My primary care doctor did a thorough test and felt it wasn't broken, but had sustained nerve damage, and even showed me why with a test you learn at med school. First off, I don't care that the office staff wasn't friendly and that the much older nurse or patient assistant taking my info was also rude. I did, however, care that Lori looked at my toe for a total of two minutes (less) after an X-ray confirmed it wasn't broken. She didn't care about the pain and said I had soft tissue damage, not nerve. She said this based on nothing because I asked her if an X-ray would even show it and she said it wouldn't. I showed her the test my doctor did, which she repeated to get the same result -- underneath the toe felt like fire and an electrical current, but she wasn't concerned even after finally seeing where the pain was because she wanted me to buy vitamins. It was a complete waste and scam. However, she told me to stop wearing high heeled shoes (I don't wear them ever), to start taking pain meds my PCP had prescribed for a back injury, and to start a prescription for "medical food" from a company, Metanx. I looked online and there was a watchdog group that had flagged them and the doctors who prescribe their vitamins as medical food (METANX). Yet METANX said the "prescription" could only be done on the phone because it had to be bought as insurance wouldn't pay the $170 kept calling and calling and calling long after I told them to stop. I received no help for a severely damaged toe and was almost taken for a ride by a bogus company. To top it off, months later (two days ago), I received another bill from the office for $25, which I will not be paying. I paid my copay, they accepted my insurance payment, end of story. Truly one of the worst clinicians I've seen in this area and I have been to what I thought couldn't get worse. I truly felt bad for all the elderly patients just sitting in the waiting room who probably had much worse to deal with than myself and would be taken for a ride because of it.

Our foot problem was worrisome but wasn't a major task to repair: it required removing a hard callus and doing some difficult trim work, and it was accomplished quickly and thoroughly and professionally. We came away satisfied - even happy? - with our treatment. We'll be back again in two months. Dr. Sheilds has for decades had a successful surgical office in Florida before returning to New England to be closer to family. His wife is the office manager, and she has the same pleasant demeanor. So, if you have some issues with your feet - which we don't wish on anyone - you should be comfortable starting with this practice here in Litchfield.

This review is long overdue. I needed foot surgery a few years ago. First consult was one of the…read morebig 2 orthopedic practices. I was turned off by the doctor and didn't pursue the surgery. About a year later, I met with of Dr Bauer. I met with him a few times before the surgery and for follow up. Surgery went well. Recovery went well. I did have some difficulties. He continued to work with me until everything was good. The receptionist at the front desk knew me, his nurse knew me and he knew me. And THAT is the difference between a small practice and the medical factories. Things have been so good, I haven't had a reason to see him anymore. I recently required knee surgery. Ended up back at one of the big orthopedic practices. It reminded me of why I ended up with Dr. Bauer in the first place. I have started to look at small medical practices like small businesses. We need to shop there to keep them in business.
