Thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Florence Griswold Museum. We start at the art galleries chalk full of beautiful period artwork. We ventured to the outdoor walk. Even on an overcast day it's beautiful. We saved the best for last looking at Florence's home where she ran a boarding house for artists. Truly breathtaking! The docent was lovely and gave us so much knowledge and information. An added bonus was our venture was at Christmas. This Connecticut site isn't to be missed!!

Color us embarrassed that it took so long for us to visit this museum situated along the banks of the Lieutenant River. There are several buildings included in the museum campus with us starting off at the Krieble Gallery where we enjoyed the current exhibition of Currier & Ives prints. A short stop at the historic barn was made before we followed the path to the historic Griswold House itself. There we met a docent who walked us from room to room while providing a commentary on the history of Miss Florence's boarding house. It was nearing the end of the day so we decided to head home without walking around the entire property so a return visit in the spring is virtually guaranteed.

Had a lobster salad with yellow wilted arugula. They said sorry. No fresh greens and no cost adjustment. $31

Check out this amazing historic business that Florence Griswold founded as an art colony. It's an amazing piece of history and inspiration for me as a woman living here in CT. There continues to be an artist in residence even today with realistic confectionary desserts sprinkled with nature such as bugs! Admission was $5 and was well worth the money. I highly recommend checking out Café Flo after the tour.

I bring my 4th grade students in an art field trip here every year. Shelby and Julie are fantastic teachers, they lead the students through a painting lesson and everyone has a fabulous time. There is studio space and if the weather is nice, groups paint en plein air down by the river! Highly recommend this experience!! The gallery is always changing with new exhibits. In Octobers, there is the Wee Faerie Village, a unique display of created faerie houses by local artists/schools. Love coming here!

Amazing gardens beautifully presented and maintained.

We'll worth a half day visit. Fascinating and impeccably presented art works and historic home recreated to 1910 period.

Review only for the annual Wee Fairie Village exhibit. Late September early October every year the museum hosts local artists and schools which create 30 something fairy "stations" you receive a map & sticker and go on the "hunt for the faeries" Some of the creations are magnificent, the entire exhibit is outside in the picturesque gardens of the museum which are expansive and next to a beautiful river. I've been taking my daughters every year since they were "wee" themselves and would wholeheartedly believe that fairies had created these masterpieces. They are now teens and still ask to go. Each year is different and some years have been themed, every time it is worth admission and I would recommend it to anyone who needs a magical hour or two in their lives.

I went into this museum having no idea who Florence Griswold was or why anyone cared about her house, but I love a good museum so off I went. This museum is very well done - there's an introductory video that answered those questions very quickly and three rooms for a rotating exhibits (the current exhibit is the very beautiful but very sad commentary on how badly humans are abusing the planet). The museum has a gift shop with fun toys for kids, beautiful jewelry and many books on art. A little pricey, but if you have the Museum Passport you can save 10%. The house is two floors - the top floor has examples of art produced in the boarding house Ms. Griswold ran, and the bottom floor has furniture from her period interspersed with the work of a living artist. As of this writing, that artist worked with bugs so if that's a line in the sand for you, check their website when the next exhibit will be. The bugs are fascinating, and hearing from the docents the work that went into the display is very interesting, but if you can't cross a doorway because you see a large bug on the other side, perhaps see what will be there Fall 2019!

Very cute and charming museum! It's small enough that you'll be done with the place within 2 hours, including the grounds. The staff is very helpful and eager to educate you. The garden is lovely, definitely my favorite part. $10 admission price (they did not participate in CT open house day, which is the day we went). A great way to occupy a few hours!

We went to see Noel Paul Stookey, the surviving member of Peter, Paul and Mary, and his 90-minute concert was a great joy with new songs and of course some of the PPM classics ("If I Had a Hammer" and "Puff, the Magic Dragon," for instance). His standing ovation was richly deserved. We'll be eagerly heading back to see several more performances in the theater later this year. The theater is officially the Katherine Hepburn Cultural Center honoring the award-winning actress who lived close by before her death in 2003. There is a small museum on the ground floor that is a lovely tribute to her. It shows off some of her costumes, artifacts from her long Hollywood career, letters, etc. There's also a small gift shop and a bar nearby where beverages alcoholic and non may be purchased (and taken upstairs to the theater). The theater is reached by stairs or an elevator and seats close to 300 people with remarkably good sightlines from every seat that we could see. There's a friendly staff to guide the way, and everything about the concert-going experience for us was first class. The front of the theater is attractive and very imposing with steep steps. Happily that isn't how you have to get it. Instead, walk around to the side and enter there close to the box office and the museum. There's lots of parking on the street and in lot off the street. It's all free. Speaking of money, we found the ticket prices here to be quite reasonable. Our tickets were $59, and that's not too far off from other performances we checked. It seems to us a good value. And Old Saybrook is an attractive area; the broad, tree-lined Main Street has lots of restaurants and shops for pre- or post-concert enjoyment.

Very wealthy individuals would donate vast sums of money to build libraries in honor of deceased loved ones. The Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library is a classic example. Charles Ludington gave money to the town of Old Lyme to build a library to memorialize his mother in law, Phoebe Griffin Noyes. The library was opened in 1898 and was very pleasant and lovely but rather modest by the standards of some of the more grand and opulent libraries being built. It served well for decades and was renovated and expanded over the years. The largest building project was in 1955 and the size of the library was great expanded. The library today is a very pleasant place, especially the old, original section. Unfortunately the new addition is rather incongruent with the original part and it is obvious when you go from one part to the other. Even parts of the original wall is exposed as you go from one part to another. The inside of the library is very colorful with all kinds of cool displays and art and plenty of computers and modern conveniences. An interesting and comfy library that is a nice memorial to a person long gone but not forgotten.

A simply gorgeous gallery…read more I was fortunate to have visited the Melanie Carr Gallery on its opening night, viewing a friend's art displayed in the exhibition "Cool + Collected." In alignment with the exhibition's theme, the gallery was minimally decorated so as to let numerous works of art on the walls be the focal points. The owner, Melanie, herself was walking around throughout the reception to talk to guests and to discuss the artwork being displayed. I moseyed around the gallery, chatted with Melanie and a couple of the artists whose work was being displayed for a little bit, and struck up various conversations with other guests viewing the same pieces that I was. All art displayed was for sale and Melanie created sheets with lists containing the name of the work, the artist, and the cost for each piece. There was also additional work by the artists featured in the exhibition in a smaller pull-out drawer cabinet at the back of the main gallery space, which was accessed by the some of the artists throughout the time that I was there who were chatting with guests about their techniques and inspiration. This rectangular-shaped gallery is perfect for showcasing art. The gallery really set up an ideal space in which others could freely move and talk with one another. There's also an abundant amount of wall space and there is a small refreshment area with restrooms right in the back. When I visited for the opening night, there was champagne and fruit-flavored water along with all sorts of candy--yes, candy!! Melanie wanted to do something different--not your typical fancy cheese that no one knows what it is. The candy was a hit with everyone, so Melanie definitely nailed it [again] there. She utilizes every bit of the gallery's space well. For this gallery, there are only two downsides. First, I found it a little difficult to get to. My GPS had me stop in the middle of a roundabout right near the gallery--this with the address of the gallery itself set. I hadn't been to this area of Essex, so I found it hard to navigate. Luckily no one was around to get irritated with my slow and hesitant driving, and I subsequently saw the gallery's bright colors and sign soon after I came into the roundabout; I just kept going around the circle to pull up into a space on the gallery's street. (The gallery is left out of the roundabout, just as a heads up.) Parking is definitely not the easiest, which is the second downside. There's only a few spots on the street right out front and no nearby lots (that I could see). It may take going around the block a few times and hoping to spot a vacant parking spot on a nearby street if you come at a busy time. It's a really nice, definition-of-New-England town, so a little walk about is probably quite excellent anyway. All driving and parking issues are worth supporting this local gallery and the local artists it showcases. I'm really impressed with this space and the people running it. I will definitely be back again and again because I love art and I love supporting local artists and galleries. I noticed that there will be new exhibitions coming soon, too. The Melanie Carr Gallery is a definite must-do for all art lovers and gallery dwellers, so go check it out!!

We were looking for an activity that would be fun for a multigenerational group of 23 people with toddlers, seniors, and everyone in between. We had been in communication with Oliver for months in advance. About two weeks before the big day, we saw that the forecast called for showers throughout Memorial Day weekend, particularly the Sunday of our planned cruise. We monitored the weather and decided to make a decision closer to the day. Throughout the entire process of planning, Oliver was responsive, reliable, accommodating, and kind. On the morning of the trip, Oliver gave us multiple options and worked with us to make sure that we could cancel and get a full refund due to the inclement weather. He provided us with agency up to the last hour of decision making. On a day that could have been really stressful, Oliver alleviated some of that stress. That is exceptional customer service, and that is the reason we will be coming back to the Argia for another special occasion. You board at the dock just next to the bridge in Mystic, so it couldn't be more convenient if you're exploring Mystic for a day or a weekend. The Argia allows you to bring alcohol (wine and beer) on board (although they ask that you not bring large coolers - there's no room for them), so we brought a couple of bottles of wine bought from the great wine shop down the street. Our sail was two hours long, and the staff narrated for some of the sailing time - pointing out historic and interesting sites along the sail (islands with an interesting history, homes with interesting architecture, etc.).
