Years ago we installed too few, too shallow…read more We were going to re-do them ourselves, but I thought it would be a treat for my hubby to pay a pro to do this so that he could focus on his other projects (total kitchen remodel simultaneously) I knew Jeff & hoped that trading pro skills would serve all of us nicely. I am filled with remorse that I pushed my fella to pay this company to work in our yard. Each day he came home from work & was immediately angry. The crew were not executing as discussed. Each day my fella felt obligated to become the "general" on this job, outlining concerns, expressing expectations, offering use of OUR lazer level to ensure this is done BETTER than we could have done ourselves. Each following day, instead of relief that we had gotten on the same page, he would find yet another disconnect between expectation/agreed to processes, & further fear that we had made a bad decision here. Jeff is a very nice man. He listens to your concerns. He tells you he will make it right, even if HE PERSONALLY has to come help. However that doesn't actually occur. In the end, after all the funds were spent, we ended up with SEVERAL ugly surface drains (where there used to be none), far less topsoil than agreed to, a hardpan that was never dug down deep enough, nor properly graded & ultimately the job failed... the yard was now WORSE than before SLS started. Add to this, our backyard never got proper topsoil depth, our sand pit was filled with borderline gravel NOT sand, & we did not get the drawings/map for our irrigation system as promised. We hoped that things would "settle" eventually, even waited several months to be sure of drainage failure before expressing upset & insisting on remedy. We were promised that would happen in spring. We waited and heard nothing about starting the job/remedy. At this point, devastated at having thrown huge money away (excess of 10k)& watching my husband's face as he accepted that we are in fact going to have to SPEND more, & do it over again, I went over Jeff's head to the owner. They were ONLY willing to offer SOME dirt, & seed. They would not bring their machines over. They would not refund. As you can imagine, my husband was NOT willing to have the crew come back & attempt to do the work correctly, there was no reason to believe it would go differently. Now, after literally taking a full week off from work, & spending literally over 5k MORE, my fella has the front yard corrected. He did EXACTLY what we asked for, agreed to, & paid for, but NEVER GOT. We have pics to document that this is all true, as well as receipts for all of this. We tried so hard to make this a mutually beneficial experience. We hoped so much to sing SLS praises & continue referring them going forward. Sadly, now I warn against them. Over a year ago, I engaged this company due to their reported high-end quality. Initially, their…read morework appeared satisfactory; however, by Christmas of 2023, I observed a decline in the quality of their craftsmanship. It seemed that their workers were prioritizing the completion of their tasks to attend the company party. They informed me that my floor required an additional $5,500 for repairs. Despite this, the floor still exhibits signs of unevenness. The stairs, which were supposed to be high-end, were of substandard quality, and the company had to return to complete the job. However, the work was still under warranty, but it cost an additional $4,000 to fix the squeaking floor they created. The final caulking of the stairs was also unsatisfactory. The caulking of the trim was never completed. I had to hire an electrician to fix their mistakes, which cost several thousand dollars, as they are not certified electricians. Regarding the painting, I noticed several areas where the trim was overpainted and areas that were not adequately painted. I did not receive the high-end quality I expected. I had asked them not to ask me to provide a review, but I keep receiving notices, so I am providing one here.

Not only was it inconvenient having to wait so long for the initial appointment, but canceling at the last possible moment using an excuse when they've had our address and knew what neighborhood we were in all along was entirely unprofessional. Scheduling for both phases was a little last minute as they were squeezing us in between other projects, but that worked for us as long as they met our hard deadlines, which they did without problem. For Phase One of our project in December, Orion Rockscapes installed a bluestone landing/apron at the base ofour front steps, as well as steppingstones from there to the side yard. Additionally, they installed new path lighting for the front and side yard paths. We needed these hardscaping things done in time for a holiday party, and they worked to a very tight deadline effortlessly. Phase Two was installed in the spring and started with removing a 15'x15'x15' English laurel and some mature Rhodies, as well as other smaller established plants and shrubs. They followed a plan to install a new rock wall to stabilize a slope, then planted a new hedge and perennial/shrub garden on all four sides of the lawn, in addition to precisely reshaping the lawn to the more interesting curvy shape in the design. They also added a steppingstone path on the other side of the yard. They worked closely with the designer, and came back in a timely way to install a few plants we found we needed once everything was laid out. They even added a handful of shrubs to fill in under a Rhodie that had to be limbed up a bit for accessing the yard. We chose not to install irrigation as my husband prefers to hand water (he's retired). Jade, my point person, and all the crew were incredibly easy to work with and professional, very good communicators. They were tidy and respectful on the site, and kept noise to a minimum, which we appreciated as my husband was just home from the hospital and was recovering from major surgery. Instead of the stressful process many such projects can be, this went so smoothly and efficiently that watching all happen it was actually a source of pleasure and hope at a time we needed both! I have wanted to relandscape the front yard for almost a decade to regain our lake view but kept putting it off because I usually find these big projects stressful. I am so grateful I finally found the right team and they did such a beautiful job. I am loving watching it mature and fill in. Such a huge improvement!
