I purchased my tickets through the online portal about a month before our trip to Norway. I don't believe you really have to do this because the line for ticket buying is pretty short and there are kiosks along the way inside to buy tickets. Also, if you happened to be in the line to buy tickets, you just enter afterwards, instead of waiting in the prepaid ticket line, it's kind of a cheat. At least that's what we observed. The line for the prepaid tickets was extremely long, going down the block for a bit but it did move fast. We got into line around 235 pm and we ready for the funicular around 3pm. For the length of the line, I thought this moved very fast. When you enter the gates to the funicular, be aware of the people counter. It counts down the amount of people that can enter. So if you're a party of 5 people and it says only 3 more can enter, you will be split up if you enter. There are like 5 gates so you have to pay attention if you want to stay with your party. There were MANY people who did not seem to understand this and started yelling at or crying to the kids working the line. There is nothing they can do, it's a safety issue and you will have to meet your party at the top of the mountain. Also, the last lane (most left handed) is for disabled people or people with strollers. It's kind of a d*ck move to go to that shorter line if you aren't one of these people or in a party with one. But karma hits hard and if you do try this little sneak, you'll probably end up waiting even longer because the special car it leads to has a small capacity and that line moves slow. Other than that, this funicular is a nice ride up and down the mountain, with plenty of spectacular views and cute moments to see. read more

A nice ride up to a beautiful view. We were lucky to have a rain free stretch of the day in Bergen to do this trip. I bought the tickets online and avoided a line. We arrived and immediately went through to board the next car. It runs frequently so no real wait. We were also lucky to avoid the earlier crush of cruise ship passengers. The views are great and you can hike down if you want but we rode round trip. There is a nice restaurant at the top too. Price was typical of Norway! read more

After a nearby breakfast, we walked over around 11am on a Thursday in August. We quickly bought tickets using the kiosk and were on the cable car within minutes. There was a nice little park for the little ones and some short walking trails. We petted the goats and took lots of great pics. There are a couple of small shops and a café as well at the top. Quick, easy, and open around good hours of the day. It is relatively cheap at 12-14 USD at the time. They do not take American Express. Actually a lot of places in Norway do not take American Express. Waiting for the railway wasn't too bad. the view inside the railway isnt that great so just pick a seat. No good photos really inside the train. When you get to the top, thats the view you want. There are a lot of seating or possible seating areas around the place. In the summer, I can see it has a chilling spot. During the winter, staying up there with high winds and low temperatures felt like icicles to the face. I only stayed up there for probably 10 minutes. Then I went back down. There is a cafe at the top and a nice restaurant as well. You can order the tickets to stop at the midpoint and you can hike up. That looks much more doable than hiking from the bottom up. It has a lot of twist and turns. read more

If in Bergen, definitely do this. It is a nice quick Funicular ride to the top of Mount Fløyen which great views. There is a restaurant which has a decent menu of food as well as an outside patio bar with snacks. There are plenty of hiking trails around and you probably will see several of the mountain goats hanging around, some may let you pet/scratch them. You can ride up and hike down if you have the time (maybe next visit for us). read more

We got here first thing in the morning to beat the crowds & tour groups. It cost about $15 pp. Besides the endless views of the city & harbor tip here is a large gift shop , restaurant, cafe, play area, and marked hiking trails. What a magical place!! The Fløibanen funicular in Bergen is one of Norway's best-known and most visited attractions. The journey up to Fløyen (320 m above sea level) takes about 5-8 minutes. It was super easy to get tickets via the website or app so that one does not have to wait in a long line. You just can at the gates to the vehicle and you get right on. They have two running at once so you are up at the top in no time. The viewpoint for photos is amazing and you see the whole city and various harbors. Could even see my ship, the Norwegian Prima, from the top. There are various eateries, shops, facilities, and so so many paths and lakes. My mother and I probably spent about 3 hours, but wish we had longer. They even have a place to glamp. If you don't take the funicular, you can walk but you must be in great shape. 7/5/2024- there are two lines to enter then merge into one line. Far left lane are those buying tickets or have the Bergen Pass to buy tickets at 50% off for $9 US Donald or shout 90 NOK. Far right line is prepaid tickets. Very few seats to sit on the ride up. Very nice views. Patent of food and drinks and walking up here to make it a 3-4 hour day. We ere up there for just about an hour going very slowly. Do not feed the goats up here. Or took only about 5 minutes to go up. They told us about 9 minutes. When you have less than half a day to explore Bergen, you need to be rather disciplined about your sightseeing. At least that's what the anal-retentive side said to me in private, and I knew riding this funicular was on the top of the list. You may ask why, and I would probably raise one eyebrow and clapback "The view, of course." Fortunately, our hotel was just five minutes away from the lower terminus where we were thrilled to find there was no queue of tourists. We paid our 150 NOK round-trip tickets (about $15.40 in US dollars) and were able to get backward-facing seats where we could see the scenic view rising in front of us behinds the heads of the other passengers. The cars have stepped floors and open windows as they climb almost a thousand feet against the relatively steep slope of Mount Floyen. The ride took about eight minutes as it made two intermediate stops for locals who actually use the funicular as a commuter train (...how frustrating that must be for them during peak tourist season.) Once we arrived at the upper terminus, we first took notice of the expansive viewing terraces which afford spectacular views of Bergen around its harbor (photo: https://bit.ly/3oVO0RZ). As we walked around the terraces, we began to realize how big the city was as it's Norway's largest city next to Oslo. Once we took most of our photos, we noticed there was a restaurant, a cafe, a souvenir shop, and a playground, which frankly turned the area into more of an amusement park. Jamie was intrigued by signs to a nearby lake which was a few minutes stroll away in the woods. There wasn't much to the lake except a flurry of gnats, so we didn't stay long. Even though the funicular was more crowded going down, the ride back didn't take any longer than the ride up. I have to credit the operating company (Fløibanen AS) for a smooth operation. This is a great way to get a quick taste of Bergen - certainly recommend if you only have a day or two to explore. You take a funicular train up a steep mountain for a birds-eye view of the city and harbor. Hopefully you will hit it on a clear day - it was pretty overcast when I went, so it was hit or miss on what you could see. Either way, the train itself was a fun experience. At the top there is a restaurant, snack bar, store, and some walking trails/areas to explore. All in all, I would say allow 2 hours to take it all in. read more

This is probably the top attraction in Bergen--and for good reason! On a clear day the view on top of Mt. Floen is majestic and awe-inspiring as one looks down onto medieval-like rooftops, gliding birds, and cruise ships and other watercraft plying through the ocean or a fjord below. In my experience this view was only rivaled by that on top of Table Mountain in Capetown, South Africa after exiting the cable car that ascended there. Unlike a swaying cable car, the Floibanen clings to and slides up the mountain more like a train on a steep track for most of the way. Besides great views, on top one is also likely to meet a few goats roaming free--and many other human visitors. The line to get tickets from the ticket office below took 1 hrour and 15 minutes--although we were on top 21 minutes after our purchase. At 125 Norwegian Kroners (about 12.50 U.S. dollars) for a round-trip adult ticket, and unlimited time on top, the price is very reasonable. But I would definitely recommend purchasing tickets on the Internet in advance or at Bergen's tourist information office, if you can find it, which we could not. A ship's offered shore excursion here is overpriced except for the convenience of getting to and up the Floibanen quickly. It also took our taxi driver on the way back four tries to find the right ship (Fortunately, he shut off the meter after the first attempt). Walking to the Floibanen from the cruise terminal is also a nice leisurely stroll that will pass right into the famed Fish Market and historical wharf houses about two long blocks away. The morning's catch is interesting to look at, and all fish are cooked fresh to order here, We found this to be a nice bonus on our way back from the Floibanen. read more

Rowling) BEWITCHA IN A MINUTE When not roaming the bridges, mountains, and streets of Norway, trolls, invisible witches, and goats alike converge atop Mt. Fløyen at a magical spot lording over the town of Bergen. But how do they get there? The Funicular, of course! Mount Fløyen puts the "icular" in Funicular...or maybe just the "fun". To find the Funicular, look for hidden troll føøtprints leading from the fish market downtown to a the base of Mount Fløyen...or just a long line of people snaking down Vetrlidsallmenningen Street. There you will see a cute white building displaying a "Fløibanen" sign. It is within walking distance from downtown; if a troll with his bitty legs can make it by foot, so can you! Expect to spend a half hour to an hour in the queue. You can skip the funicular and the line if you prefer by hiking about three miles up the hillside instead. Uffda! But the funicular ride will save you time and energy, lasting about 5-8 minutes, and ushering you to a platform at the top of Mt. Fløyen that presents a stunning panoramic scene of Bergen and its surrounding fjords and mountains. ROCK 'N' TROLL After taking in the view, head over to the Fløistuen shop and restaurant for souvenirs and local food, to use the restrooms, and to load up your water bottle at a free refill station. Once you've recharged with food and drink, unleash your inner Viking or Shieldmaiden to raid the network of hiking trails through an enchanted troll forest with sinister trees and cliffs (there might be an Iron Throne in there as well!) Caution signs warn of witches and trolls for those who make it alive past the giant troll guarding the kids' playground next to the Fløistuen shop. Take the warnings seriously! HERE I GOAT AGAIN ON MY OWN Beyond the playground you'll find a hiking loop where friendly Cashmere goats snack on vegetation and pose like seasoned models on the goatwalk. Don't feed them, but do learn their names (mugshots found by the viewing platform) and scratch their little foreheads. They will thank you with a smile! We only encountered one gruffy goat who grunted at us while rolling his eyes. Baaaaad goat! There, now you've successfully evaded all the mystical creatures in the forest, and are ready to return to the streets of Bergen by riding one of two funicular cars back down along with 100 other passengers, or hiking as we did down one of several steep forest paths. 'Ello chaps! Floibanen is a funicular railway in Bergen that whisks visitors to the peaks of a hillside, giving you spectacular sweeping views of the City and harbor. You'll see this spot touted in every tourist brochure and list of recommendations: for a reason. It's a must do in a tiny town of Bergen. At approximately $15 USD round trip, it's a great cost. Takes 5 to 10 minutes in each direction, and is quite enjoyable - even for those who may not enjoy heights. At the top of the hillside you'll find a few shops and restaurants, plus endless walking trails. Trams run every 10 minutes from early in the morning until 11 p.m. (when we were there). There are no specific times to go up or back so you have a lot of freedom. You can go up and stay for an hour, a few hours, all day, whatever you'd like. We loved this funicular ride up to Mt. Floyen. The line when we went was not long and as soon as we knew it we were at the top! The views are spectacular. Keep in mind it's a little cooler up at the top. You can get tickets for one way or round trip. We did the one way and hiked down. Keep in mind if you do this it's kind of low grade steep the whole way. There are even goats you will see. At some spots you even walk through the town right next to people's houses. The signs are ample but at some points you were questioning which way to go. Luckily everyone here is so nice and helpful. When you get near the bottom there's a bunch of stairs and finally you emerge from where you started. Then you sit down, reflect, and go find a place for an expensive pint! read more

Floibanen take me away! Well, at least take me on a 6 minute ride up to the top of Bergen for the most breathtaking view of the city. For around $11-$12 USD you can take their beautiful funicular up through the town onto the top where you'll be able to see al over Bergen (if its not raining or cloudy). The key is to time it right with the weather and tourists. The funicular runs every 15 minutes so you have plenty of options getting up and back. You'll notice it stops along the way as locals use it to get back and forth which is really cool. I recommend sitting in the very front or the very back if you're trying to take photos. The catch is, do you want it to be swamped with people or super clear skies? When I had gone it was a little cloudy in the morning and it was absolutely gorgeous without having to deal with anyone else really being up there. And it was so quiet that I actually rode in the funicular all by myself. Some of the following carts were jam packed with people so it's a give and take. Up top besides the views there is a gift shop, a restaurant, and a giant troll to get a photo with. It's a really fun thing to do in the city. Nowhere else will you see anything like this. It's really organized. It's clean. It's relatively cheap and you'll be absolutely mesmerized by how stunning the city is when you're looking over top of it. Definitely one of the things to do in Bergen. Bergen is a pretty small city with, imo, not much to do within city center. City center has shopping, some museums, and defiantly plenty to eat. Nature is not too far-- that is Fløibanen and Fløyfjellet both are not too far away. My friends and I both paid 45 NOK to ride the Fløibanen up to the top of Mt. Fløyen, one of the many hills/peaks in the Bergen area, a few days ago. Definitely worth every krone getting up there via this tram. Yes, you can definitely walk up to the top of Mt. Fløyen, which happens to be pretty steep and per google, would take about an hour's time from Bryggen. My friends and I were pretty lazy, so we opted for the tram route instead. The tram ride was similar to the tram ride at Victoria Peak in Hong Kong, e.g. Steep train ride with awesome and beautiful views of the city. The Fløibanen was definitely very cool since you got to see the beautiful views of Bergen city and its surrounding fjords. As they say in Norwegian, den var mye dejlig! At the top of the Mt. Fløyen you can see the entire city, weather permitting of course. Definitely a great selfie opportunity. Since it rains a lot in Bergen, and more so at higher elevations, I'd recommend a rain jacket or umbrella. There are also playgrounds for kids, including a cute troll theme kid park. My friends and I frolicked in the troll park, which was pretty cool. Definitely recommended, at least on the way up. My friends opted to walk the way down, which took about 45 minutes with a few minutes rest period. Have fun! read more

Floibanen Funicular is one of the most popular attraction for tourists when visiting Bergen. Right next to the Fish Markets, I will suggest have lunch there and then head over to avoid the crowds, especially when the cruise ships are in town. 80 Nok for a return trip... which is really reasonable or you can just go one way up to the top for 40 Nok and enjoy the beautiful view,.,. and then take the scenic hiking trail back down. There are also playground, souvenirs shops, restaurants and a little tiny shop if you want some ice cream or treats. read more

When you are in Norway, you must stay in Bergen for at least 3 days minimum. We where there for 4 days. Since our visit was quick, we opted to fly booking with Norwegian air and we scored because it was a new airplane - oh! It smelled so good. Other transportation options are: 1. Driving - own you own car or rent. It's about 8-10 hour drive; 2. Take the train which is scenic and this is about 8 hours. The flight was quick, about 50 minutes. When you arrive, there are tic booths to purchase a bus ticket round trip into center of town for $22.00 USD. You can find a kiosk outside of the airport. Our luxury bus dropped us off about 1 block from our Airbnb. I found a place which was key being centrally located since we walked everywhere in rain, sunshine or wind. Nothing was going to stop us. We went to the top of Mt. Floyen taking the funicular and arrived about 1 hour before sunset. November my dear yelp friends, it was super windy and cold!. I wore a long down jacket parka, had my silk thermals on, wrapped my wool pashmina around my neck and had a wool beanie on and my hoodie. I was still cold. At any rate, as we waited for the sun to dip because I had to get some epic shots of the the famous Bergen harbor. We met some goats, ate famous Norwegian chocolate by Freia and enjoyed leisurely walking and photographing. Lots of tourist Even on this cold day - and I highly suggest being patient with others to get a photo or selfie. It's worth the wait. It was a fun and memorable experience. You must go here. You can walk to this point, hike up the steep mountain or take the funicular. We came back here another time, this time hiked up and back down. So much to see and worth every breathe. This is a no-brainer if you're in Bergen. If you have the Bergen card it's a must as well since it's included for free on your card. (In fact, just get a Bergen card. They include your transit as well and were an affordable deal. Hit the aquarium as well and it's more than paid for itself.)There are some awesome views to be had up top, even on a drizzly, wet and cold day. Up at the top you can hike out to the lake, rent bikes and the kids can play on the playground. It's worth spending a few hours exploring. Be sure to get the front seat either on your way up or down. I'd like to understand why you can't take the picture of the witch and why would anyone post the sign there only in the dark could you see and during the day time, all you see is the witch so you take the photo without reading the sign? Or I'm just not good at following directions. I don't like directions. Therefore, when the hotel gave me a map I took my own route which is to turn left at the big Starbuck. They said, "you'd see the funicular. Just start climbing." My trail running shoes need to get some miles in so off I went. Where I'm from, we don't see fall colors. The air was crisp and the leaves are golden. I think I've arrived in the garden of eden and this was heaven on earth. Trail runners' ultimate wet dream. Zig zap along the trail path, one could pack more than 3 km before reaching the top, and if you turn left you can connect the two mountains. So I was told by this really good looking Norwegian man, who turned out to a be a runner himself and was also first time on this trail. He spoke flawless British English. Along the way you get smiling Scandinavian men complimenting your strides, or simply they were flirting. But whatever the reason is, it makes you stride further and maintains better posture when admired. Think you were just imagining this all up? Then another man in jogging attire flashes his bright smile at you and all of sudden you are not tired and know you were not making this all up. Note to bay area female trail runners, consider packing your shoes and fly to Bergen, Norway. Once at the top it was clearly no longer just for trail runners. This is for tourists to take the mandatory city shots from the mountain top. I learned later a close friend had attended his best friend's wedding here at this very spot. I wrote to him, "why did you move back to the U.S.? If I were you, I'd stayed in Norway." I don't think he ever got back to me with an answer. Perhaps he knew I was right. I think he'd be happier in this part of the world than San Francisco, just a hunch. Meanwhile, I found there was a cafe, a place to rent a mountain bike, a nice bathroom, and several private spots for people to make out, and in general, just a ton of people soaking in this incredible view. Think Santorini, but with a lot more trees nearby and fjords afar. I had ridden the funicular up, but it's boring and it's not really a great way to see the mountain. My personal favorite is to take the left hand side of the trails which gave you an option to either run up in a straight line or a curve that takes you to a longer path. You can do it during the day or be a real local, do it in the evening where the air is crisp and tourists have gone back. Net net. Run up and run down Mount Floyen. And try morning, evening and late at night. And follow the sign. Don't take picture of the witch, even though you don't know why... read more

Big disappointment here. They cram as many people as possible in. You can't see Bergen. You can see the many people shoving cameras in your view trying to film the trip. You cannot sit anywhere. It stops constantly on the way up. We walked down from the top and got the views we wanted. read more

What's not to be a fan of? For 85kr (10USD) you receive a round trip ticket that will take you to the last stop at the top of Flöyen. The panoramic views are spectacular, even on the common rainy days in Bergen. If you get to the top and the city is blocked by clouds be patient! Spend some time enjoying the hiking trails and green space and ride out the clouds, they can blow over quickly! For those days with better weather you can opt for a one way ticket and hike back down, as well as several other ticket options depending on how you want to spend your day. The restaurant and part of the park at the top were closed for renovations during my visit so I can't speak to them. There's a small gift shop with your average tourist items: flags, mugs, pins, etc. Not really my thing but if you're in to knick-knacks you can pick them up during your visit. read more
