All too often, you'll get a kayak whose foot-pedals no longer work or vests that are faded or showing signs of wear and tear, but everything looked great. We had a wonderful time exploring the coves and inlets of coastal Maine knowing that our equipment was, well, ship-shape. Porta potties conveniently on the way to the lake. They have push trailers to get the boats down. The lake was beyond gorgeous. The price was set right $38 for 3 hours. This is the perfect activity to experience Maine. So where this company really shined was the staff going over and beyond for our family today. I had the tragic luck of dropping the rental car keys into the lake a mile out from the launch site. I could not see the keys in the dark water. I luckily had my phone on me and the attendant was quick to help. He said they have a rescue boat and they could come and help. The owner of the company and his employee Andy came in a motor boat to save the day. Andy offered to jump into the cold water and try to find my keys. It was too dark for him to see very far in front of him with the googles but I was beyond appreciative for his efforts. My panic set in as I was now stranded in the middle of nowhere with two kids and no idea what to do. They patiently waited for me to contact the rental company to figure out next steps. They offered to pull the canoe back to the front so we could figure out our rental situation. When we got back Andy pulled our canoe in, which usually you have to bring in your own boat. Again, over and beyond. Later, the tow company let us into our vehicle to get our personal items but I still had no way back. I downloaded Uber but I could not find a ride. I asked the tow driver if he could drive us and he said he wasn't going that way. The owner of National Park Canoe offered to drive us himself about 20 mins back to our motel and saved our day again. I could not appreciate these Angels more. Not only are you receiving a great experience at National Park Canoe; you are supporting a small business that has warm, kind, generous souls that deserve your business. I cannot thank these men enough for helping in any manner they could think of. Thank you thank you. If we ever come back to Maine we will certainly be back and I recommend this company whole heartedly.

In August we received the notice that our pacing registration was approved. But let me back up for for those of you who don't know what pacing is. The goal of a pacer is to run consistent mile splits and finish in the assigned goal time. For instance, a 3:30 marathon pacer would try to run consistent miles in 8:01 minutes and complete the race in 3hours 30 minutes. In addition to this added responsibility, the pacer will answer questions through out the race, offer strategies at the beginning of the race, and assist with general moral of their group by providing motivation as well as distractions from the difficulties of the race. Nicole and I volunteered to pace the 3:45 and 5:30 running groups, respectively. Why are pacers important? Runners use pacers to assist with Boston Marathon qualification, and help reduce the variability of their own pacing. When you have someone who can run consistent mile splits, it takes the guess work out of worrying what effort is required for the goal time because all you have to do is follow the pacer to meet the goal time. Incidentally, Boston Marathon qualification varies by age group. A perk of pacing a race is that your registration fee is waived and the racing swag bag is also free. Back to the MDI, which started promptly at 8am, on Main Street in Bar Harbor, Maine, Sunday October 16th. As a pacer I was instructed to be there 45 minutes prior to gun-time with my 3:45 sign and talk to runners who would be joining me. This part is actually quite fun. After the Star Spangled Banner was sung, there was a two minute wait before a cannon was fired to signal the start of the race! And then we were off! The course was point to point with rolling hills throughout, and would shuttle runners back to the finish using school busses. The temperature was 44 degrees and slightly overcast. Perfect running weather. Aid stations served Gatorade and water every second mile, as well as gels after mile 16. The fall foliage was spectacular as were the views over the harbor. At about mile 15-16 some of the boats anchored near the shore were using loud speakers and horns to cheer the runners on! Very cool. The first half of the race was easy breezy and the second half got harder as he hills kept coming. We were hitting each of the splits with less than 1 minute of difference. Unfortunately, by 18 miles most of my group could not keep up with the pace. Charles, however, did hang on and was admirable until the last mile. His quads were busted from a previous weekend marathon in Hartford, CT and his down hill running suffered---the last mile was all downhill. He was 1 minute behind me at the finish. As I crossed the finish my chip time registered 3:44:44 and the clock time was 3:44:59. Not bad considering goal was 3:45:00! I was pleased with the effort and had several runners thank me for keeping a steady pace. Nicole also finished her goal time of 5:30 and brought with her a small contingent of runners. We compared notes after the race and also most of the people following the 5:30 group were also finding it too hard to keep up after mile marker 18. I highly recommend MDI for your Maine race, if you have not already done it.

I took the Yoga (wonderful), Piyo (which kicks your butt) and TRX (which should stand for; tough, rough and xscuse me while I scream). The instructors are very helpful. I bought the 10 class card and I love going to all the classes.
