"I'm so hungry!" So…read moremoaned Kip as we made our way home, him from a busy Saturday shift at the pub where he works, and me from meeting my mum in town. Aha, I remembered, we'd be passing that new street food police box that Blythe reviewed earlier today, let's stop by and try it. Cue, the best decision I made all weekend. Having had a busy day, what with the Tram Stop Market, the lovely chap who runs B&B had run out of slaw, so gave us a discount on our meals. Totally unnecessary, but very welcome nonetheless. As we were going to be walking and eating (no mean feat) we both opted for rolls - mine with beef, Kip's with crab. The beef was slow-cooked short rib in a sherry gravy, umm, amazing! Tender and delicious, the roll (from Manna House) soaked up the juices wonderfully providing an entirely enjoyable experience with every bite. The crab comes in a home-made lemon mayonnaise, and Kip declared it better than the beef (I wouldn't agree, they were both excellent and I preferred the warm temperature of the beef to the cold crab). B&B had proved to be so good we stopped by again on Sunday - this time I had crab on 'tarragon salted chips' and Kip had crab with quinoa salad. Again, he was certain his meal was better (it was very nice) but I'm a sucker for chips and these were perfect, yellow, crispy chips made in their little deep-fat fryer to order. Mr B&B told us he's got the lease for 12 months, so please do pop by and try! There's a couple of great sounding brunch options which I'm keen to try. In fact I want to go back again today, but I suspect 3 days in a row might be a bit excessive. Oh, and of course now I've made myself really hungry. Mmmm crab and chips...

After some extreme bargain hunting at the Omni car boot sale I needed some quick grub!…read more I had passed Barnacles & Bones a couple of times on my way home from work and going on the recent reviews I decided to give it a go. I was also interested to see what food you can make in a tiny police box! A friendly hello came from within as I studied the menu. The options are simple - crab dressed with lemon mayonnaise or slow cooked rib of beef. Pretty gourmet for a phone box! This can be served on tarragon fries, quinoa salad or on a roll. We decided to go for one of each on chips. The food is fresh and made to order so be patient, remember there is only room for one chef! Our food arrives in cardboard boxes and we happily take our wooden forks and dig in. Delicious! The chips are wonderfully crispy and the tarragon salt is unusual but the aromatic flavour works. The main attractions of the beef and the crab are lovely and soft in contrast to the crunchy potato. The flavours are delicate and tasty. I felt the beef was more of a success as it was hot. Although the crab was delicious it was cold and didn't work as well on the chips. At £6 a box it's not the cheapest but a nice treat. It's an original idea, something I have not seen before, always good to try something new! Cheers, Amy

The other day my friend thought, "What a wonderful day! I'm in the mood for a Kurdish."…read more A few hours later he was sprawled out on a hospital bed with the doctors contemplating the fate of his appendix, he had been so poisoned by this unfortunate establishment (he said it didn't even taste good!) I would HIGHLY recommend this place if you want: * To lose weight (by means of constant vomiting and the surgical removal of an organ). * Comfortable room & board in your local hospital. * To hasten the inevitable onslaught of death. * A shit meal. Otherwise, there are plenty of better options in the local area.

After having seen a couple of people posting on Facebook about this new place on Allison Street, we…read morewalked up and got ourselves a takeaway. While it looks a bit like a typical kebab shop where you might get chips and pakora and pizzas too, the menu sticks to authentic Middle Eastern food with sharwma and a range of starters including baba ganoush, tabbouleh and fatoush (a type of salad). The starters are all around £3 and there's a mixed starter on the menu for £7.50 so thinking it might be like, y'know, a mix of starters, I asked about that but the guy said they didn't have any. So I ordered baba ganoush and tabbouleh starters but they didn't have any tabbouleh either, so I ordered baba ganoush and hummus. For mains, I ordered a chicken shwarma and a lamb shwarma - I spent some time in the Middle East in 2003 and I'm always on the hunt for a Scottish chicken shwarma that's just like the real thing. The total was around £16 for two starters and two mains. All the bread is freshly made and really tasty. The shwarmas were pretty good, not drop dead amazing but better than your average takeaway kebab. The hummus was good and the baba ganoush had fresh green pepper chopped through it which I've never had before but which gave it a fresh, sharp taste. While we were in, it was quite busy and the rest of the clientèle were all (I'm guessing) Kurdish so they were either all friends and family or this place must do something approaching authentic food. There were a few small tables you could sit at but it's definitely more of a takeaway place. The main thing I didn't like was that there was an overflowing rubbish bin just as you walked in the door. To be fair, it seemed to be overflowing with empty cans and bottles rather than food waste, but it's still not the best sight to see when you walk into somewhere serving food. And given that it was early on a Saturday night, I was surprised they had run out of some of the options on the menu. The food was better than your average kebab shop takeaway and did feel pretty authentic Middle Eastern. I'd probably go back if I was in the mood for a shwarma as there isn't much else around this area, but it didn't blow me away.
