And while I appreciate being able to have a nice selection of items beyond normal--for example, 50 different outdoor table sets vs. 2-3 in some stores--much of this is beyond overkill. In the end, the strength of this kind of size of store and diversity of product is also its weakness. I dare you to find something small without hunting down an employee, which can be a daunting task since every employee probably patrols and area 50 yards square, complicated by multiple isles, assisting other shoppers, etc. How big is it? Bigger than it looks from the outside, much deeper, mind boggling, think the first time you walked into Nebraska Furniture Mart and realized they could hold a 5K race around the outside of the building and it would take less than 3 laps. Yea, this place is easily that big. So, while a great destination, and the employees we finally ran into were helpful, it's hard to beat the small mom and pop store in town that will continue to get most of my business where i can run in and get what you need and be out in less than 5 minutes. Here it'll take you that long to walk from your car into the center of the store. Advantage if you need to look at 25 different sizes and types of tomato cages vs. 2-3. In the end, the size is kind of too much for most of my needs, but that's not necessarily a criticism, it just is what it is. There was no pricing on the products, just a QR code to scan. In the rain the only way to do so was to climb on to their pallet of product to get close enough to QR to scan. 3. When I was checking out the prices rang up higher than what the QR code indicated. I was told the QR price was after the rebate; which is the first I'd heard of a rebate. 4. One is required to complete the Menard's rebate form and mail it in, within a week, to get a "Menards Merchandise Credit Check". I saw nothing anywhere that indicated prices posted were "After Rebate". It seems to me that if prices are "After Rebate", that should be bold displayed everywhere. I would never purchase anything if I knew to get the best price required a rebate. ALSO, how many would bother with an 11% discount that totals less than a couple dollars, especially after deducting the cost of postage, envelope and time to mail in and to cash the dang check, which may only be valid for a Menard's. NO THANKS! Never darkening that door again!

Every time I have ventured into Harbor Freight, though, it has been a positive experience. The store in Lawrence is just like any other HF in any other city. The items are nicely arranged and aisles are easily marked. There is no trouble finding what you need. If you need to ask for assistance, there seems to be someone always available to help. The last time I was in the store, the team member that helped me was very nice and had a great sense of humor which I thoroughly enjoyed. Anytime an employee can make you laugh, it's a good time. With his guidance I was able to find just what I needed. This store is easy to access and there is plenty of parking. The check out process was quick and efficient. The cashier even told me about savings opportunities and coupons. He was helpful and able to assist me with saving a few bucks. I appreciate his suggestions very much. Everything here is reasonably priced and I have had good luck with product durability. Again, I do not use tools frequently but what I have bought and used have been durable.

There's a lot to love about Cottin's. They rent cotton candy (COTTIN Candy?!) and icee machines. They sell all kinds of tape. They sell a lot of different colored and sized novelty light bulbs. They sell old school Radio Flyer wagons. It feels like it could be 1950 in there, but with a 2010 sensibility. The staff, all young and friendly, rule the school. As Lydia A mentions below, they are part of what makes Cottin's such an enjoyable place to be. A "place to be"?! Yes! It's an experience! Even getting keys made is kinda fun (OK, well, that's an exaggeration. It is quick and painless, however!) OTOH, you'd have to drag me kicking and screaming into one of my most hated stores ever...HOME DEPOT. Blargh! I called them about it twice and stopped by in person a couple of other times. There were never any attempts by them to contact me. No status updates, nothing. There is a lack of organization in the shop. My repair ticket was missing from their log book. They did not know which saw was mine; I had to identify it for them. I had to tell them the case sitting in the corner was also mine. I had brought in a chain to be sharpened at the same time; they had lost it. To be fair, they were apologetic, and they gave me a new chain and refunded my $45 that was the upfront cost of diagnosing the problem without me having to ask. However, I will not be going back there.
