I don't shop at foodtown but I came to get something in particular that I can't find in just any supermarket. I love boba!! I'm such a boba fanatic that I spend so much money weekly on it. I'm glad that I can now find these boba kits in the frozen section at my local supermarket and make my own at home. Kit includes boba with flavored syrup, straws and can be made in 60 seconds. I was actually impressed by the stores set up and I'm looking forward to coming back and doing some shopping. Check out was quick and the store is spacious with a large variety of specialty items I can't find in other supermarkets. The coffee flavor is incredible!!! read more

I was around this area and saw Foodtown so I popped in to check it out and I barely ate much for breakfast so I saw the cold cut selections immediately when I went in. 6.99 for a cold cut club sandwich is a decent price. I didn't want to eat any cold cuts so I decided to see what else they have and miraculously I saw the hot items in one section of the supermarket. I saw chicken nuggets but they were a lot though and saw a couple of bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches so I took one to go. At 4.49 is a decent price for this type of sandwich. I quickly paid with a credit card and had trouble paying it with the merchant kiosk. I tried to sign my name after inserting my credit card but it didn't allow me to and the cashier said it was fine. Not sure if it was fine but I trusted her though. I went out with the sandwich and when I opened it I saw the American cheese melted all over the sandwich and it looked so delicious. The egg is kind of overcooked but I was fine with it. Mostly all yolk and the bacon was a bit too fatty. I had to take the fatty part out of the sandwich. Other than that, the sandwich was pretty good and filled my hunger. This food town is kind of big and took over the whole block. read more

Honestly not sure how I used to shop here before Trader Joe's opened up in Williamsburg. I came here today and it was quite an upsetting experience. Lots of the meats look unsafe to eat, many items don't have prices on them, other items are extortionately expensive, and it's important to really check the register as they ring you up since many of the items end up having the wrong prices so they will make someone go back and check the signs which takes forever when I'm in a hurry. read more

I think I encountered the same rude young female employee Jen A. encountered last November.... She identified herself as a manager. The store had Tate's cookies on sale for $4.99. I selected four bags; two each of two separate varieties. One variety scanned at the proper sale price, the other at the regular price of $6.49. The cookies were under a sign that read, "Tate's Cookies Assorted Varieties $4.99". This young lady, and two other employees, claimed that the sign meant that only assorted varieties are on sale - which is certainly not the case. The sign clearly means that there are assorted varieties of Tate's cookies available. If only certain varieties are on sale, the sign would read "Select Varieties". This manager had the audacity to comment on me shopping at Whole Foods Market (I had two bags of food from WFM - and, very clearly, WFM and TJ are siphoning off their customers...). One reason I do shop at Whole Foods and our new Trader Joe's is that their employees display class and professionalism - among other attributes. What happened is that I selected the Lemon cookies. The packaging clearly indicates that the flavor is new - and Foodtown corporate has not entered that particular UPC into their system. This is not an infrequent occurrence at Foodtown.... It's been nearly two years since I spent a week at the Pod Hotel in Brooklyn, right next door to Foodtown. But I'd regret it if I didn't write a review for it, even with it being super late. This place is chock full of stuff. It's not a big aisles, beautiful displays, take your time wandering kind of grocery store. It's a packed to the gills, get in and get out kind of practical store for busy professionals and families. I loved it. Almost every day, I'd go in and get something from the hot deli. The roasted turkey was moist and delicious and went well with a side of roasted vegetables. The egg on a roll in the morning was cooked fresh to order and again, was delicious. The guys behind the counter really know how to cook! I wish we had delis like this in Seattle grocery stores. Sigh. I like how the cashiers chat it up with each other and some kinda ignore you when you're checking out. Not in a mean way, just in a I've got better things to think about way. Usually this kind of service bothers me in Seattle, but in Brooklyn, it made me feel like I was a local. I liked it. I was racially profiled by a tall, lanky man who didn't identify himself, but was most likely loss prevention today. I walked in to deliver an order for Instacart and as I entered the entrance a man seem to be white passed by which was the wrong exit. I lost my signal to accept the order so I tried to leave and a man in casual clothing looked at me as tried to get past him. He stopped me to check my bag and he found nothing. I never touched an item in the store I'm pretty sure loss prevention needs to find you red-handed and/or have committed a series of thefts before they confront you *I used to work at Trader Joe's, Shaw's/Starmarket, Target* I'm very familiar with the loss prevention division. Foodtown is a good market. They keep it at 50 degrees, so even if you like cold weather, you should take a sweatshirt. It's kind of between Food Emporium and Morton Williams but more gluten-free, Whole Foods-y dry goods (no one in Williamsburg, it seems, eats normal pasta). They also believe, evidently, they are saving humanity by offering neither paper bags nor plastic bags.The plastic bag ban was relaxed in NYC due to COVID-19 amidst concerns about reusable bags. Whether or not this was a legitimate concern (I tend to this it was not based on the recent CDC statement about the unlikelihood of contracting the virus via surfaces, but whatever), every store in Manhattan has gone back to plastic bags. Not Food Town. They seem to have missed the Cornonavirus bag memo. So stunned was I after the Food Town run that I had to see if Whole Foods still gave out paper bags. They do. Now I've been in W-burg two days (and a night) in a week. I love the area around Domino Park and frankly, there is more appealing food in a 6 block stretch there than any area on the UES. That part of W-burg is food heaven. But as I left Food Town, all I could think is, "This is the idiocy that gives Williamsburg a bad name." It's not the $2.17; it's the attitude. I went here yesterday evening because it was conveniently located near the Whole Foods we visited and we'll do almost anything to avoid patronizing our neighborhood grocery store (Swine Fare [aka Fine Fare]). Note that there's only street parking (which is why I made a solo visit), but that's not surprising. Anyway, I really liked this store! It's not huge, but it has a good selection and the interior is lovely; it's nicely laid-out & organized and very clean & bright. Also, the employees were *very* friendly and helpful (for example, I didn't realize the [small] carts were in front of the store and I asked a cashier where they were - so a nice young male employee ran out and brought one in for me. When I later paid for my purchases, the cashier was very friendly). I complimented the manager when leaving and he was also very nice. (Note that prices are on the high side at this store, although not quite as pricey as Whole Foods (aka Whole Paycheck). read more

Went in to get fruit for eating and as models for a painting class. I didn't see any organic fruit at all. The mangos were rock hard. The honeydew melons looked like they needed to head directly to a dermatology clinic and the cantaloupe I picked up had white mold sprouting from its pupik. I left empty-handed. read more

This is the largest grocery store in the area with a nice selection and reasonable prices. They have a big produce section, full deli, a lot of dairy products, and everything you would need. The deli does offer samples and the store has sales via a FREE membership program. But wait, there is more, they have FREE grocery delivery when you have $25 or more in groceries. Absolute best quality-to-price ratio in the area, and great variety. Produce section is impressive and changes with the seasons. There are organic and conventional options of the basics, and specialties like aloe leaves and varieties of hot peppers. (If you're buying bananas at Whole Foods, you are bananas, this is the same stuff at significantly better prices. And I'm so picky about that stuff.) Fish and meat counter always delivers. They stock big-name brands like Coca-Cola, Heinz, and Ziploc, and boutique brands like Van Leeuwen, Siggi's, Mrs. Meyers, and Simple Mills. Everything worth buying at Whole Foods is here, but Foodtown is a smaller grocery chain local to the region that has a particularly good branch here in Williamsburg. I've been loyal to this store for years and am writing this review because I want my neighbors to go there, too, so they can afford to keep up the good work. One-stop shop for me. read more

The other day we went to this grocery store to do some shopping. We finished everything and went home, then the next day after we bought it we wanted some cereal for breakfast and I poured it and it looked really thick but I didn't think anything about it but then when I put my spoon in the bowl and picked it up and it was really Slimy and dripping very slowly it was so thick. We had also bought some produce apples,zucchini,carrots. The apples were really soft and not crunchy, the zucchini was all wrinkly and brown there wasn't one zucchini that looked normal, the carrots were extremely soggy and not hard like normal carrots. Then we had tried to return the milk and brought it back to the place with the receipt and the guy refused and said that it was our fault that the milk that they sell is bad. Don't blame your bad products on the customers that are just trying to do there daily shopping and business with you. read more

I left this supermarket feeling highly insulted as one of their young female employees maybe manager (average height, latina maybe, with a full face of makeup, extreme eyelashes, and a slicked back ponytail) approached me as I was trying to look at the protein bars by the door before checking out with my items. I tried to move forward to allow her to pass from behind me as I assumed she was another customer trying to get through but instead she approaches me and says "You gonna pay for that?". Like ma'am. There is clearly a cash register right next to me. If you guys are uncomfortable with customers looking at the protein bars near your exit without the assumption that we're gonna run off, then maybe find another location for them. I left feeling flustered and extremely insulted that she would think it's okay to even approach me and make such an assumption. Someone needs to check her! read more

Lots of options for cheap. Typically I travel into Manhattan for most of my grocery needs but when I'm in Williamsburg doing yoga, this is the BEST place. Plenty of food options (with some off brands which tend to be hard to find at other stores...) for really good prices. Has all the staples that other specialty stores seem to overlook. I used to shop here but the plain clothed security guard beat a homeless while elder up simply for trying to shop lift some small items. The man was cold and the security guard just pushed him in the back of the deli and beat him while he screamed. The proper thing for Foodtown employees should be to call the police or have the shop lifter sign an agreement to pay a fine. The decision to beat this elder by a Foodtown employee was wrong. Customers could hear the man yelling as he was beaten. Terrible actions taken by Foodtown. I won't support this establishment for their unethical practices. I love Foodtown. To all the haters - find me a better grocery store in the area and I'll buy you a drink or two. I'm serious. I usually go to Red Hook Fairway for bigger grocery trips, but in terms of convenience, Foodtown has no competition. They carry all the items I simply can't find at C-Town, Met or Key Food. Romanesco? Check. Kumquats? Check. Blood oranges and marrow bones? Also check. Their produce section is a thing of beauty. Their selection of dairy products brings tears of joy to my eyes. The place is always clean and cashiers are reasonably competent. Yay! I'm taking off one star for the extremely narrow aisles. I'm not girthy by any means, but I always feel like I'm awkwardly squeezing past the other shoppers. If I'm carrying a basket and a purse, fuhgeddaboudit. read more

It's a reasonably priced, well-stocked grocery store in Williamsburg, a place that, really, previously had no such thing. No, it's not where you're going to get your artisinal injera, heirloom celery or free-range banana chips. There are plenty of boutiques for that. This is the place where you will get decent produce affordably, which helps the people not living in the condos to avoid living in an economically-induced food desert. You can get groceries late in the evening, up until midnight, which is great for everybody who's working through and past happy hour. And because of that, and especially because of its location, It's probably one of the best things to happen to the neighborhood since they decided to overhaul McCarren Park Pool. read more

This is a pretty good grocery store, especially given the popularity of the area. While it cannot compare with a 10 acre grocery store in the suburbs with everything imaginable on the planet, you do not have to gallop through a massive hangar either. A densely packed medium size store where you can be in and our in 15 min or even less if you know the layout. There is a good produce section, both loose and prepackaged. I wish the were more organic items, but the available options are decent. Often they have exotic fruits like guavas, pepino and African melons. The cheese section is acceptable but not great. Strangely there is a large selection of butters (someone must be very much into it), fresh meats are always good but there is very little fresh fish. Dairy section is large but then so is most stores these days. Prices are not exactly low but will not empty your Whole Wallet either, definitely a bit cheaper than Fresh Direct. Staff is always friendly - this is one big difference from most grocery stores that Foodtown has an advantage. Whenever I had a question I always got an answer, often the bagger at the register will run into the store and fetch the item I asked for while the cashier is continues to scan my items. Today I asked for organic bell peppers while checking out and someone brought them in within a minute. As of this writing this is probably the best grocery store in the area. Their closest competitor - Brooklyn Harvest - is also very good but a bit worse as far as produce is concerned. read more

I resisted liking Foodtown. I wanted to be loyal to the smaller markets in the neighborhood. However, it has slowly won me over. I usually shop at health food stores or the Farmer's Market but Foodtown also carries a lot of organic and health food staples. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. If you need help finding an item the staff (or manager!) will climb on a ladder or go into the back to find it. They also manage to cram an incredible amount of product in the store. I've been able to find obscure items there that even markets in Manhattan didn't carry. Only reason I don't give Foodtown 5 stars is the produce selection could be better, in my opinion. I have bought items that are clearly past their prime, sprouting garlic, soft onions, etc. For a chain store it feels like a neighborhood market. read more

LOVE this grocery store and go out of my way (live further on L train) to shop here. I gotta admit the great rating is due to my opinion of their huge deli section. I can include sandwiches in my daily diet, so cold cuts and a variety is important to me. This store not only has a good selection of Boar Head cold cuts, but also roasts their old pepper turkey (ka-ching!). Good amount of cheese to choose from too! Bakery None, but they do amazing fresh bread for under 2 bones that I finish in 2 hours flat. Nothing beats a good loaf! Carbs be damned! Fresh Produce This area is crammed with many vegetables and fruits, but I believe the prices are slightly marked up. That being said, with high prices you also get fresh produce. It's almost as the veggies were photoshopped. Layout Compact, but it seems that they have almost anything you can thing of. HUGE amount of dairy produce. Local milk, local yogurt. Great selection of meats as well and whole CASE of tofu for the vegetarian/vegan crowds of Williamsburg. Quality and selection are great, and the prices depend on their sales, but are generally great. They have a free membership card you can sign up for at the register. For those familiar with Kroger/Frys/Safeway, it's very similar. You get a card for your keychain to show off your Foodtown pride! One warning for their deli sushi (I know, I know, I shop on an empty stomach). Had it once and it was delicious, second time I shared a Philly roll with a friend and we both fell ill. read more

This is one of the best grocery stores in the area, and one of the best I have been to hands down. The closest competition would be a Garden of Eden but they are twice the price. It is in a convenient location, the prices are reasonable, it's clean and well laid out. They have a full Deli, great produce selection and the meat is fresh (though I would appreciate more, low cost options. I like to get bone in breast and cut it myself but they never have that) solid beer selection too. Foodtown is always my boyfriend's grocery choice. I have teeny issues with the spot because of the crummy vegetarian choices. However, the awesome staff makes up for it. There is also an amazing fish selection. I don't partake in it but my guy spends buckets of money on high quality filets. I get into a Foodtown frenzy all too easily and end up being 'that poor dumb girl' who buys way too much food and struggles to carry it out of the store. First off, it's funny reading these reviews. Particularly to those who reference supposed "haters" of Foodtown. As if a store is above reproach simply because it doesn't have meaningful competition? "Best of the worst" is not a sound argument for a 5-star review. Anyhoo... I give Foodtown the "Meh. I've experienced better" rating because I don't enjoy having to make sure I'm being charged the right price for what I'm buying and I've been overcharged more times than not in this store. On my most recent visit I was overcharged $7 on a $32 order and that's inexcusable. True story, it's not THAT big of deal to have to stare at the readout when items are being scanned, but sometimes I'm preoccupied. You know, with unloading my items onto the conveyor belt, getting my club card scanned, digging out my wallet, and interacting with the staff among others. Frankly, I shouldn't have to second-check the prices I'm being charged and it's annoying to have to be so vigilant when grocery shopping in this store. Also true, I've gotten my money back when I've caught errors in-store or shortly after checkout, but the friendly service gets much less friendly when you point out mistakes. Oh, and don't expect a meaningful (if any) apology for their mistakes. I agree that Foodtown has many upsides when compared to the other grocery-related pickings in this neighborhood, but when Whole Foods opens? Yeah, I'll drop this baby like a hot potato. Honestly, I don't even do the majority of my shopping here thanks to grocery delivery services, TJ's visits, and the like, but the bit I do could be better. BOTTOM LINE: This store does have a better selection of goods than most in the neighborhood, but you're frequently overcharged for that selection. Scanning your club card does not guarantee you are getting the listed price. Keep this in mind when shopping there and always check the digital readout and paper receipt twice! read more

I was beyond thrilled when Foodtown opened up. I live in the neighborhood, and the only real grocery store in town is Tops On The Waterfront, which is sorta pricey with a limited selection. I'd been hitting the Union Sq Trader Joe's weekly, which was really getting to be a hassle. Enter Foodtown. It's clean, comfortable, the workers are courteous---but the best part is that it's VERY affordable. It's as cheap as the grocery stores out in "real" America. They're open til 11pm every night, so I stop by a couple of times a week. Such a nice, pleasant shopping experience. Boy, I was so worried before it opened up; I was worried it would be another Khim's or some other bullshit super-fancy super-vegan/organic price fest for spoiled rich kids.
