**June 2025: Weekday Late Morning Visit**…read more My friend and I were visiting the The North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum and saw this exhibit behind the building. It's called "The French Gratitude Train" or also known as the Merci Train - which was a gift from the people of France following World War II. This boxcar was originally filled with gifts and symbolic objects donated by regular French citizens and is a permanent exhibit commemorating the French/American friendship. As a visitor, I thought seeing and reading about this was really inspiring and l gave me hope in the goodwill between nations. It's open to the public so if you're visiting the Museum come check this out.

Then shuts it off for 5 minutes then turns it back on again over and over! Then before that, people are up all night long driving and walking like theyre scoping out the place, i felt nervous because it sounded like they were going through things outside, just really made me feel uneasy, for 60. A night i should feel more safe and not on edge, and the music starts up again at 9:30 am on the weekend. Cant relax on the weekend here, if you want to party thats the place to be. I thought it was going to be a quiet little campground, but by 3am its noisier than heck and it doesnt settle down, on a sunday! I don't reccomend if you want some relaxation on a weekend. Oh yeah when i first arrived i thought i was in mexico, spanish music blaring, this is no place to be if you want to relax or have respect for others, i dont see much of that there. Way too pricey for that atmosphere; sorry hillcrest but my first impression sadly wasnt a good one. BUT on the positive side, i do have to say that it is a pretty area and the staff was accomodating.

I had to sit and wait for a part for my RV for nearly a week, and they were very nice and accommodating, even lending an extra hand when I needed a little help fixing something. Hillcrest sits up on a hill just a few miles out of town, and the property typically gets a nice breeze in the hottest part of the day, which really helps on sunny days. There are trees that provide shade too, so overall it's a very comfortable place even when the temps rise into the high 80's. It always seems to cool down into the 60's at night too, which is a real blessing in the dog days of summer. My only complaint with Hillcrest is their bathrooms, which are pretty much the original structures from decades ago. Frankly, they should have been completely demolished and rebuilt when the current family of owners bought the property from the original developers who built it decades ago. I'm not sure what the plans are, but I'd imagine they understand the situation and will get around to making improvements soon.

No problems getting in and out - easy to navigate. All utilities good. Site fairly level with ground asphalt surface (not our favorite). No host on site, but the hut at entrance had everything we needed. The issue here are the buddy sites, which are VERY close together. With both occupied and slides out, it was VERY hard to walk between rigs. Not a big deal if you have quite neighbors. I'd rate this place 3 1/2 stars but they get the benefit of the doubt since we can no longer give half stars.

There's a pet relief area, with dog waste bags available. The hotel is right next to a gas station/liquor. There are several restaurants & a Starbucks within walking distance. Upon first arrival, the parking lot might seem rather small. However, there is also parking available on the S/SW part of the hotel. The hotel staff was plating breakfast meals due to COVID. Two complaints: The pillows are mediocre. Also, I've stayed at this La Quinta several times. During one stay, the heat & A/C unit worked great. The other stay, it didn't work properly.

The room smelled absolutely toxic. We went down to the front desk and told them about the problem and asked for a different room. The had no open rooms. They said that sometimes the maids spray a little too much when cleaning. We asked for a fan, they said they didn't have one. 20 minutes later, they showed up with one. Told us to keep the door open to air it out. (like we want to leave our door open, we were right next to the elevator). The window was stationary, so we couldn't get any fresh air. The exhaust fan in the room barely worked. My wife was getting sick from the fumes. We decided to cancel both nights, figuring it would be better to sleep in the car. And the people behind the desk, who could both speak English, started speaking in another language. What were they saying? Didn't make us feel very welcome. Will never stay there again.

It's definitely one of those airports where you don't feel rushed or stressed the moment you walk in. The layout is simple, so finding your gate is a breeze. Seating was decent, and there are enough charging outlets to keep your phone alive while you wait. Food options are limited, but what they do have is fine for a quick bite before boarding. One thing I really appreciated was how calm the airport felt. No long lines, no chaotic crowds, just a straightforward in-and-out experience. If all airports operated like this, traveling would be a lot less stressful. Overall, BIS is small, clean, and efficient. If you're flying in or out of Bismarck, it definitely makes the travel day easier.

Even the bathrooms are incredible. Seriously. Even if you don't need to use the restroom while you're there, check them out. I've also attended a couple of public events there. One comedy show and one trivia night. The comedy show was great! For $25, I got a drink and a decent night of entertainment. The only thing I didn't like was having to sit at a round table with 6 strangers - it was awkward, and round tables are just not useful for this kind of event. The other event was trivia night. This time I went with a large group, so we had a table all to ourselves. We shared some awesome pizza prepared by the chef at the venue. The trivia was not great, however. The person leading the games was boring and had a hard time pronouncing some of the more important words. Plus, it was just a poorly curated set of questions, and poorly worded questions. Everyone in my group agreed that we would not be back for another trivia night. But I would definitely return for comedy or another type of entertainment.

Neighbors are very quiet and never had any issues while staying here. Hosts were very helpful in finding the location, welcoming, and quick in responding to my messages. This location was affordable, clean, and I would recommend staying here if you're in the area.
