One thing to know, I tried to apply for a library card and the librarian took one look at me and assumed I was not eligible for a library card. So here's my public service announcement, you can absolutely get a library card regardless of what the librarian might assume or tell you. A permanent one if you live in Peconic or Southold OR a temporary one if you are just visiting. "Just visiting? I was really excited to see the new library renovation. Although it has been updated to give a…read moremodern and open feel there is quite a bit of wasted space. The adult section has two areas with individual comfortable chairs to sit and read but if you're interested in being able to go and study and spread your books out then this library is not for you, seating for study is extremely limited. There are two very small tables that can accommodate one person which makes it close to impossible to have a lap top out and write at the same time. And if both are taken you are out of luck. Study rooms are just for groups, The original long tables worked great. There are also less computers to use. I'll still be heading to Cutchogue or mattituck to accommodate my needs.

So after hitting the Yale Center for British Art, we speed walked (sped walked?) over to the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Why? Google it and you'll understand when you see the pictures. Beinicke is Yale's rare book and manuscript library - not their main university library or their law library. The reading room is open to registered researchers only, but the public are welcome to visit the library's exhibition hall. And everyone visiting New Haven should! The library was built in 1963, and the the architecture is incredible. The building is a granite veneer shell, fastened to a structural steel frame. Inside that structure is a glass-enclosed tower of book cases. The granite was milled to 1.25 inches thick to allow filtered daylight in - in the afternoon/early evening, the marble turned an amber color. We walked back past it at night for a different view of the building. It is really incredible architecture, and the library hosts exhibits you can see in the exhibition hall when you visit to enjoy the building (when we visited, the exhibit was "Taught By the Pen: The World of Islamic Manuscripts"). The building is incredible and definitely worth a visit if you're exploring the Yale campus!

The general public has limited access, and this will be a short stop for most people, depending upon the exhibit. Let's be honest--most people stop by for a photo op, for the architecture and the huge column of books. I got a few great photos, got to say I've seen it, and it's cool. Worthwhile. A magnificent library…read more The idea fom this stunning building started back in 1891 when Captain Elihu Spicer decided that his home town needed a library. So he donated money and ideas and by 1894 the Mystic and Noank Library was open for business. The good Captain Spicer started out as a cabin boy at an early age and eventually became masters of several ships and acquired quite a fortune. He became a philanthropist in his later years and spread his wealth around generously. The library that was built is absolutely magnificent. Granite was moved by barge from quarries in Ct., sandstone from Ma., marble from as far away as Africa and tile floors from Italy. This is more of a palace than a library and the building is worth seeing even if you have no interest in books. The place is stunning both inside and outside. The building was expanded in 1951 and another 6,000 ft were added in 1992. The architects did a fantastic job and the venerable building retains its stately, archaic and majestic flavor but has all the conveniences and amenities of a modern library. Truly the best of the old and the new. A grand place to savor, enjoy and be amazed at, libraries like this will never be constructed again.

I've frequented this library quite often since moving to CT. Mainly because they have a children's…read moresection at the lower level. We took the elevator to this level; there is a tween/teen, toddler, and baby section. The baby room is locked from the outside but you can reach over to unlock the door; this is for babies and crawlers. They had some baby toys and books in there. The toddler section has a mini kitchen, fake groceries, baby dolls, doll house, Legos, and toy cars which kept my toddler busy. We put away the toys we played with before we left just to be courteous. We had to print out some paper and it's 10 cents a page. Keep in mind when putting the quantity in the computer, it doesn't specify dollars or pages; it's actually quantity of dollars not pages. This location is nice because it's walking distance to all the stores and restaurants. Overall, a clean and organized library!

Different type of…read morelibrary The only library located on block island, it's been here in various forms since 1875. Although certainly not large as the libraries found in most town or cities, Uriah Dodge has a charm seldom found in other more modern and sanitized libraries. Of course it has a books and magazines, separated into different categories by several small rooms, they actually manage to pack a lot of information into a relatively small space because everything is so well thought out. I guess they had lots of time to think about it in the harsh winters. What I really enjoy is that the library seems to emphasize the local history and environment of the island. Lots of books, records and information about the region which can be easily accessed. The people working there have always been exceptionally helpful and friendly and it is obvious that they enjoy sharing the knowledge. Some cool old pictures on the walls, a small cannon in the lobby and two parakeets chirping and playing over by a wall to give this library a very unique and pleasant atmosphere. Another great thing about the Uriah Dodge Library is the very cold water fountain and very clean bathrooms. Not gas stations bathrooms but library bathrooms which means spotless. Free water and bathrooms are a luxury on Block Island and the facilities here are certain far better than the horrors that are frequently found lurking in the public crappers in the visitor center. A very enjoyable place only a few minutes from Water Street and the ferry terminal. A great place to do some research, check up on what's happening around the island, play with the birds or simply to stop in and get a drink and use the can.
