Not a big place, but still one of the best comic stores I've ever been to. Staff are knowledgeable and not pretentious. Nice selection of indie comics as well as your standard mainstream ones. They also sell vinyl records here, pretty good ones, not just to be fashionable. The only reason why I don't go more often is that I could easily spend hundreds of dollars here every time. I can not express how much I love this shop. We drove to Portland solely to come and check out this shop since we recently moved to the area. I've been dying to check out the local comic book shops and Floating World Comics was one of the first on my list. Walking into the store, I was surprised just how much merchandise they managed to fit in this space and not feel cramped at all. I was pleasantly surprised to find a selection of vinyl records for sale near the front of the store which was really unexpected. Coming from Chicago, comic shops and record stores are kind of a dying breed which is rather unfortunate. The selection is incredibly well laid out and everything was easy to find. The cashier was extremely personable and friendly and offered some great service. I will definietely make sure to make a stop at Floating World Comics in the future anytime I'm in Portland. read more

I am a nerd for all things comics. My son is my mini me in this respect. It doesn't matter where we go. We have to find a good comic book store, we have to find a good bookstore, and we have to find a place to buy Pokemon cards if the first two places for some reason do not have them... I brought my son to explore downtown Portland during the Rose Festival. We started exploring really early in the morning. Stopping first at Voodoo for some doughnut lovin. Then off to explore China Town. We happened upon Floating World Comics because while exploring we noticed a shop with people waiting outside... Not just two people, but about 5 people waiting for this shop to open. "What are you waiting for?" I ask. "The comic shop to open up..." says one guy as he points up at the sign. Must be good. Must be. The shop is supposed to open at 11... But here was this group of patrons still waiting at 11:10. The minutes came and went. We all waited, chatting about our favorite comics, heroes, and cartoons. It was probably the best time I have ever had waiting for a store to open. Even though the store took a good 30 minutes to open I wasn't angry. When we finally did get in the store I'd say the options were pretty typical of a comic store; great selection, knowledgeable staff, clean and well organized shop. My son spent the entirety of our time in this store in one section in the front seemingly designated for his age group. He finally decided on a few Pokemon, Adventure Time, and Ninja Turtle comics. I didn't get anything for myself this time but I was super impressed with the selection. I particularly considered purchasing The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia... We probably could have spent all day in this shop alone and been perfectly content. read more

Tiny little indie comic shop nestled in heart of Old Town. I am always able to acquire a missing issue of something whenever I stop by which always make it worth a trip whenever I happen to be in the area. Mike and I had our first encounter with Floating World back when it was tiny shop with big plans. The owner greeted us kindly and we took our time browsing the new comics and Indy zines. Now it's relocated and it's got room to breathe. With plenty of room to look around at what's new and catch up on what you might have missed last Wednesday. We were able to find this art book with a collection of Drink and Draw art featuring artists like Dave Johnson and Felipe Smith in it. Also having the option of having both mainstream and Indy choices all in one shop makes it a place you want to check out on a regular basis. Another thing that makes Floating World stand out is their current gallery showing of David Mack artwork. Very nice! If your into comic books or would like to know more about them, Floating World is definitely a place you want to check out. read more

Aside from a good selection of comics, what I thought was particularly special about Floating World was a particularly large section devoted to original art. Even better, the art was reasonably-priced -- and good, too! They didn't feel the need to feature only comic art, which helped a ton. read more

Floating World Comics is a beautiful store that sells comics and graphic novels as well as zines and locally made art. Their comic book collection is smaller than some others I have seen but they make up for it with a great selection of graphic novels and independent comics. The staff was super friendly and knowledgeable and provided me with some great recommendations. Definitely on the pricey side but you won't regret it. read more

I was randomly walking around Downtown Portland when the word "COMICS" on this store's front door caught my eye. I waltzed in, and was *very* impressed with what I found. This is my platonic ideal for a comic shop. Nice music, a little spread of vintage vinyls, and some nice art-toys for the coffee table. (The Street Fighter-themed M.U.S.C.L.E. pack gave me a big smile!) The selection of comics was nothing short of amazing. Ignoring the ever-looming presence of the Big Two, we also had a nice collection of Indies from Archie and IDW, as well as local artists. There was even a decent selection of manga! The location was cozy; I can imagine some feeling cramped, but I felt right at home with the close shelves. I'll be sure to visit this store in the near future, it's too charming to pass up. One minor (facetious) complaint: I was teased with posters on the windows featuring Kamen Rider V3, Kikaider, and Moon Knight. I found no such things inside. Points for vintage posters featuring foreign super-heroes (that I love), at least--that made my day. read more

This comic shop leans toward the hipsters with indie comics and away from the neckbeards and superheores. They'll have all of the new 52, but there's a lot of widely varied local art and slightly more grounded comic books about childhood in the midwest or ethnic cleansing as well. I found a lot of wordless funky monsters and aliens.There's even porn with artistic merit. They sold TMNT cards or local artist handmade creature cards for a buck each. Floating World is an awesome store with all sorts of weird art books and beautiful art-comics and a pretty good selection of minis and zines too. (Not to mention a decent selection of superhero stuff if you swing that way.) On First Thursdays they have art openings, there is coffee and pinball across the street, and the owner, Jason, is really friendly and interested in the community. This. Place. Is. Awesome. Was visiting from out of town, made a point to stop in. Expected to spend around $50, was prepared to drop $100, ended up blowing $150. Which is not to say Floating World is expensive, that's just how much good stuff I found. The store looks great, good tunes, great mainstream/alt selections, well laid out (there's even a record section), and the staff was completely friendly and helpful. I even asked for a recommendation based on an annoyingly vague description of what I was looking for, and the employee (Dana, I think?) gave me multiple options, one of which was PERFECT. (by the way, thanks again for your help!) It's is also in a great neighborhood, in case you're a tourist like I was. Floating World lived up to all my expectations. There are undoubtedly other great comic shops in Portland, but if you need to hit one, this place is flawless. read more

I rarely am impressed enough or disappointed enough to write a review. Today unfortunately it's the latter. I love to support local shops. I hate big box stores and even when it's a little pricier I try to buy from mom and pop places in place of the Internet. Since moving to Portland I really fell in love with Floating World and make it there once or twice a month. For the past few months I've been trying to get my hands on an artist's proof edition of a favorite comic. They only get 1 in every few weeks or months or so and finally 2 weeks ago I asked to be informed when the next one came in so I could grab it! Gave my info and it was in the computer for anyone that cared to look. Yesterday I was in the neighborhood and because it was a week or so past when they said it would be in I popped in to check on it. Imagine my surprise when I was told it had just been sold the day before. I was a bit shocked and the woman checked on the computer and said yup you're info was here sorry we didn't contact you. Ok mistakes happen but I was clearly annoyed. All I got was a generic "sorry" and a blank stare. After an uncomfortable moment she says oh I can order another one but it might be a few weeks. At this point I was frustrated and said well maybe I'll just order it online. The woman says ok sorry I'll just delete your info. No further attempt to make it right or in any other way try to make it up to me. Considering the money I have dropped in there the past year or so it was pretty cold. The reason I support local shops is for the connection and personal care from the store. Without that what other reason is there to patronize an establishment? Price? No I can get most things cheaper online. It's for that precious customer service and to combat the encroaching corporate state. Giving 2 stars for the amazing inventory but wish I didn't have to deduct 3 for the generic attitude. Severely dismayed with how this was handled. Great way to keep a customer guess I'll be ordering my comics online from now on. read more

This is my favorite comic store in Portland. They have a wide range of independent and main stream comics. They also have a lot of rare stuff you won't find anywhere else including a selection of locally made comics, and artwork as well as hosting regular signings and events. They were very knowledgeable about comics. I was a little worried that maybe they only knew about Fantagraphics etc....., but everything I asked about the guy knew what he was talking about, and recommended some wonderful things that I didn't know about. read more

Excellent shop with both comics and zines. Onsite owner obviously takes his job seriously. There is a design gallery in the same building for a larger dose of culture and some Chinese restaurants within walking distance so you can combine this with a decent lunch. read more

I visited Portland over the weekend and stumbled upon this shop by accident. I used to live in Portland for about 5 years and had never happened upon this place. Granted, it was only within the past couple of years that I've grown to love comics, graphic novels, and DIY zines - but still, I was surprised that I'd never found it sooner. I'd go to Reading Frenzy to take care of my DIY comic/zine desires (man, that tiny place rocks). I think Floating World Comics is a tad better because there is a wider variety of things. Large collection of indie comics and books as well as mainstream stuff. I could spend all day wandering around this store, exploring all the different, awesome books they have, all the interesting art. I can't wait to go back again. read more
