I've been to the PF in west Ashley, Mt P and now James island... and JI has to be the worst. I wish…read morethere was more room in the back for stretching and floor work. Instead hey have a few scattered machines that you have to set your mats in the middle of. This place gets packed fast during peak hours. About 5P during the week nearly every machine is full (something to keep in mind when you join and note that it will be worse at the start of the new year as people try to tackle those new year resolutions. ) I ended up switching gyms during the summer when they offered free memberships to teens. If it wasn't busy before it was then as parents used it as a daycare and you would have groups of 3-6 teenagers all hanging out, crowding machines but not working out. It was a nightmare. I don't know why this one is so much worse than the other locations but I hope they figure it out. This is also advertised as a 24hr gym but they close at 7p on the weekends. There are no scales in the gym to track your progress because I was told it might offend some people. (You're either in the gym to be loose weight or build muscle so scales are important to have.) Over the weekend they installed new equipment. That has bumped my rating up from 2 to 3 stars.

If you live or work downtown, this gym is your best budget option, as it's a short drive on the James Island Connector, and peninsula gyms are pricey. This is also a good gym option for those visiting Folly Beach who may want to get their workout in. The eight TVs on the walls have a great variety of trash TV for your workout enjoyment, including Bravo, Food Network, and several ESPN channels. I appreciated that none of the TVs were set to news, because I like to escape the dumpster fire of the world when I work out. I have a Planet Fitness Black Card membership, and this is certainly one of the nicest locations in Charleston.

I'm dropping my review down by a star. I have been here over a year now and while I like the gym…read moretheir AC is horrendous. I understand it's a big facility, of course everyone working out is going to heat the place up... so you would think they'd invest in a better unit and or run it colder. Within five minutes of being there, before I start working out on occasions, I'm already sweating. I don't remember it being this bad last summer. And that's the thing- it's not even summer yet so how much worse is this going to get? The staff remains nice and friendly. There has been no update in the equipment in the last year I've attended so half of it is new and half is outdated. That being said everything works well and there is something for everyone. Even when it is busy there is always equipment or space available for you to move. I've heard other members complain about the teens hanging around. While I haven't experienced that myself yet I can only pray this doesn't turn into another PF. That's why I left that gym- because parents used it as a daycare and instead of the teens working out they just hogged equipment to yap. I'll update over the summer.

Good gym, but staff is horrible. For reference, I only workout here on weekends. I left my stuff in…read morea locker with a lock on it, and the next time I came, the lock had been cut and everything removed. When I asked staff why this happened, they told me that you can't leave stuff in the locker, you have to take it with you so you don't take one up. What's the point of a locker then? On top of that, I was never notified of this when I got my membership. Extremely dumb rule and no other gym does this.

I started training with Rebecca and couldn't be more thankful. She can spot my BS from a mile away and always pushes me harder than I'd push myself. Quite honestly, I was an athlete in high school... playing every sport I could each season. Working…read moreout came naturally with that and I never really had to think much about it. Then, transitioning through college I struggled to find what "worked". I started down this path of doing the fad workouts until I became sick of them and I no longer enjoyed it (which came way too quickly). Fast forward about 10 years, and that old way of thinking and approaching exercise is totally gone. I started with Black Flag in Jan 2020 and I'm thrilled to say I'm still going strong over a year later (pandemic and all). Through bootcamp classes and personal training with Mike, not only do I enjoy going to the gym but the workouts make it so that I never feel like I'm getting "bored" or that I wish I was doing something else... not to mention I'm the strongest, both physically and mentally, that I've ever been. Between the incredible trainers and the variety of workouts they offer, I'm happy to say I've found my forever gym.

Looking for a gym with a great community vibe? Anytime Fitness has you covered…read more This is the most well kept and organized gym that I have ever been to. After relocating to Johns Island, I needed a new place to work out. This was the first, and last gym that I toured. It's immediately apparent after walking in that cleanliness and friendliness are two of the top priorities of this facility. The equipment is incredibly varied and you should be able to find everything you need for a good workout. When you enter there is a small table and sitting area to the left where you can sign up for a membership or chill out. The gym offers a wide open space with really good distancing in between machines so it never feels too crowded. The back of the gym has a small area with cubbies where you can leave your bags, personal items, and anything you don't want to carry around with you. The entire facility is accessed through a key fob and their are security cameras scattered throughout the building. You really don't get the feeling that anyone is going to steal anything because of the community vibe of the gym. There are bathrooms and showers on site for gym members, and a small refrigerator with drinks that uses the honor system for payment. WIFI is available and the connection has been great from all corners of the gym. Most notably, the staff and trainers always have positive attitudes and say hello when you walk in. A special shout out to Mackenzie for always helping out members when it's needed and for always having an infectious smile that makes you feel welcome. If you're looking for a new gym in the Johns Island area, they offer a free trial day so you can see what it's like for yourself!

As someone who has had the privilege to live in a few major cities and travel to smaller ones for…read morework, I have trained at many Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gyms across the United States. Generally speaking, each gym will vary in instruction quality, class availability, mat space, and student dynamics. After a year of training at Folly Jiu Jitsu, I can safely say that this gym excels in all four areas. The instructors here come from various backgrounds and have complementing skill sets. It's your first day and you have never set a foot on the mat before? Perfect. You want to get better at judo? Say no no more. Wrestling? Easy. Leg locks? Maybe even easier. Every instructor here has a knack for communicating and is well-equipped to teach you at whatever stage you are in your BJJ journey with a genuine smile on their face. Class availability is one of FJJ's strong suits: you can attend classes as early as 6am or late as 6pm, whatever works best for your schedule. The great part about this set up is you can easily join another class in the event you miss your typical session or if you are just looking to switch things up. Having a diverse set of talented instructors available throughout the day helps to keep your grappling mind and skills fresh. The gym used to be a former firehouse, which allows for an incredibly large mat space (one of the biggest I've personally trained on), and is kept meticulously clean by the staff. The overhead honeycomb lighting is a nice artistic touch and the gym is equipped with locker rooms and showers. As someone who has trained in a few crowded small gyms, having all of this space to move around in is incredible. As an extension of the instructors, the students here are very welcoming and all are at different stages of their jiu jitsu journey. There is a healthy mix of beginners, intermediate, and advanced practitioners in any of the classes one might attend; more importantly, everyone is looking to learn and help each other learn day in and day out. All in all, this gym has a lot to offer to anyone at any chapter of their jiu jitsu journey. From the casual beginner to the seasoned competitor, there is always something for someone to learn here. Whether you are looking to start Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for the first time or just visiting Charleston, swing by Folly Jiu Jitsu and you will be welcomed with open arms.
