However, unlike Burney Falls, McCloud Falls has lots of free parking and no entrance fee because it is not a state park. Upper Falls is the least dramatic. An ADA-accessible trail leads to an observation deck about 90 feet above the falls. The fact that people were waiting efficiently in a line to take a photo was more exciting for me than the falls itself. Plus, it is a bit strange looking down on waterfalls. Stupid waterfalls. Anyhow, of the three locations Upper Falls offers a quieter environment, ideal for relaxation and reflection, especially if the water is still. Lower Falls was the most chaotic, with two lanes of parking lot traffic on a one-way road, and more kids sprawling the river for swimming. The area, stocked with trout, seemed the more picnic and day trippy of the falls, the best place to eat your lunch. Middle Falls is the money shot. The postcard. The one that has people posing for hours for the 'Gram. This is because it's 50 feet high and over 100 feet wide, creating a curtain of water over a basalt cliff into a pool below. McCloud Falls deserves its own Yelp page--lumping it in with a generic "McCloud River" listing is like posting Niagara Falls under the Niagara River. Come on now. Together, McCloud Falls and Burney Falls (just an hour apart) make the best one-two punch for waterfall chasers outside of Yosemite. But unlike Burney Falls, located in a state park that charges an entrance fee, McCloud Falls offers something rare and beautiful: lots of free parking and zero entrance fees. My favorite kind of waterfalls are free. Upper Falls is the least dramatic of the trio. A well-maintained ADA-accessible trail leads to an observation deck perched about 90 feet above the falls. Ironically, the orderly line of people waiting to snap a photo was more thrilling than the waterfall itself. Also, there's something a little odd about looking down on a waterfall. Stupid waterfalls. The area, stocked with trout, feels tailor-made for picnics and day trips--the kind of place where sandwiches taste better for no logical reason. Middle Falls is the showstopper. The money shot. The backdrop of annoying Instagram photo sessions. At 50 feet high and over 100 feet wide, it sends a dramatic curtain of water spilling over a basalt cliff into a pool below, with summer crowds climbing the shoreline boulders and wading into the 42 degree water just to ruin your pictures. You can take the long route which requires a lot more walking near the train tracks or attempt the river crossing which could end with you swept miles downriver or drowned. At any moment they could let water out of the down to send a surge down the Sacramento River and send you off through rocks and rapids below the falls. The trains come through fast and around blind corners and the roar of the river masks the sound of the train. It is a dangerous hike and people have died there. I don't recommend it for day trippers or casual tourists. Advanced hiking skills required and extra attention to safety and strong swimmers only. Even in mid August the water is high and freezing and the river crossing is very slippery and dangerous. If you know what you are doing and manage the trek there and back you will have seen one of the areas smaller but pretty waterfalls. There is talk of building a trail with a pedestrian bridge to the falls so once that is done it will likely be overrun with day trippers. I recommend going now but be careful.

Galesville Reservoir is a beautiful water storage area near Azalea, Oregon. It is part of the Upper…read moreCow Creek Watershed and the reservoir is 640 acres. The dam produces electricity by hydropower for the area. The first turnoff is to the campground and the second to the Day Use area and boat ramps. The day use has parking, a playground, picnic area, and pavilion. The park host is near the day use area, as well as The Chief Miwaleta Campground provides cabins for rental, a tent camping and 20 full hookups and 11 non-hookups and 1 group site for RVs. There are two boat ramps (one with two lanes and one primitive ramp) with parking for the reservoir and is a popular area for fishing. Though, the reservoir has a higher-than-allowed level of mercury as described by the Clean Water Act. The cause may be several historic mining claims above the reservoir exist, such as the Red Cloud Mine, which was established to extract mercury from veins of cinnabar. There is information on and recommendations for eating fish on the Oregon.gov website. I do recommend going to the Galesville Reservoir, either for camping or just using the day use area. It's a beautiful place to spend the day or longer.

The river was blown out and instead of cancelling our trip, on very short notice, Mario was able to coordinate with our other guides a run East of the Scott River. Today received 75 dollar money order from him, through the Postal Service (costs 1.75 for money order). Not said 25 dollar processing fee. Total bullshit, bad form and amateur. Will report to BBB and local town. Amateur for sure.

Our Fish Hatchery out in Forth Klamath is a great place to go for an afternoon, enjoy the scenery, and look at the fish! The best part is they have quarter machines with fish food in them, and you can put your quarter in and get a handful of food to feed the fish! When you drive in, they have lots of parking right in front of some of their raceways, and just to the right of the parking area is one of their quarter fish-food machines. Just beyond the food machine is a nice deck out on Crooked Creek with a deep hole where large trout hang out and you can feed them. When we were there, most of the fish in the creek were Rainbows, and most all were well over 12"...and of course its posted, NO FISHING! These guys were fun to feed, and came right up to the surface for the food. A great place for pictures too, this area is really scenic with the creek running through. Walking back to the hatchery area, they have their "show pond" if you walk farther on up. Another fish feeding machine is here, and this creek area is stocked full of fish about 12" long, again from what I could see they looked like all Rainbows. There were SO MANY FISH here!! Really cool to see, and these guys really went after the food! You could walk all up and down this area and there were fish everywhere, very cool! Coming to the end of the "show pond" area, there were a few other waterways, and in the back there were covered raceways with fingerlings in them, just little guys! It was neat to see all the fish, and walk around the grounds as well. Back in the front by the parking area there is a little information kiosk as well that tells you about the hatchery and the lakes they stock with fish. This is a great place to spend an afternoon, and I highly recommend it. Its really fun to come out here, watch and feed the fish, and learn a little bit about hatcheries as well....educational, informative, and FUN!! A+!!!
