After two months of trying to get him back to fix his mistake, all I got was one excuse after another: "I'm so busy right now", "maybe next week", "I'm out of town", "I can be there Sunday (and then never showed up or called)". So now I am having to pay another person to sand the door and repaint. Ruben was paid very good money and never lived up to his promises.

Is it rare to find someone who's honest and dependable in the handyman sphere? I don't know. I just…read moreknow that it's easy to get ripped off, since I had one such experience over the summer. But Victor Bibiano at Alpha Handyman service is a refreshing restoration of faith - they're not all bad out there, apparently. I only had a small job to do before we could sell our rental unit up in Atlanta. Victor was pretty responsive, going out there and examining what was wrong. He advised that he can't do the cracked window, but the door bell he'd fix for $150 (plus parts). I didn't know just exactly how much work was involved, but thought, he went out there just to give me a quote, has to then go and get the part from Home Depot, go back to fix it - he's not getting rich off of me, that's for sure! As it turned out, it was even worse (for him)! Honestly, when he showed me pix of what he'd done, I wasn't happy - the chime box inside was not the same size, which left an ugly part of the wall exposed with the old paint (perhaps the folks I hired to paint it should have taken that box off to paint it!!!), and ditto, the button on the outside, since it was not the same size either. Since I worked through the realtor company's service, I let them know I wasn't happy. Victor went out to fix the inside, since there was paint available, but the outside, there was no paint. While he was doing that, the transformer for the bell blew, which meant he had to go back to HD to get a new one (under warranty - no extra charge). He offered to try and match the paint for the outside as well. At that point, I told him, STOP - you have done enough already for $150. We'll worry about the exterior some other way. You could say: why 5 stars when initially he didn't do a good job? Sure - you could 'fault' him for not having anticipated that the new box and button would be different and could require painting, and quoted more. Me, I choose to think of it as 'lesson learned' for him, but he had the right service attitude, and that is much more rare. If half the handymen out there are as conscientious and responsible as Victor, we'd be a better world.
