What a wonderful way to see Norway!! Especially when part of the Norway In a Nutshell tour

We took the cable car up to Ulriken and then hiked Vidden to Floyen and took the cable car back down. The views at the top are great, but they really can't compare to the views along Vidden while hiking. We saw a lot of sheep along the trail too! The trail wasn't very well marked at the very beginning near Ulriken and we went the wrong way for a bit. Once we got past the first part and on the right path, the trail was very well marked the rest of the way. The hike was about 8 miles, but we ended up hiking closer to 10 with our getting lost at the beginning. The trail wasn't that difficult. It was mostly flat with just a little up and down, but it was so wet. By halfway through the hike we gave up on trying to keep our feet dry and just gave in to the fact that they were going to be soggy for the rest of the hike. The views were spectacular the entire time and I would highly recommend the hike! Make sure to give yourself enough time. It took us about 7 hours with getting lost for about an hour. We got to Floyen right as the sun was setting which was a great view. read more

We had a single day in Bergen on our trip, and half of it was gobbled up by fjord cruising. With our options limited, my wife looked at a train car traveling up a mountain and said, "Let's go there." The single track means a bit of a wait. PROTIP: Prepaying for your ticket at the Tourist Information Center near the Fish Market will save you from having to buy one at the gate and getting in two lines. What happened next can be best described as herding cattle. A throng of people slowly making their way to the funicular and packing in for the slow ascent to the top. But then you get there. Bergen on a clear day may be one of the most picturesque locations in the world. The city wraps itself around the coast of the fjord, with houses crashing up against the mountains like waves. A camera is mandatory. We dined at a hot dog stand that was out of regular hot dogs, but that shouldn't affect this review. We also got softis before heading back down. Get softis. This is a must visit when you're in the area. read more

Wonderful views. I took quite a long hike up the Stoltzekleiven, up to Rundemanen, and over to Floyen. Only about 6 miles, but those steps had been brutal and I was ready to take a load off. The wait wasn't long to go down, and the view was lovely, however there were mad amounts of people waiting to go up. It wouldn't be worth that wait. Just walk if you can! The views are pretty wonderful. It's probably only about 40 minutes up. read more

This is more of a review for Fløyen than the funicular but they don't have a Fløyen page. But Floyen is fantastic and I would definitely recommend it to anyone that is coming to Bergen I hiked the Vidden path between Floyen and Ulriken and I can tell you without a doubt that the Floyen side definitely was much more beautiful with regards to views of Bergen and the surrounding mountains. There are also a ton of mini hikes that you can do (maps courtesy of Visit Bergen). The view is simply spectacular and something that I think you can't miss while you're in the area. The funicular isn't too expensive (relative to Ulriken, which is 90 NOK one way) but I would actually recommend that you hike it up because it's only a 1.5-2 hour hike, you don't need to be super fit or anything to pull it off, and the views and the lakes and everything you see on the way there makes it extremely worth it. tldr; you have to go to Floyen if you're in Bergen. it's a must. read more

Funicular ride is a great way to get a bird's eye view of Bergen. There is a cafe and gift shop.There are hiking trails atop the mountain. Bike rentals and guided tours available. Guides not needed for nearby hikes / managed ok my own. Possible to climb/descend maintain by foot. Uf you are lazy like me, take funicular up and walk down. The favorite part of my trip was taking the funicular to the top of Mt. Floyen. The view is amazing and could stare out at the fjords for hours. So.....that's exactly what we did! We ordered a few snacks and a bottle of wine. It was summer time so once on our second bottle of wine we realized it was almost 11pm and the sun was just starting its descent. Good: - the size of the queue fluctuates. I don't think it's a matter of getting there early or not early. We spent some time watching the line while having lunch at a nearby cafe and the giant queues seem to be a function of tour groups arriving. The funicular departs every 15 minutes so the crowds dissapate pretty quickly. Get your ticket online to go straight to the turnstiles, no wait. - really amazing views, basically echoing what everyone else has said. - the paths that criscross the top of the mountain are well maintained and marked. Very walkable. Plan to spend some time exploring and seeing the views from different vantage points. - soft serve ice cream at the top of the hill Not so good: - the trains do get crowded. But, since they depart every 15 mins, you can just wait for the next train if you want to snag a good spot. - the coordination in the snack shop is pretty terrible. It's not clear which cashier to line up in front of. The staff seem to jump back and forth between them, especially when it's busy, leaving some confused guests in lines that are no longer being served. For us, we got to the front of line #1 only to be told by the staffperson that we had to move to the other line because she had something important to do (restock the soup pot). So we took our place at the back of line #2 and waited there till we were 2nd in line....only to witness another staffperson re-open line #1. Afterwards, I watched this happen a few more times! read more

The easiest way to go up a mountain. It's 85 NOK for a roundtrip ride and I recommend coming early (before 11am) to avoid crowds and lines. I signed up for the "guided hiking" which might be the single most overpriced item in Norway but overall enjoyable. PS, you can get a waffle at the top for only 25 NOK! read more

This is a great fairly quick thing to do in Bergen. Within a few minutes,you are atop a mountain with beautiful views. The cost round trip is 95NOK which is 2NOK less than the sugar free coke I had earlier. read more

Other than the long lines and fighting tourists who can't handle lines, the train up to the mountains above Bergen from the harbor is awesome. The ride up is fairly short but impressive with a sharp ascent and views over the town as you go up. At the top is an incredible viewpoint directly above the city with views of the town and the water. It's also a good starting point for a hike, bike ride, or just a walk back down to town. There are also cafes and facilities at the top. Definitely buy tickets online beforehand to avoid the long ticket lines. read more

Unless you have time for some hiking, there isn't much to do once you get up to the top of Fløyen, but it's absolutely worth coming up just to enjoy the view. It's one of those "things" so associated with the city - how do you come here without doing it? The view is very nice, and although apparently not as good as it is from the top of Mt. Ulriken, it's also much easier to get to by foot from the city center. Also worth mentioning, the top cable car stop is not the highest point on the mountain - that's another kilometer uphill and about 100 meters higher. I didn't have the time for hiking, but there is a large network of trails available behind the viewing platform, and I assume one of them would take you to this higher point. I do know there's a trail that would take you to Ulriken, but it's several hours worth of hiking (although it would be a pretty awesome round trip). The cars run every 15 minutes unless it's busy, in which case they run continuously This is really nice - points to them for figuring out they would be able to make more money *and* keep tourists happy by not making them wait. read more

The Funicular will get you to the top of the Floyen in about 3 minutes, and this review is probably more about the Floyen than the Funicular, so there. The view from the Funicular is quite nice, but pales in comparison to the view from the top. You can see for miles. There's a small shop and lunch place, as well as viewery at the top of the ride, but the real gem is being able to go for a hike afterwards. My wife and I hiked and hiked and hiked, and reached the top. Many people continued on, but we turned around as I was fighting a cold. The scenery is amazing, and there's thousands of little trails and paths to go down. I recommend getting a map from Visit Bergen as the one at the top of the ride is fairly lacking. read more

You take a steep inclined train to the top, and are rewarded with an amazing view over the city and all of the surroundings. I wound recommend going on a clear day, but of course given the weather the odds are not in your favor of this. But even on the cloudy day that we went, you will still have great visibility. Once you are up top, there are some good gravel hiking trails into the pine forest. We took one of these for a nice walk, it was a little quieter, since it seemed like many of the visitors don't venture back into the woods. There was a bathroom in the restaurant at the top, and a gift shop as well. read more

If the day is clear, take advantage and go to one of the mountain views. Floyen is the closest to the center and it is walking distance to any hotel around the city. The view is spectacular. If you are feeling adventurous and have the time and love to exercise, you can hike up or down or both. It will save you some cash. read more

One of the best experiences in Bergen. Easy to get tickets on the spot. You can choose to pick one way on the flobinanen and hike back to town square or get two way tickets. On the flobinanen (?cable car) try to sit either in the front or the back. The views on the way up and back down are amazing. Once we got up to Mount Floyen, we walked around a couple of the hiking trails. They have several signs everywhere so you won't get lost. They have toilets free of charge as well. On the way to the hiking trails, we saw a small hut with cute Norwegian goats. The views from up here are amazing. My husband and I loved it. Went around sunset and it was worth it. Their last transport back is at 11PM. They also have a restaurant but we did not eat here. We definitely recommend this place if you are in bergen!! read more

Best avoid the times when cruise ships are in, frightfully long lines. But a nice little funicular ride up the hill and great views.

This is a short ride up the steep Mount Fløyen in fact only takes approx. 5 minutes. Took far much longer queuing up to get onto the tram type vehicle (Fløibanen funicular) itself. As you can imagine everyone wants to be at the back (not at front with driver) going up so they can watch the views as they are going up the mountain and again same location down (not at front with driver). So as you can imagine people push each other on stairs to get to that spot. All other rows after that get pretty full but if you go right to front where the driver is then you have much more space and you can dance and party in that space whilst looking at everyone else being squashed like sardines. Ok I might not be able to have a great view from the ground leaving me but I still have views at my side and I am having a great dance with all the space around me. Once out of the tram on top of mountain I am then greeted by an amazing view of the town and the harbour/sea with its many cruise ships that are in docked at that time. There is also a café/shop up on this mountain along with a park, picnic area and forest. A must for everyone to do and it's amazing seeing the cruise ships from high above. read more

Floyen offers a gorgeous view of Bergen and its surroundings be it day or night. And if you have some time, I would recommend taking the Floibanen to the top, but walking down one of the trails to the city. Or if you have even more time you could hike both ways and enjoy the little trails on your way up. Don't worry, there's always plenty of ppl around! Enjoy! read more

I originally thought the floibanen itself was the 'attraction', but it isn't. The technology is cool, but only 5 people in the front row will be able to see out the front, so it isn't really worth fighting to get that spot in a huge crowd of people. The ride itself is very quick and the view at the top makes up for it! I think it's partly being American and our fire hazard laws that I was so disturbed by the queuing/lack of queuing for the floibanen. We paid for tickets and walked down a tunnel into a cavern where we waited for the cable cars to arrive. It looked like we would form lines, but more and more and more and more people kept coming in, packing by our sides and in front and behind us. The staff kept telling people to push in tighter. And then all hell breaks loose when the car arrives and people have to push past to get through the turnstiles. #notafan #firehazard Oh and because I was looking for this information when I was planning my trip - you can definitely walk from the train station/bus station in Bergen to the Floibanen. You don't need the transit card/bus. We actually had a bus card and couldn't figure the buses out (lol) so we just walked everywhere and it was quite a beautiful walk, even in the rain. read more

This is a must do if you visit Bergen. This was the second time I've done it (both in March). The ride up is quick and then you are in for a treat because the view is amazing. You can take the tram up and down or you can walk up and down. You can also get a one way ticket up which is what we did. Bears repeating - the view is incredibly amazing. Tons of photo opportunities with the city and mountains in the background and not too crowded (keep in mind this was March so it might be more crowded in the spring and summer). There's a hotel up there and a gift store. When we went this time, there was a ton of snow. This is important because they do not treat the path so you're in for a lot of ice and rail holding walking down. I was a bit scared during one portion of it as I'm super clumsy and shuffling along a sheet of pure ice downhill is terrifying to me. The first time we did it, the path was clear and it's not a bad walk at all. I'd definitely go back again if in Bergen. read more

The Fløibanen funicular will take you to the top of Mount Fløyen in the centre of Bergen whereyou will see some of the most spectaular views, ever! I do say this about most of Norway as it is one of the most majestic, naturally beautiful places I have ever visted. But I do recommend you pay the money to do take the funicular if you find yourself in Bergen. It is expensive (most things in Norway are!) but if you like amazing views and a once in a lifetime experience then you must try this. You can always just get a single and walk back down. The mountains are great for exploring and can be quite an adventure. Unfortunately I was too tired for this but I did meet some people that did try who recommended the hike back down. read more
