We were not disappointed - mostly. So personally, I have some 'odd' standards. The wine paring was different. They pared, light to heavy, white to red. But it was all from the same vintner. So someone had a 'deal', it wasn't based on the subtleties of each varietal, it was what they had. This was hardly the choice of a sommelier, more an arrangement. That being said, the wine wasn't bad, just too...flat in its variety. On to the food. We all ordered the 7 course tasting menu with wine paring (see snarky comments above). 1) foie gras, almond and cherry - happiness and complexity. I don't agree with the paring, a sparkling white was lost to the bravado of the appetizer 2) amberjac ceviche with guacamole and puffed rice - unique juxtaposition of temperatures and flavor profiles 3) rabbit saccotinni, radish, parmesan and rosemary 4) sweet peppers spaghetti, lavender ricotta cheese, dry gia 5) turbot fillet in crust, chick peas, muscles and herbs 6) cinta Senese pork, fennel purée, bbq lettuce and licorice sauce 7) milk - like ice creamy stuff with fancy stuff Coffee - well, they gave us a menu and came back for our order 35 minutes later, after we flagged the waiter down....I was done...done Decor - incredible. On the veranda with amazing, historic views of the local castle. Staff - efficient and well versed on the material but with an overtone of displeasure at our prescience. Still, their efficiency was worthy of the 1 Michelin star. Overall, because it's a Michelins rated restaurant, I am being picky, very picky. 5 people, almost 900 euros.... Bottom line: I wouldn't go again unless invited or for a wedding.

The property itself is absolutely breathtaking, situated on a hill, in a luxury complex of the castle. The restaurant features an outdoor patio and an indoor, formal space. I'd have preferred sitting outside, but it was a very chilly night in April, in the off-season. The restaurant used to be a private club, but recently became open to public. The service was attentive and top notch. You have the option of ordering a 7-course tasting menu or go rogue, and order á la carte. I opted for a 4-course menu, because I was specifically looking to try the snails, fish courses and sweetbreads. The welcome dish was beautifully presented and consisted of various proteins in different animal forms nestled on moss in minimalist dishes. The breads followed with an array of salts collected from different corners of the world, along with butter and a delicious olive oil. The amuse bouche was my least favorite, constructed of duck and sesame crisp. As I visited in spring, I noticed a seasonal use of green ingredients - peas, mint, asparagus, nettle, parsley that was repeated throughout the night. I loved the snail appetizer and the char with asparagus and quinoa. The risotto with sweetbreads and the sea bass dish were a beautiful and rich ending to the dinner. I loved the presentation of every dish. I was too full to order a dessert but the staff surprised me with a fun mignardise course. What an imaginative and delicious experience!

When we approached the host he asked us if we prefer to sit in or out. We set out and were surveying the couple of tables between the restaurant and via Caravaggio. Two are surprised and delight he let us across the street to a large terrazzo overlooking the marina and let us to a terrific table there. So everything we ordered was transported by the staff across traffic. The Terazzo filled up quickly with couples and large families enjoying the atmosphere and fabulous cuisine. The service was simultaneously professional and exuded family feeling. As it showed there were several generations of the owners family in the front and back of house. Our piece de resistance was a sea bass grilled for two. magnificent. And for dessert we had a transporting Baba al limoncello. The Baba's were so delicious and so soaked, it was a good thing we had walked to the restaurant and wouldn't have to drive home!

My wife ordered the grilled calamari as a starter and it was PERFECT. The owner of the restaurant was helping us and he showed me the fresh seafood that had just come in. I saw a branzino and he said it was enough for two persons. He offered to do it in a salt bake even though it was not on his daily menu. My wife wanted a side of fresh pasta but not an entire plate. He offered to do a half portion for her. The food did not disappoint. The place is a bit rustic but the food and service was excellent. The entire bill was 80 euros, which we found very inexpensive for the food we ate and wine we drank.

La Regina di Napoli sits right on the Porto Santo Stefano and was described as the must have locals spot. The fish is brought directly to the restaurant from the docking fishermen just steps away. It could not be a more beautiful location for experiencing the most incredible local Italian food. We tried pizzas, appetizers, and everything else. We got a pitcher of Prosecco to wash it all down. This meal made memories that may ruin me for stateside US restaurants. If you've already researched or ventured into Monte Argentario you know that this isn't a tourist town. This is local Italians only where only Italian is spoken. Not many foreign tourists know about Argentario & we quickly had to brush up on ordering and communicating in Italian to get through (and avoid being exiled as annoying tourists) Speaking of exiled, Caravaggio was exiled to Argentario where he lived out his later years. His tomb can be found in Porto Ercole. It's a fascinating, beautiful, very local and rural town. And such an awesome adventure!! Just go!!

At first, I thought there wasn't enough prawns in the dish but there were some under the pasta!

The establishment is very intimate and small. Due to its popularity, it is advised that you call before coming for a view of the ocean and an excellent meal. The chef and her son, Marco, are the only two running the Osteria. Our experience was very personalized, we were catered by both like house guests. The ingredients are as fresh as can be; the port is right in front of you! Quality is top-notch and you can taste the love that is put into making each dish. The calamari, shrimp, and tuna (everything!) we had throughout our lunch were cooked perfectly. One of my favorite menu items is the Baccala Bruschetta (shown in the added picture): salted cod, potato, onion, and more cooked together and placed on 2 kinds of hot toasted bread. My other favorite is the plate of sardines on arucola, drizzled with a sweet, thick balsamic vinegar. The natural saltiness of the sardines, the crisp freshness of the rucola, and the caramel sweetness of the aged balsamic sent me straight to heaven. Everything we ordered was a hit. You can't make a mistake! I have already planned another vacation here, just to revisit this life-changing place.

Sadly that's where the good news ends. I'm willing to take part of the blame, beyond 'buongiorno' and 'arriverderci' I am the ignorant American. Our waitress described a dish, in English, as artichokes, butter and toasted bread. Pretty close. When the dish arrived the warm anchovies in butter (no sign of artichokes) were a bit of a surprise. Shrimp were all peel and eat. The 'scampi' was comprised of large whole limp crawfish. The best dishes were whole oven-baked fish and quite wonderful oven baked sliced potatoes. If you're careful in your ordering you can have a lovely meal and evening. Wonderful fresh salad and cold seafood salad as well. One final caveat - do not sit by the interior windowed wall. It forms a wind and heat seal and turns the table into a sauna.
