The Fountain of the Turtles is in Piazza Mattel and is one of the more interesting in a city that is already full of fountains. It dates back to 1580-1588 and was completed by sculptor Taddeo Landini.
The fountain is made up of a square basin with rounded edges that houses in its center a base with four shells made of portasanta marble. This base supports a kind of amphora, which in turn supports a round basin made of gray African marble with heads protruding from its rim and spilling water into the square basin from their open mouths. The entire structure is supported by a stepped base.
The turtles that give the fountain its name were added in a 1658 restoration carried out at the behest of Pope Alexander VII and are attributed to Gian Lorenzo Bernini or Andrea Sacchi. The original turtles are at the Capitoline Museums and what we see today are copies.
If you can't make it to Rome, check out the fountain in San Francisco's Huntington Park. It's a copy as well. https://www.yelp.com/biz/huntington-park-san-francisco
