The experience felt mentally abusive to my children. Her solution to every issue seemed to be "more therapy," and it often felt as though the focus was on generating additional income rather than helping our family. For example, we asked a simple yes-or-no question about whether she had provided specific direction to one parent. Instead of answering, she sent a lengthy, multi-paragraph email promoting herself as the ongoing family therapist and asking questions about how continued services would be paid for. The actual question went completely unanswered. This was just one of many instances that made it seem she was primarily motivated by money. She also set expectations with a 9 year old but did not follow through, essentially lying to a child. This created such a distrust that all three of my children now have a difficult time trusting therapists. Her documentation is, in some cases, a misrepresentation of a larger situation. She has at times, (unsolicited) offered to update her documentation to be holistically inclusive of all facts, but fails to deliver after repeated reminders. She has an established path, and numerous therapists have explained that she should have deviated once it was not working. I failed to see her deviate, only double down on a non-winning formula that, of course, required more therapy. Many people, including relatives, agree that the kids are worse off today--after our experience with Lis Sappanaro-than they were before meeting with her.

Parents should think carefully before bringing their child here…read more Recently, I brought my minor daughter to this office because I was trying to get her professional help with behavioral and emotional issues. Instead, what should have been a counseling appointment escalated into police involvement and an attempted Baker Act evaluation. Before the appointment even began, my daughter became upset, cried, yelled, and said she wanted to leave. After speaking with her for only approximately one to two minutes, Dr. Chantal Gagnon told my daughter that if she did not come into the office, she would have to call the police. Police were then contacted. I was told that my daughter's crying and yelling were being viewed as signs that she was not safe, and arrangements were made for her to be taken for a Baker Act evaluation. At one point, I was separated from my daughter while she was with law enforcement and counseling staff. I explained that she was a minor having an emotional meltdown because she did not want to participate in counseling. Ultimately, my daughter was not Baker Acted, and I was allowed to take her home. What is most disturbing to me is how quickly a distressed child refusing to participate in a counseling appointment escalated into police involvement and an attempted psychiatric evaluation. I brought my daughter there looking for help--not because I believed she was a danger to herself or anyone else. The experience was frightening and deeply upsetting for both of us. Most importantly, it left my daughter fearful about counseling and made me uncomfortable seeking services from this facility again. Another physician later offered to continue counseling with my daughter, but after what happened, I declined. I have submitted a formal complaint to the appropriate authorities and requested that the circumstances surrounding this incident be reviewed, including whether the response was consistent with Florida requirements and professional standards. My purpose in writing this review is to warn other parents: if you are considering bringing your child here, I strongly recommend asking beforehand how the provider handles a child who becomes distressed, cries, refuses to enter the office, or refuses to participate in an appointment. My daughter went there needing help. We left with an experience that has made her afraid to seek counseling. That is something I never expected when I walked through the door.
