He generously shared stories about the store's history, from when it housed the second freezer in North Carolina (the first was in Kinston!) to the days when families rented freezer space because most homes didn't have one. One of the coolest details? The original fireproof cases behind the counter, where customers' monthly account slips were once kept. Lee has even saved some of those old papers--tangible pieces of history you don't often find in a working grocery today. Along with the history, the service was outstanding. Lee was kind and welcoming, and Howie, a young employee, went out of his way to be friendly and helpful. That personal touch makes all the difference. Of course, you can't leave without trying their famous homemade specialties. We picked up some of their pimento cheese, chili and cucumber salad--they were absolutely delicious, fresh, and full of flavor. The store also has a small meat counter and coolers stocked with local favorites. Conrad & Hinkle isn't just a grocery store--it's an experience. I just looked it up and it's been family owned and operated since 1963!!! I do know the (Wayne) Shuler Family now owns it and that's a wonderful family. I rented from Wayne for 8 years and he's a stand-up, good man with integrity. The grocery store offers the convenience of a small town store but the variety of larger stores. You can get home grown tomatoes, a fresh bouquet of flowers and everything in between! The staff is friendly and efficient, so you'll be ok your way in a jiffy.
