This review is strictly about the CONNECTICUT RIVER CRUISE offered aboard the historic Mary E, a 75-foot schooner built in 1906. The dock is located right outside the museum. Three excursions are offered daily between May and October (weather permitting) and include free admission to Museum exhibits and galleries. The departures at 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm are 1.5 hour cruises. The departure at 5:30 pm (the sunset cruise) is longer at 2 hours. The cruise along the river is so peaceful and relaxing that it's perfect for a picnic. While gliding along the river, the captain and crew provide some interesting tidbits about the schooner, the area and the river's history. As much as possible the sails are used to maneuver the river, but the schooner also comes with a motor. I think the captain said something about there being more wind earlier in the day (there's some scientific reason) so the sails are used more on the earlier cruises. I thoroughly enjoyed the cruise! The waters are calm so I think it's doable for those who might otherwise get seasick. The captain and crew are very knowledgeable and are also entertaining. Please remember to tip! Come early to browse the shops in this cute area and to check out the Museum. About an hour drive from New Haven.

If you're planning a trip to the museum take advantage of the river excursion and museum package. Regular admission is $8 for adults but with the package you play $26 for the museum visit and a 1.5 hr cruise on the Mary E. The hours for the cruises are 1:30 pm to 3:30pm. At sunset the 2hr sail is $30 /person. We didn't get a chance to go out on the boat because there was a rainstorm but the museum was interesting. It's not a huge place, we were able to navigate the entire museum (all 3 floors) in less than an hour. The museum is appropriate for 5th graders as many of the exhibits cover what is taught in 5th grade History. I enjoyed walking around the area. There were lots of antique shops. Most of the shops are reasonable priced. I would go back but on a sunny day and spend time in the restaurants around the area. Gorgeous view!

What a nice little museum. I just went this weekend and unfortunately part of the museum is under construction due to a fire. The museum was free but donations were encouraged. They were very friendly, informative and helpful. I hope to return when the fire damaged areas have been repaired. It was very informative and as the other poster stated it dealt with the War of 1812 and the Revolutionary War.

this place is great. it has three floors of exhibits. the third floor is my favorite. it is the paranormal and the spooky. the first floor has some revolutionary war stuff. the second floor has some models of ships. and the Connecticut river is right out front. admission is ten dollars. but they do have a senior citizen discount. they take two dollars off. I spent a hour in the wonderful place. they also have recordings you can listen to on various topics.

We have been enjoying the Connecticut river journeys on the Riverquest for several years now & learn something new every trip. Any cruise is a fun outing but we give high marks to the Old Saybrook lighthouse cruise & the Swallow migration cruises offered late summer, early fall. Several cruises do have tables set up where you can bring food & libations on board for a DIY onboard picnic while you cast a keen eye for vultures, osprey, eagles, cormorants & other water fowl, nesting hunting & feeding on the river. The scenery is wonderful. The ship is comfortable. 5 well earned stars.

We went on a steamboat ride and it felt like a ferry ride, crowded and loud. We were only 18 people in the riverboat so each group had our own table where we brought our own food. They provided binoculars for us to see things. We saw bald eagles, swallows, egrets, swan, etc. The crew was really knowledgeable. He taught us why the mute swan is an invasive species and how they damage the ecosystem. The ride was quite smooth and the breeze at the end of the day was really soothing. We didn't see the sunset unfortunately. The neighborhood in the area is very quaint and cute. People are extremely nice when compared to NYC. They say hi all the time. There is parking nearby but you had to pay attention to the signs. I didn't so I had to look further which I didn't revert because we got to explore the neighborhood.

Much more than brunch!…read more I wanted to treat my parents to brunch and I found this truly unique venue where you can dine on a yacht on the CT River and dance/listen to music! It is the 2-hour fall foliage brunch cruise on the Lady Katharine yacht called the Mystique. You arrive by 10:30am at Eagle Landing State Park in Haddam, and everyone (I'd estimate about 150 people, tops) begins the boarding process. You have pre-assigned tables and can request to sit together with family/friends ahead of time. The buffet brunch is hot and ready as soon as you board which is great because there are literally no lines - it's a gradual process. Also, the food is out and replenished for a long time, so you don't have to worry about not getting any, e.g. if you decide to partake in the music and view on the top deck first, you can eat when you are ready. The buffet consisted of salad, rolls, salmon, stuffed chicken with a delicious cranberry stuffing, tortellini, tender beef tips with gravy, carved ham with a delicious sauce, Belgian waffles with fruit and cream toppings, eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, raw salmon w/capers and several desserts... I'm probably forgetting something. There is a cash bar but coffee, juice and tea are free ($3 for a fountain beverage which I thought was strange). The staff members were all incredibly friendly and attentive. There was a 3-piece band playing a variety of music on the top deck and people were having fun dancing. The views were amazing, especially seeing Gillette's Castle from the water. For only $50-ish dollars per person, this was an awesome alternative to your usual brunch buffet!
