This place diagnosed and told me I needed two crowns. I went to a different dentist. I don't need any crowns. They don't see any issues and they think that's bizarre that someone would've told me that.!!! If you're in Salt Lake looking for a dental office I would recommend looking elsewhere. The office is not taking COVID seriously. They are not wearing masks and when I asked if the staff was vaccinated the hygienist basically laughed at me and it was heavily implied that many of the people in the office are not vaccinated or wearing masks. I didn't want to judge too quickly so I came back for my next appointment and asked the dentist about it. He literally made a joke about COVID not being real. It was frustrating to me because as a patient that wants to get dental care it makes it very difficult when people won't take precautions to keep their patients safe. Finally looking back on my experience with the office I think one of the biggest issues is the general attitude of the staff and dentists. They do not think about the bigger picture and insist that whatever issues exist with your teeth must be because you don't take care of them rather than the possibility that there are other issues at play. They would have subjected me to thousands of hours of dental care and thousands of dollars in bills rather than listening to me about the issues going on with my teeth and sending me to a specialist. Bottom line is the care provided here is subpar and I think there are better dentists in Salt Lake. read more

Alright, I've got to eat a tiny portion of crow here and update my review. I went back for my follow up visit and things went much more smoothly. After being on the antibiotics for a week my tooth had stopped hurting and the Dr. was able to finish my root canal fairly quickly. My first visit was not great and I reviewed just the facts, so I won't apologize for it, but I will add a couple of stars on for the follow up. It felt much less rushed, the Dr. thoroughly explained everything this time (and apologized for my previous experience) and I left happy and very numb. My tooth started aching a bit later in the afternoon, but was ok and expected it because Dr. Stohl gave me a heads up this time. I can't go 5 stars because of the costs. I did a little calling around between my last visit and now and Foothill Dental is certainly not the most competitively priced office. I wish they offered in-house financing or broke up large treatments into a couple of payments for self-paying patients because $1755 for a root canal and crown simply isn't realistic for the average person to just fork over. read more

I just hope they've reaped abundantly what they've sowed with COVID-19 closing their office - hopefully a great financial loss which they so deserve. I'm in agreeement with all the other 1-star reviews --- a rip off at every turn ---- and the need for every patient to have their expensive deep cleaning - which I had with a "hygenist" who was rude and did a half-way job at best. All the girls are so arrogant and rude --- who do they think they are? And, everyone needing a night guard - what a joke! The doctor was very pleasant but when he told us my daughter needed 10 cavities filled and $3000 of dental work I decided to get another opinion, and although she did have some decay the other trusted dentist recommended only 3 fillings. I feel Dr. Stohl is super aggressive and doing fillings that don't have to be done. It's a very beautiful office so overhead must be high! read more

I have been coming to this dentist for maybe 10 years (when I started, they were located in sugarhouse). Just getting around to expressing my gratitude for 10 years of no issues and great hygienists. I've never had an appointment rescheduled (except for when Salt Lake went on lockdown), and they've always worked around my oddball schedule for my regular cleanings. I've never been "upsold", never had to pay for anything outside of my cleanings and (knock on wood) they've never found anything outside of what my insurance would cover. I decided to write this review now because of my recent experience, now that Covid guidelines are in full effect. Upon arrival, I walked to their front door and saw a sign that said to return to my car and call to let them know I was waiting. I got back in my car, called and let them know my car details, and just sat and waited for a few minutes. During that time, I saw one of the hygienists step out and wipe down the interior and exterior door handles, before she went back inside. Then a different staff member opened the door again and flagged me to come in. I walked in with my mask on and went straight back. They had me rinse with a peroxide solution before starting the normal cleaning schematics. I just wanted to show my appreciation and let them know that their new and additional acts of safety and precaution did not go unnoticed. As someone that is meticulous about cleaning and mask-wearing, I felt very safe. They have always had great communication and now their teamwork skills are thoroughly evident. I am saddened by the fact that I spent over. $18,000 with these people and their financial people screwed me over by setting up the wrong payment plan, which has now led to an additional $7000 I owe the care credit company in interest. RE: Foothill Dental - Dr. David Stohl, DMD On January 21, 2020 I had an exam by Dr. David Stohl who is one of the owners and a partner in crime at Foothill Dental in Salt Lake City. I was shown an x-ray with a very large cavity and was then given an estimate to repair of $836.00 for a Crown-porcelain/ceramic substr and a Crown buildup. I was suspicious of the dentist as well as the entire office staff, for a number of reasons - one of which was an extremely aggressive office manager who was high pressuring me to make an appointment to have the work done. I was also given an estimate of $11,437.55 for porcelain crowns for all my teeth to make them appear white and perfect which I didn't request, but I did have a couple of chips that didn't concern me. Subsequently after receiving this estimate, I had a second opinion by a very reputable dentist in Park City with whom I've been seeing for some time previous to trying Foothill Dental because it was closer to my office. Fortunately for me, my dentist from Park City Dental Spa, could find absolutely nothing wrong with any of my teeth and he recommended to do nothing. If I could give zero starts I would. I have been a patient here for two years. First off, if you wake up sick and try to reschedule they will give you a signature phrase " Well we wear masks and gloves, we'd like you to still make it to your apt." I reply with " I'm vomiting and very mucus-y. I also am taking into consideration that other patients might have a weakened immune system and aren't able to catch my sickness, as it may be fatal for them .?" They will still expect you to show up, disregarding that they could harm someone. (After my treatment I watched as I stood at the billing counter to watch if they SANITIZED my chair for the next person. They did not, they changed the plastic on my head rest and changed the tools on the counter. AFTER I TOLD THEM I WAS CONTAGIOUS) On top of that, they do not listen. The hygienist was scraping my teeth claiming that I had some residual cement from braces 10+ years ago. I cringe and shriek in pain, because it HURTS. She asks concerned if I'm always this sensitive? I tell her no I do not have sensitive teeth, but to just scrape that off so vigorously is very painful, and I'd prefer the doc to file it off. We proceed with things as normal and she stops scraping my teeth. Five minutes later the doc walks in sits me back and our hygienist makes a comment "Be careful she's really sensitive" Excuse me. I just told you that YOU were causing me pain, I am not sensitive in my mouth. I corrected her and let the doc know she was hurting me, he acknowledged that he would file it, but did not pay any attention to his hygienist deliberately causing my pain. When it comes to basic dental work, they'll do it for you, at top dollar. but when it comes to building trust with your dentist and a relationship, I would try somewhere else fist. I also second the review down below with the mouth guard as they were doing almost the exact same thing to me. I bought one and they continuously try to tell me I need one. Maybe they forget to make notes on the file. Maybe they don't care enough to listen to their patients. *I called the main line to ask to make a formal complaint and was informed that there is no HR or Manager for the whole office. There are the girls and the dentists and you are not given any place to make a complaint. Reviews are the only way, apparently. read more

Both Dr. Stohls are phenomenal dentists--which is why I am so disappointed that their office is not disclosing information about their approach to COVID safety--in a global pandemic it is absolutely beyond reasonable to expect that your health care providers (especially ones with their face and hands in your mouth) disclose information about the commitment to patient safety including vaccinations, masks for all staff and PPE. We are so disappointed to leave Foothill Dental, but with unvaccinated kids--it's not safe to stay. read more

This place is alright, not the greatest. I went in and felt great checking in and learning of all these pampering treatments they offer as you get your teeth cleaned/worked on. They really want to keep you comfortable while you stay there. My problem was that they asked me if I flossed, without even looking at me teeth (which in 27 years of living I've never had a problem with my teeth at previous dentists.) I said, "not often." They immediately start telling me how I may have gingivitis (again, never any problems with my teeth before) and they said I needed a periodontal cleansing, which is pretty pricey, even with insurance. So what else can you say when you are constantly pressured that you may have a risk of losing your teeth? I went through with the cleansing which hurt sooo bad. Be prepared for it if you try it. They also said I had cavities and needed to make another appointment for those to be filled. As I walked out of Foothill Dental, the feeling I got was this place is in it for the $$$. Offer high priced treatments, get you to come back for more appointments (more copay $$$) I felt cheated and like they were after the $$$ in my wallet. Curiously, I made an appointment with my family dentist to have my "cavities" filled. I have had a relationship with since becoming an adult 10 years ago. I walked out of my family dentist paying for X-rays. No cavities, no threat to my gums. No gingivitis. Stick with people you trust. I won't be going back to foothill dental nor recommending to friends and family. I was encouraged to try Foothill Dental by my wife who swears by them. read more

I've been with Foothill Dental for more than 3 years now. I love going in for my dentist appointments. The location is convenient being close to the U. The new office is super fancy and hi-tech too. I feel like everyone knows me there and they are so friendly; they take the time to get to know their patients! They also have always catered to any emergency needs i have had. I see Tabitha for my hygienist needs, and I literally look forward to each appointment. A *free dental spa* option is offered for each of my cleanings, and I LOVE it. I always leave with a beaming smile and super clean teeth. I have seen Dr. Matt for some pretty extensive catch-up dentistry. I had a bad cavity that he managed to fill without needing a root canal - talk about skill. I then had an implant put in where a tooth had been missing for years - what a great decision! And it was only a one-appointment procedure! Moving forward with my dental transformation, I saw Matt to get all of my amalgam fillings replaced with a non-mercury alternative. And to finish everything off I am now a proud participant in the "Six Month Smiles" adult braces program. After all of this I can say that I haven't regretted any of my dental decisions and have felt completely comfortable in the care of Dr. Matt and his assistants/technicians - yes Nicole is awesome. I have had some bad dental experiences in the past with other dentists - including panic attacks. Never have I even felt anxious or nervous during my appointments with foothill dental. Everyone is so careful and gentle and they always explain the procedures and answer all of my questions. Last but not least - finances. I managed to have all of these services without ever feeling taxed or over spent. Granted I have decent insurance, but on a student budget and the folks here have always been mindful of that. I also have participated in the interest-free payment plans that they offer, and haven't had any complaints. All in all I don't think I could find a better dentist in the city. I came here for orthodontic treatment with clear aligners. Everything in the process was great, despite the fact the treatment was rather on the pricey side. After it was completed, I was seen for a regular cleaning and checkup. The hygienist was unequivocally rude and warned me that my periodontal disease necessitated a full-mouth cleaning and debride. The cost was well into the thousands. I decided to get a second opinion, and when I did there was only a small treatment area that necessitated extra cleaning, and I don't even think I paid a penny after insurance. That indicates to me that may the hygiene department is working a little too hard to get production, and it's not a very honest look. Shortly after this incident, my upper permanent retainer came off. The glue was supposed to last much longer than it did. It took me a while to get in to see the doctor, who remedied the problem by re-gluing the retainer, paying no attention to the teeth that had already moved and ruined my smile. He said to come back in a few weeks to see if the tooth had moved back on its own. Two weeks later, it hadn't, and again I had to fight for a time to see him. Then they said they'd reach out to an orthodontist friend of his to see what the options were. I had to call AGAIN to find out what they'd decided, and they told me that I'd need to set up my own appointment with an orthodontist for a more comprehensive treatment. I invested a lot in the original treatment at Foothill Dental, that money is down the toilet, and now I have to spend an unknown, though probably exorbitant, amount of money to fix a problem caused by Foothill Dental. Beware a practice whose first allegiance is to revenue, not patients. The employees are wonderful though, with the exception of the hygienist, who was rather rude for a professional setting. read more

My experience at Foothill Dental was superb! The waiting room was clean and pleasant and the chairs were so comfortable. The receptionists were so friendly and helpful as I was filling out paperwork. I was there for a simple cleaning and examination. They offer complimentary spa treatments with the cleaning which makes me so excited to go back in six months for my next cleaning, knowing that's a part of the deal. They also have a ton of flavors to choose from for the polishing (that's really important to me. My last dentist used exclusively cinnamon and I hated, hated, hated it). Tabitha conducted the cleaning and was very friendly and professional. She gave me a few pointers on things I can do better and was complimentary on things that I was doing well with my teeth and gums. Dr. Matt was also very friendly and very attentive. Dr Matt Stohl was my dentist for a number of years until May 2015. He and one of his assistants tooth shamed me after they sent the wrong mold of my two front teeth to the lab. When the crowns came in and I explained my concern that they didn't look like my original teeth. I was told that most people come in to get better teeth than they had before. The front teeth crowns were cemented on and I tried to make the best of it. After a few months trying to live with them I couldn't handle not looking like myself!! This full time single working mom had paid close to $2000.00 out of pocket. The only remedy proposed by Dr Matt Stohl was that he could redo them for and additional $600.00 out of my pocket! They couldn't redo them though because they hadn't taken a mold of my previous crowns that had matched my natural teeth perfectly. In order to get them fixed I went to my previous dentist and he was amazing! Dr Matt Stohl refused to refund my money paid even after showing him the pictures that proves how bad they were! I've been a patient with Foothill Dental since I was a child, so going on 20 years now. I'll admit that since I've never been to any other dentist, I don't have much to compare Foothill Dental to. That being said, this has been my experience. The office is amazing. The front office is decorated very nicely with comfortable chairs, plenty of magazines to choose from, and even a nice little waterfall. They have an area for kids to play in, and the bathroom has floss, Listerine​, and single-use​ toothbrushes if you want to clean up before your appointment. During your appointment, they have blankets, warm neck wraps, eye compresses, paraffin​ wax hand dips, and more. The hygienists​ are so compassionate and friendly. They always remember​ me, no matter how long it's been since the last visit, and they usually ask questions about how my schooling is going or how my boyfriend is doing. I'm a naturally anxious person, and chatting about my personal life while waiting for the dentist always makes the whole process a little less nerve-wracking​. I've been seen by both doctors (and their dad before them) but my primary provider is David. Again, he is really good at remembering details about my life and making conversation before he begins his work. I'd say his pre and post-op bedside manner is fantastic​. The one area he could work on is his bedside manner during procedures. For example, more than once when I have had a cavity filled, he has hit a painful spot right near the inner part of the tooth. Rather than stopping, numbing me up more, or changing his tactic, he always say's "we're almost done and keeps on drilling." Usually, he's right and it's only 20 or 30 seconds more, but it always leaves me with a sense of powerlessness and violation. I know that's never his intent but the memories do make me hesitate for just a second, every time I need to book a new appointment. Finally, a lot of the other reviews have complained about costs. I've been very fortunate in my life to have very good dental insurance and so it's never been a huge issue for me. That being said, I do sometimes wonder whether I'm being they are pushing some unnecessary procedures. For example, like many people here, they've been pushing a night guard on me, which I find very interesting since most mornings when I wake up, my mouth is open and I'm drooling. I also always seem to have a cavity, even though I am extremely diligent with flossing and brushing. For the first 18 years of my life I didn't have one, and now, I don't think I've been to a single appointment in the last four years where they haven't found one. I just find that a bit odd. Maybe its the chemistry of my mouth, maybe its overzealousness on their part. I'll probably never know because​ I doubt I'll ever leave Foothill Dental. Even with the few problems I've had, I trust them and am more comfortable with them than I would be any other dentist. read more

I went to this dentist 2-3 times and had my children go to this dentist. I stopped going because I felt that I was being sold services that I did not need, a periodontal cleaning, and because they felt I needed this, they would not do a regular cleaning on my teeth. I do not feel I need the deep cleaning they are recommending. I also purchased teeth whitening for my daughter, for which I was overcharged....several hundred dollars when other dentists offer this for free when you transfer to them. I went here for the first time and it was one of the best dentist visits I've ever had. The staff is super friendly and the dentist was so nice. I got the FREE "spa" treatment, which includes: paraphin hand wax, mini face and neck massage, warm towel around my neck, and a warm or cold compress on my eyes. I thought I was going to fall asleep in the chair. And a small but great thing they also offer is a blanket if you're cold. For some odd reason, all dentist offices are freezing so a blanket is great! I'll be going back for a cavity soon and I can honestly say, I'm looking forward to it. I went to this dentist as a routine check-up. When I was called to go back to the room, the assistant told me that she would be the one who performed the x-rays. Since I had received x-rays on the last visit (~ 6 months before), I asked her if that was really necessary. She stated that insurance will pay for x-rays every 6 months, and that's the only way that the dentists can know for sure if there are any problems with the teeth. I was disturbed that they were setting their practice standards based on trying to get maximal reimbursement from insurance rather than medical indications. I asked them to skip the x-rays. Then a dentist walked in, shook my hand, and looked at my teeth. He said that everything looked ok, and that a hygienist would be in to clean my teeth. The hygienist then gave me a sales pitch for the Sonic Care electric toothbrush after she identified gum disease. She scolded me for not flossing on a more regular basis, and she said that my improper brushing technique was contributing to my gum disease. Only with this electric toothbrush could I avoid progression of the already advanced gum disease. This practice is a well-oiled machine, with hygienists doing the bulk of the work (cleaning and supposed education), while the dentists spend less than 4 minutes with each patient. Despite the hygienist stating repeatedly that she has had 17 years of experience, her inability to explain something as basic as how a sensitive toothpaste can protect teeth left me doubting her knowledge base. Although the technical work of cleaning teeth was fine, I was unimpressed by the condescending hygienist and lack of interactions with the dentist. They spend a lot of effort to make this appear to be a boutique dental clinic. However, what is truly missing is a respectful attitude towards patients, as well as evidence-based dental practices. It seems like making money is their top priority. read more

This is sooo interesting to me. I have been looking over the other reviews on Foothill Dental and I could kick myself for not reading these reviews before I went to them myself. My experience with them was sooo similar to the other reviews. The adage "over promise and under deliver" rings true through everything I have read as well as my experience with Foothill Dental. I agreed to have the suggested procedures done but the poor delivery caused problems that I am still dealing with a year later. Their only solution was to refer me to another doctor who wanted to charge me more for another procedure. I got a second opinion from another dentist who verified that the work performed by Foothill Dental was sub-par and the cause of my pain. The additional procedure suggested by Foothill Dental was not necessary. I would never recommend these people to anyone!!!! read more

I grew up out of state and had gone to several different dentists before I found Foothill Dental. I was referred by a good friend and decided to give them a try. I am very glad I did. When checking in, I was greeted by a very courteous staff, and was taken back to my cleaning chair right away. The first thing I noticed was the nice new facility, and the latest and greatest dental equipment. During my cleaning they were very respectful and seemed to care about my comfort level. After my cleaning I met the dentist Dr. Matt Stohl who took the time to get to know me, and took additional time to answer any questions that I might have. I am really pleased with Foothill Dental. After a move to SLC, I was researching a great dental practice. With a minor dental emergency, I was forced to decide - fast. I made the right decision. They took me right in, fixed the problem and made me feel very comfortable. The staff are happy - makes going their so pleasant. And the best part is that it is a "spa" which helps you relax with additional treatments. Lastly, my last dentist had CEREC and that is a must for me!! Now I can get crowns (if needed) in one visit!
