every now and then he runs around like a puppy again. read more

We are so blessed to have gotten the puppy we did from Penrose, but I am less than pleased about how they handled a specific situation about TWO puppies in the same litter from Milo and Sundae being diagnosed with Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy (HOD). As a parent of a Great Dane that was suffering from HOD and 4 different vets did not have answers, I was desperate to find an answer. Terri was great at responding to emails and asking for updates but then she suggested that it was our fault and began defending Penrose Kennel breeding. When asked if they would be breeding the parents again, solo or together, the question was disregarded and again she got defensive. Although it cannot be proven that HOD is hereditary, many responsible breeders recommend NOT breeding a dog that has a history of HOD which is why I asked if they would be breeding the parents again (And they have). Keep in mind that my opinion on breeding Sundae and/or Milo again is just that- an opinion. I know many people that have had great success in getting a solid dane from Penrose, but keep in mind that just because it's coming from a breeder doesn't mean there won't be major health issues! In a summary, we LOVE our beautiful dane we got from Penrose, but I don't feel like they are as responsible as they could be. read more

We adopted our Dane 'Tyr' at the end of '16. He was the third puppy in a litter from Thumper and Zephyr (July 16 litter). We were Garunteed a heathy purebred pup. He has since been diagnosed with Wobblers syndrome (Cervical spondylomyelopathy). The vet says he may not live another year. read more

I went to the kennels to pick up my sister's dogs. I was met promptly in the driveway before I even had the chance to get out of my truck. When I told the owner what I was there for, I was escorted into the office to pick up the dogs bedding and toys. I noticed that the floor was clean and that the "kennel odor" was not present. The man gave me a hand with the dogs and even gave me directions how best to get back into town. Yes, the kennels are a bit out of the way, but from what I saw, the trip is worth it. read more

Nearly 10 years ago a couple roommates and I adopted Ava and Lucy from Penrose, and they have been great dogs. Over the years, here and there, we have kept in contact with the owners and they have always been very polite and forth coming. We chose Penrose after driving two hours southwest from Denver and meeting with Terri and her husband and to see their setup first hand. During the meeting, it was evident to my roommates and I that Terry and her husband were truly devoted to their Danes, and that went a long way with me. But short of all that, Lucy and Ava have been great and the healthiest dogs I have had the pleasure of adding to the family (coming from a background of English Bulldog and Labs). Terri and her husband specifically laid out strict requirements as to the type, and mixture of food the Danes were to be on, until they were around two years old. We followed their advice and recommended eating regiment, and never had any issues with our Danes. I couldn't have asked for two better dogs (each from a different litter), so I would recommend Penrose to anyone serious about getting a Great Dane. read more

The dogs are absolutely beautiful! They have very sweet personalities. That is why I gave them 2 stars. We got our beautiful boy in April of 2019. The contract was pretty standard, which you are expected to follow to the letter and those that don't get shamed on their website and Facebook page. It states that once your dog is fixed you need to send them proof and they will send in the in paperwork to get their AKC papers. After following the contract down to the letter including feeding him the food the tell you to feed them. We had him fixed in December of 2019. I then sent the paperwork to Terri and nothing. I emailed her 9 months later and was met with excuses as to why she hasn't gotten this done. I gave her the benefit of the doubt and another 9 months go by. I sent another email again more excuses about how this year had been rough on her family but she would get it done. I again give her the benefit of the doubt because Covid has been hard on many. But here we are almost a year after my second email and I still don't have his paperwork. This horribly rough year has not stopped them from selling many more puppies. I am not the only one that has had this problem with them. If you want a beautiful dog that you can't get paperwork for this is your place. read more

Back in April I lost my big boy Cash (Great Dane) to bone cancer at 5 years old, I was devastated to say the least, my husband insisted on getting me another dane asap so we flew to Colorado for Bear and drove him 12 hours back home. We couldn't have asked for a better puppy We were greeted by Bobby, he took us all around to meet everyone of the adult dogs before we even saw the puppy. I loved how each and everyone of them were so lovable and all knew Bobby when he walked up to them, they got so excited. He knew every name and who their pups were, it was amazing. We have the best pup ever, Bear is the most lovable dog with the best temperament and outgoing personality. He makes us laugh everyday with his antics. They take unbelievable care for there dogs. We adopted our Male Mantle, and with 2 kids (4yr old & 1yr old) we couldnt have asked for better pup. This place is a puppymill, regardless of how they try to present themselves. I really cannot believe there aren't any other mentions of this out there. My first warning sign was when I first contacted them. I wanted to know basic health information about the puppy's family lines, make sure the parents didn't have genetic defects, and was met with defensive responses of "we are responsible breeders" and "our dogs have long lifespans" without answering my question. They seemed offended by my even asking a pretty standard breeding question. At this point I really should have listened to my gut instinct and walked away, but, I really wanted a Great Dane. The day came to pick up the puppy, and I was SHOCKED and the conditions their dogs live in. Appalled, really. When you drive up, it's down a long dirt road of trailer houses. They are the last house, and are building a new home that is graying particle board. They are living in an RV. They had a Doberman barking out front from a pinned in area, with signs warning that you are on camera. Bobby came out, walked right past us in a huff, not saying hello. The husband came out and took us to see the puppy's parents. This was where it got icky. There were dozens and dozens of adult danes in pens. They were in pairs: male mantles with female mantles, male fawns with female fawns, etc, I assume for breeding purposes. They were on dirt runs held in with chain linked fencing. And the dogs were absolutely desperate for attention. When we walked back, they were standing on their hind legs, barking loudly, trying to get anyone to stop and pet them. It was deafening. I am not exaggerating when I say there had to be at least 30 Danes back there. I took a photo that shows some of it (attached). From the way they present themselves, you think they only have two or three dogs, and that the dogs are pets. They say how much they love the breed - but if they really loved the breed, they would never reduce these poor animals to nothing but breeding machines. Make no mistake, the conditions are terrible and it is a puppy mill. It's heartbreaking. I really hesitated about taking the puppy home. My choices were to forfeit a $600 deposit and walk away, or pay the remainder and rescue a poor puppy from this horrible place and from a life of ending up as a breeding dog if they didn't find another buyer. We took the puppy home. Also, just FYI, they microchip the puppies themselves. So if you ever need to rehome it for any reason, they will know and will post your name, home address, and photographs on their website under "Most Wanted". Insane! This really creeped me out. I would never, ever make the decision again to fund this business. Ever. These animals are neglected and dirty and lonely. It breaks my heart. Please, don't buy from them. read more

I adopted a 12 week old blue baby girl from Penrose Kennels. She is a great addition to my family and we love her so much! When I first met my girl, who we have named Cyan, the breeders had told me that they had taken her to the vet multiple times for her front left leg for x-rays due to a growth problem but assured me nothing was wrong with her. About a month after we took our baby home with us she woke up one morning unable and refusing to walk, we noticed her front left knuckle was swollen and took her to the vet immediately. After x-rays and blood work our vet was unsure of what caused the issue and we were sent home with steroids and pain meds. After running the course with the steroids the same thing occured and we were referred to an orthopedic specialist in Co Springs. He diagnosed my baby with HOD and a radiologist in CA confirmed the diagnosis and also diagnosed her with Pano, both being bone diseases. We are getting ready to do surgery to repair the front left leg... on my 6 month old puppy. I informed the breeder of the situation and they accused me of causing the two diseases... they said that I had been feeding her the wrong food... mind you my vets are the ones who took her off the food the breeder had her on and put her on her new food. THIS BREEDER REFUSES TO RELEASE HER PUPPY X-RAYS TO ME TO HAVE THEM REVIEWED AND MAINTAINS THAT I AM AT FAULT. I am so disgusted by the dishonesty and the unprofessional way that this situation has been handled. The only good thing that has come out of this terrible situation is that I can ensure my girl is taken care of properly and will have an amazing forever home with me. I have had 4 great danes in the last 11 yrs, needless to say there is no other breed for me! Two of my danes 3 yr old Layla and 3 month old Leo are both from Penrose. Without a doubt I can say these danes are bred beautifully! They both have calm yet playful temperments, easily trainable, and beyond loving with big beautiful bodies. Absolutely no health issues as of now. Terri is very passionate about her babies. I have communicated with her several times as the puppies were being shipped out of state. Terri wanted phone calls as soon as the puppies arrived and wanted to know if they did ok with the travelling. Both of my dogs arrived healthy, clean and big! I have reccommended Penrose Danes to many people who have expressed interest in the Dane breed. We adopted a baby girl from Penrose seven years ago. She is a beautiful, healthy dog. The kennels are clean, and obviously very professionally managed. The Penrose owners are incredibly knowledgeable about these gentle giants. They have been very supportive and eager to get updates on how our girl "Pink" is doing along the way. They host a reunion every summer for their babies. Owning a giant breed comes with its unique challenges, but it's worth it to own a well-bred, beautiful giant. My husband and I took home our baby blue, Castle in September of 2016. He was a welcomed addition to our family. We chose Penrose because my husband had previously gotten a Dane from them. Castle was always a big, clumsy goof. He brought a good bit of laughter to the house. Earlier this year we noticed that his joints on his legs began to swell. He walked and stood funny. He got up from his bed a bit awkwardly. He started to eat less and was lethargic. He looked and in fact was in fact too thin for a dog of his size. We took him to the vet. They noticed his teeth were in poor condition for his age. They did blood work and nothing came up. They could not provide answers. We took him to a specialist where he was tested for numerous issues including Addison's Disease. The specialist noted that his growth was stunted and questioned the breeder's decision to put him on adult food so early. She sent us home with the adult food when he was 9 weeks old. We ended up with supplements and a prescription food from the vet. He did well for a very short time. But his health started to decline further. He struggled more and more to get up and his legs seemed to freeze. Finally on November 30 he collapsed. We stayed up all night with him. He at one point seemed to be making some progress. He ate, was happy to see us but he eventually stopped walking. On December 1, Castle was gone. We made the most agonizing decision any pet family has to make. Castle was all of 16 months old. It is likely that he had HOD. I note other reviews had dogs from this breeder who also had HOD. As I previously said, my husband had previously had a Dane from this breeder several years ago. It would seem that the breeding standards have changed dramatically and not for the better. When we picked up Castle we were shocked at the number of dogs and pens and general condition. We took Castle home thinking that at least we were providing him a future. Please do not entertain getting a dog from here. read more

We bought our Brodie in 2008 from this breeder. Over the years he has many joint and neurological issues. He started as a puppy with demodectic mange in his first 8 months. We got him through that but our vet did tell us this is a sign of a weakened immune system and bad breeding. Then over the years we have had him with an orthopedic specialist since the age of 3 for shoulder joint calcifications and other arthritic issues. The latest though in the last 2 years is that he has mild Wobblers and at this time we are seeing a neurologist (1 of only 6 in the world). Dr Ko to help with That and a degenerative spinal disorder that is affecting him at this time. We are getting him through this but BUYER BEWARE of the over breeding going on through this breeder resulting in Danes with genetic issues. read more

We inquired with Penrose Kennels about adopting one of their adult great danes and visited their kennel to meet two potential matches. We were interested in adopting one of the female danes that we met and requested to see her medical records, which Penrose Kennels provided us. The medical records revealed that a vet had previously diagnosed the dog with some sort of liver condition. I asked the Penrose breeder if she had further information on the severity of the dog's liver condition and she provided me a response from the original owner that did not address my question. She further attempted to downplay the dog's medical condition by saying the Vet didn't know what they were talking about. We then asked the breeder to facilitate gaining permission from the original owners so that we could speak to the Vet about the dog's health so that we could better understand the dog's condition and specific needs. The breeder was unwilling to do this and said the we had unrealistic expectations in the adoption process. This essentially ended the adoption process for us because the breeder was unwilling to take the steps to address our questions and gave an impression of a lack of transparency. We were disappointed because we were prepared to give the dog a loving and comfortable home, but unfortunately the breeder didn't show the patience or understanding to fully answer our concerns. read more
