Had one line/register open on a Saturday along with self checkout. It Took over 45 minutes to get through the line. Never again.

This store needs some help. First off, the cart situation when we got there was crazy and the doorway trying to get in is cramped with products so it's single file in and out. The store itself is very cluttered and not well maintained. Trying to get down the aisles with pallets and carts of products scattered all around the place with all the people is extremely frustrating. Not sure what the managers are doing as far as planning ahead with stocking and organizing but it's not working too well. No pics because I didn't have time while trying to run around and get my stuff and dodge the product all over the place, carts and other shoppers. read more

I have been shopping at Food Lion in Avon every year since about 2000 when I started going to the Outer Banks. I always get what I need. On check-in days there is a little bit of a crowd though. And the price is a reasonable. read more

Sadly we had a terrible experience. Just stopped in while visiting from out of town. Floor scrubbers followed us down the aisle loudly right behind us. The cashier was busy having a conversation with another employee and didn't even acknowledge us. Scanned our few items, never gave us a total, we paid and left. No thank you, no goodbye. I love vacationing in this part of the Outer Banks, but let's be real, it's super desolate. I opt to stay in Avon over the towns south of it because there are some restaurants and this major grocery store here. If you go down to Buxton or Hatteras, there are just small and overpriced markets. So, this is a good place to stop for a somewhat affordable major grocery trip if you are heading to points south. Since moving to NC, I've grown to appreciate Food Lion. The stores aren't anything too impressive, but the prices are usually decent enough. I'd say this is a medium sized Food Lion and decently stocked. Store is in decent shape and I had no problems finding what I needed. I imagine this place is nuts on Saturdays during peak season though. I perused the beer and wine section, decent enough prices and selection. If you forget things like toiletries, this is a place you can pick them up, but the adjacent Dollar Tree is going to be cheaper. Employees at the checkout were friendly, efficient and polite. This is the only supermarket game in town, but at least it's a decent one. read more

We live here on HI. Grateful for a local store. This one isn't great, we shop online whenever we can, and buy groceries up the beach. Had to report an issue with our tuna steaks the other night, just got a moldy bag of clementines, typical off season neglect. Hopefully we will get some kind of resolution, usually food lion customer service just ignores us. read more

I come on Yelp to give positive glowing reviews and call out exceptional service. It gives me no pleasure to write this. I attempted to contact the store management with no response. This store does not care about their customers or employees. As local residents, my elderly parents shop here. Without fail, this store always lets customers go maskless. I have also seen a staff member in the frozen food section without a mask. The response from management "nothing we can do about it." Today a man without a mask got in line behind my father as he checked out with an elderly cash register attendant. Does the store not even care about their employees? The customer service at our local grocery store is the worst ever. My cashier today was Larry K, and he could not even be bothered to speak during the entire transaction. This is a common occurrence at this store. They are spending money remodelling the store, but what they need to spend money on is better staff. I hate this store and it puts me in a bad mood every time I have to go in. We have no other large groceries for 60 miles. read more

Well I haven't seen the Food Lion in a long long time. Well I can't really say I've missed much. This is the only real grocery store that was available in the Outer Banks area. Considering it is the OBX I guess it's proper to expect on prices and no sales in a grocery store. Well this was certainly true of Food Lion. I was quite surprised that there deli didn't even have or make sandwiches. I can't speak to their quality we bought a few things but we were on vacation and it wasn't the time for major cooking. I can say the prices were quite high compared to what I pay in Tampa Florida and I'm glad I don't have to pay those prices on a daily basis. If I plan on returning to the OBX I will make sure to take the food I want and buy it prior to getting to the island. What's a girl to do? When in Rodanthe, do as the locals do. read more

I live here and Food Lion is like the evil empire. You go there because you have no choice. Even on a weekday, there are only 2 or 3 cashiers who don't speak English. I've walked in, saw the lines stretching back into the aisles, and walked right back out to drive down to Conner's in Buxton. Food Lion must have difficulty hiring people because they can't even clean up the parking lot from grocery carts. I can't wait for Lidl to open in KDH. read more

We needed a few things on the way back from dinner. And low and behold we found the Food Lion. They have a pretty darn good selection considering the location. I was looking for some good wine and I found just that. 2 bottles of great Sauvignon Blanc. One from California and one from New Zealand. I also wanted a citronella candle to scare away the skeeters as I am on their "Favorites" menu. They had the candles too. I was surprised at how inexpensive the wine was, considering the remote locale. They were about the same price as I pay in Los Angeles - and in L.A. they don't have to come across on a ferry. The service was friendly and the store was clean. read more

Good selection, stocks most of your needs for a week's vacation. Went to the meat cooler for a pork loin. They only had two left. Both were the factory sealed vacuum packed variety. Both were also sticky as hell. The one I picked up still seemed to be sealed. Also bought a 2 1/2 pound package of ground beef. The staff that does speak English is eager and willing to help. The staff that does not speak English is less than useless. I had to explain four times to the girl bagging the groceries that I did not want that nasty, sticky, slimy pork loin in the same bag as my ready-to-eat foods, it needs to be bagged separately from everything else. After I finally got that through her head, she tried to put the beef in the same bag as the eggs. Had to explain food safety to someone who works at a grocery store another four times. Take the time to train your staff. It's a lot cheaper than giving a town full of people trichinosis. read more

Great to have a food store so close to where we were staying . It's a little misleading when you go into the building there is no lion. Sure there is food but I think they lured me in saying there is a lion there. I have an on going lawsuit against this store for false advertising so I can't really comment much more. While I prefer to support local businesses when I'm down in the Outer Banks Food Lion has it's place there in Avon. When everyone else is closed, they're open. Especially when I'm getting into town late and want to grab something for dinner. There's always cold sandwiches ready to go in the deli area and I can grab pretty much any other last minute essential I'm going to need for the weekend all at once. read more

As far as grocery stores go this one is pretty standard. They do have a decent deli and a pretty good beer selection. They did not have any sunglasses or other odds and ends which was disappointing, but it has pretty much everything you need for a week at the Outer Banks. read more

Food Lion is nothing more than your local Megamart. Give it the Meijer, Giant Eagle, Kroger, IGA, Piggly Wiggly, Winn-Dixie name, and you'd never know the difference. There's very little that's unique about the Food Lion, and even the layout is familiar to my local Megamart. While there's nothing wrong with that per se, I'm not looking for the same, rote experience when I'm on vacation. That said, the food is acceptable, the prices are low, and for someone who needs to save twenty or thirty cents here and there, it's a good option. read more

I found that if you go early on the weekend its not much of a problem. I was there 7-730AM on Sunday and the store was fully stocked and not that busy. Store is clean, good selection and fair prices - no tourist gouging. The comment on here about the English speaking abilities of the help I did find to be accurate. Its really not a big deal though - everything is very easy to find here. You really shouldn't need to ask many questions. read more

We hit the Food Lion at 10am. It was more like a grab and go. Yes, we are on an island. Yes, most everyone local and vacationing is doing what I'm doing at the same time. As far as Food Lions go, this one is pathetic. They have no where near the selection of food their closest other Food Lion has in Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills, yet it has been said that this place is the very busiest (most profitable) store on whole OBX. Go there any time in the summer and you will see employees sitting on the bench smoking cigarettes and not a cart to be found except overflowing in the parking lot. Half of the cashiers do not even bag your groceries. They just stand there. read more

Okay, I'm sure I'm not breaking new ground here, but Ye Gods is this place crowded. It should go without saying that venturing in on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, as people are arriving for their week vacations, is an exercise in insanity. However, the rest of the week is almost as bad. I don't think I've ever gone through checkout when it's not a nightmare. Granted, it's probably better off-season. That being said, it is the only game in town for economical grocery-shopping, and to that end, prices are good and the store is almost always well-stocked. So, 3 stars. read more

They actually have a decent selection here and the prices are not bad. Since it is the only major grocery store on the island it is MOBBED on the weekends at all hours. I'm dinging them because the help seems to be rather lethargic and don't seem to care about their jobs. I have to give props to a beach town grocery store who can manage to cue up the likes of Fish Sauce, Chilli-Galic sauce and Red Curry when sometimes my own DC metro area grocery store can't manage to stock any of those things! This Food Lion was one of the most disappointing stores I have ever shopped in. All of the grocery carts were in the parking lot. The shelves were empty. We bagged our own groceries. Maybe, they were short staffed tonight but it was definitely not like my neighborhood Food Lion. Everything I described is a reflection of poor management. read more

If you travel to Avon, NC try not to purchase your groceries at the Food Lion unless you have a translator! Omg!! No speak English!!!! Where is the coffee and mustard? Wha coffee, mustard, idk what is dis!? Every year they hire foreigners from other countries. I think last year it was Denmark? They spoke English and were very nice. This year we are not sure, Romania, Russia? We don't know, only that they do not know any English!!! We would ask where something was and they could not show or tell us where it was. Then when we paid for our groceries the person who could speak English asked us how much money we were giving him. He entered $10 instead of $100 and had no idea how to input and extra $90 into the register to make $100 and had to get the manager. This awesome fishing, surfing town with the cute little surfer locals as the employees of the area are no more. It is filled with no speak English folks and the staff at the local dairy queen didn't even crack a smile! read more

Local large chain grocery store in Avon, NC. They have a good selection, but the prices are obviously higher because of the lack of competition. I recommend bringing down as many non-perishables as you can from home, and shop at the Lion for the other goods. read more

Our family stopped here for groceries during our first trip to OBX and we came back several times for odds and ends throughout the week. We were very impressed with the hard-working and polite staff who were efficient and kind despite the chaos that comes with being one of the only grocery stores on an island during a popular vacation season. We were able to find everything we needed as the store was well-stocked; despite the massive crowd squeezed in to the store. All registers were open and we ended up checking out and paying in a very reasonable amount of time. Expect a crowd but also expect excellent service. read more

The stocking staff is never worried if you need to get by them in an aisle or not. They stand in the way, put their stocking carts in the way and never say anything, such as "oh I'm sorry let me get out of your way for a moment so you cab buy things from our store. Hope you have a great day." This is the only Food Lion (or even chain grocery store) around, meaning they really have 0 competition, and it shows.
