When 'Reputable' Isn't Enough…read more I purchased four 450R engines from a shop in Florida, each with around 500 hours. Since I don't live in the U.S. and the engines were exported, I wasn't able to inspect them personally. I had a friend take a quick look, but I did not carry out a full survey as I normally would. Given that the seller is a reputable shop and assured me the engines had just been serviced and were in perfect condition, I proceeded with the purchase without a detailed inspection. Now that the engines have arrived here, we removed the cowling on one unit that suffered minor transport damage to assess what parts might be needed. However, the first thing we noticed upon opening it was the condition of the hardware: many of the screws are heavily corroded--so much so that in several cases it's nearly impossible to remove them using standard methods. When I raised this with the seller, their response was that this is "absolutely normal" and that all engines look like this. This is coming from an authorized Mercury Tech who claimed the engines had just been serviced and were in perfect condition.
