On the Sunday we were there, there was a couple who showed our grandkids how life might have been in the 19th century. Very nice touch. My partner could see similarities with her own grandparents' experience (washing, the cooking and stove, the construction). Even the gift store had very well curated things to by that were reflective of the life and times represented by the museum and the state park. We booked our tour the day of and it worked out, but I would recommend booking in advance. This is a small operation, and we felt terrible that they had to get our rentals ready with such short notice. They did everything perfectly, from communication to the meeting spot to punctuality, but please don't do what we did and book in advance if possible!

Maybe don't put a child there? With no manners. It's not the first time it's happened to us either. It's a bad look for LOW and it ruined my husband's birthday for no reason. She told us 10 to 20 minutes. Then she was pissed that we wanted the table we reserved. Were are disappointed because we are locals who go there all the time. What utter bullshit. That host cost you money. I hope you at least talk to the person. She has a bad attitude and we did not. I guess she was freaked out because it was busy? To be fair, this was one of the busiest weekends I've ever seen there. As a business owner myself, I understand that on extremely busy days things don't always go as planned, and because of that I was willing to overlook quite a bit. We stayed in Chipmunk Condo Cabin #3. The cabin had a musty smell and a very small bathroom. The beach area was great for families, and my daughter absolutely loved it. The biggest issue was the food and customer service. Around 2 PM on our first day, we stopped to get pizza for lunch while waiting for our cabin and found out they were already sold out. Since there aren't many nearby dining options, I stopped by the lodge around 6:45 PM to specifically ask when they stopped seating guests. The two younger employees seemed annoyed and unsure but eventually told me the last seating would be at 7:45 PM. I explained that I was traveling with my wife, a 2-year-old, and a 3-month-old, and that driving an hour to Ashland or Klamath Falls for dinner wasn't ideal. We hurried back to the cabin, got ready, and returned around 7:35 PM, only to be immediately told they couldn't seat us because they were too busy and had a large party. My question was simple: Why wasn't I told that when I specifically came in earlier to ask? Had they explained the situation, I would have gladly come sooner. After asking to speak with a manager, who never actually came out, we were suddenly able to be seated. Once inside, there were several empty tables available, which made the whole situation even more confusing. Our server seemed annoyed from the moment we sat down. We decided to order our food to go instead of dining in, and even that seemed to bother him. When I politely provided feedback about the miscommunication, his response was essentially, "Well, we got you seated, didn't we?" That completely missed the point. The issue wasn't whether we eventually got a table. The issue was being given incorrect information and then nearly being turned away despite arriving before the stated seating cutoff. The next morning, we discovered mice had chewed through snacks we had left on the kitchen counter overnight. There are no cabinets available to store food. When I reported it, the manager apologized and explained that even the cabin she lives in on-site has mice because they're in the forest. While that explanation makes sense, it didn't make my wife feel any better with a 3-month-old baby sleeping in the cabin. The second day, pizza was available for lunch and was actually very good. The older gentleman working there was friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, when we returned around 6 PM for dinner, pizza was sold out again. My wife then tried ordering dinner to go from the lodge and was given a completely different takeout menu that excluded many of the better dinner options, including items we had ordered to go the night before. When she asked if she could order from the regular dinner menu, she was told absolutely not. The inconsistency made no sense. At that point, we'd had enough. Between the restaurant issues, the mice, and the overall lack of customer service, we decided to cut our trip short and leave a day early. The lake and beach are beautiful and have the potential to make this a great family destination. Unfortunately, poor communication, inconsistent service, restaurant issues, and mice in the cabins overshadowed what could have been a wonderful stay. Mice may be part of being in the woods, but regular preventative pest control inside the cabins would go a long way toward making guests feel more comfortable.

First and foremost, Marshal and Suzie are fantastic hosts. They are very knowledgeable about the critters that frequent the ranch and will happily assist with the best spots and methods to bird watch or fish. Marshal is most willing to share the specifics of fishing gear, flies to use and techniques to fish these waters. Suzie is very responsive to whatever you might need at the cabin and keeps them in a condition that makes you think she is expecting a best friend to come visit. In short, these two love what the do and it shows! Second, the cabin we stayed at is super cool and rustic yet very comfortable and equipped with all that you need. There are games, books and fun antiques to check out. Just bring your food and drinks and you'll be set. The cabin is perfectly situated with an unobstructed view of the river. The front porch is a perfect place to relax. Watch the fish rolling on the surface of the water or (if you sit still) the birds coming and going from the bird houses mounted on the front of the cabin or out in the lawn. Finally, the setting is just what you would expect from a top-shelf lodge. The aspens and evergreens are abundant with lots of places to wander about, bird watch or just lay back and watch the clouds pass overhead. We celebrated my 60th birthday at Lonesome Duck. It was a fantastic experience and we strongly recommend it to anyone looking for this type of getaway.

Close enough to highway to make getting there (Medford airport is an hour and a half drive), and other places in southern and central Oregon easy, yet, far enough off the main highway, about a mile on a gravel road, for seclusion and that "out in the woods" feeling. Crater Lake is 30 minutes away. The Lava Caves south of Klamath Falls (worth the trip) are only an hour. Great wine tasting in Ashland is a little more than an hour and a half. Head north to Bend and the higher elevations for a day trip. Any direction you go you will be in the middle of some of the most breathtaking scenery you can imagine. Or you can just hang out on the ranch for some of the best fishing, canoeing, kayaking, or hiking you could ask for. There is also a really great outdoor logging museum and small gauge railroad just minutes from the ranch. Stargazing at night on the ranch is spectacular with light pollution at a minimum. The cabin itself is perfect. Just a hundred feet from the river, it has tasteful rustic decor, comfortable furnishings (beds are great), and all that you need to cook indoors or grill outdoors. Be sure to do your grocery shopping in Medford or Klamath as there is only a convenience store at the gas station down the road. The little town of Chiloquin has very few shopping/eating amenities. Lots of windows facing the river in case you get tired of sitting on the porch (which we never did). Be ready to see lots of birds (ducks included), river otters, beaver and if you stand in the water early in the morning or at dusk you will catch a glimpse of native trout and bass. We saw deer on our three morning walks and on all of our road trips off the ranch. Finally, you couldn't ask for a better host than Steve. From the time you "check-in" (he actually just meets you at your cabin to say hello and walk you through), to the cordial check-out (again he will come to you), he will take care of any of your needs or just leave you to enjoy your "home" and awesome surroundings. We highly recommend spending some time with your family on the ranch and in one of their cabins. We will definitely be going back,

What a beautiful national park!…read more Came here on a day where the weather changed between partly cloudy/sunny and snowy/rainy. The snowy surroundings created a nice contrast against the very deep blue color of the lake. In the early morning, it was very peaceful. There were not many people around, likely because of weather. The Steel Visitor Center's film was excellent to get a sense of the geology and history of the park. The lodge also offered an excellent meal with a partial view of the lake. Because of the snow, we were not able to go on the Rim Drive or hike the trails. I would imagine all the views would have been beautiful. The Cleetwood Cove trail down to the lake is closed for 3 summers, through 2028. If weather is of any question, the NPS website has up-to-date information about the weather, including webcams of several spots in the park.

Surprisingly not busy for memorial day weekend although we started early on a sunday morning and a lot of the park was still closed for the season, there was snow! My 3 year old was very pleased. We purchased the annual national park pass at the front gate, sad to hear that the national park staff keeps being reduced and scary to know that there's only *one* emergency ranger on staff currently so please follow the rules folks! Lot's of cute shops for goodies and campgrounds along the way. We stayed an hour away but the drive felt fast and scenic. A nice breath of fresh air. The large parking lot seemed to fill up fast to see the lake, but super close so very accessible. A few hikes were open but honestly just sitting and admiring the lake does the trick. Would love to come back and visit when more of the park is open!

We were here visiting family and had already planned a trip to Crater Lake. Even though it wasn't raging and spectacular it's a neat place to stop and check out this unnatural event. Since there hadn't been rain in awhile it was pretty mild (see pics), but if you can time it right and there has been rain for a few (or more) days it becomes much more glorious. Nice little stop area that is kept clean and has a couple nice vantage points for viewing. If you're in the area this should make your list of nature oriented things to do, especially if you are already heading up the North Umpqua for a day of site seeing.

We went to Oregon to spend Thanksgiving w/ his Mom and this little scenic stop happened to be the destination that Kevin wanted to take me to. The weather was cold so my kiddo stayed in the car w/ his Mom... Kevin and I explored alongside the rivers a few minutes just to be in awe w/ nature and of course, take a few pictures. It was certainly breathtaking and I had a great vacation.

August 31, 2025 - Tiller, Oregon…read more The road to the waterfall is a 4-mile drive on a narrow Forest Service Road (NF 6530) off of OR-230. There is a sign that directs you to the small parking lot. From the parking lot, reaching the waterfall is an easy half-mile walk through the forest, with a few switchbacks along the way. The trail is well cared for, dogs are welcome on leash, and the peaceful beauty of the woods made the journey every bit as rewarding as the falls. Although, we had been warned about the mosquitos in the area, they were not an issue at all when we were there. Well worth the slight detour on your way to Crater Lake, Diamond Lake or the Rogue River Gorge.

Galesville Reservoir is a beautiful water storage area near Azalea, Oregon. It is part of the Upper…read moreCow Creek Watershed and the reservoir is 640 acres. The dam produces electricity by hydropower for the area. The first turnoff is to the campground and the second to the Day Use area and boat ramps. The day use has parking, a playground, picnic area, and pavilion. The park host is near the day use area, as well as The Chief Miwaleta Campground provides cabins for rental, a tent camping and 20 full hookups and 11 non-hookups and 1 group site for RVs. There are two boat ramps (one with two lanes and one primitive ramp) with parking for the reservoir and is a popular area for fishing. Though, the reservoir has a higher-than-allowed level of mercury as described by the Clean Water Act. The cause may be several historic mining claims above the reservoir exist, such as the Red Cloud Mine, which was established to extract mercury from veins of cinnabar. There is information on and recommendations for eating fish on the Oregon.gov website. I do recommend going to the Galesville Reservoir, either for camping or just using the day use area. It's a beautiful place to spend the day or longer.
