It is the first mural done since the 1999 tornado that hit downtown Clarksville. #STARRYNIGHTCLARKSVILLE is an 60' wide x 40' tall mural by artist Olasubomi Aka-Bashorum. The artwork depicts the influences of Vincent van Gogh, the mural showcases two iconic Clarksville buildings -the Customs House Museum & Cultural Center and the Montgomery County Courthouse under the distinctive starry night sky. This is the 21st art piece as part of the Art Trail. Twelve of the pieces are in proximity that's easily walkable within the city's downtown core. The project took ten days to complete and was funded by Two Rivers Company, a non-profit entity charged with the redevelopment of the downtown and Riverfront areas, along with private donations.

Local residents showed up in droves and genuinely valued -- and purchased -- handmade work. I made five to $7000 twenty years ago. Unfortunately, the show has changed significantly. It now draws large crowds, many of whom appear to be bused in from outside the area. While attendance is high, sales are not. The loyal local audience seems to have been pushed out by the increased congestion, and many no longer attend. Equally disappointing is the noticeable decline in handmade goods. Walking the show this year, I spoke with several talented artists who shared that they struggled to cover even their basic expenses and do not plan to return. It's a real shame that the show has declined like it has. It used to be a beautiful show and Franklin is a nice town.

It's next to the old Jackson rail station which must have been a busy spot up until the 1950s. It's hard to imagine that the water from the well has been flowing continuously for over 100 years. It has a strong sulphur odor and I didn't taste it due to the "untreated" warning but I remember doing it as a kid and not liking the taste. Make sure to visit the railroad museum next door if it's open.

Yes, it's super weird. And it completely captures the zeitgeist of 21st century 'merica. (So maybe…read morenot that weird?) First and foremost, it's a conflagration of all the state's major political players, who either have to show up to run the gauntlet or they can risk avoiding the event and likely be excoriated by the opposition for their absence. What makes it fairly unique as political theater is that most everyone present is forced to deliver to an audience that is a combustible stew of highly charged partisans from both sides, only a thin buffer of a giddy media in the middle. All the big incumbents are pilloried by disapproving and chanting opposition. And everyone panders to God, country, flag, and tradition. As a nonreligious resident who had the audacity to lack Kentucky roots and even be educated at a reviled school (for sports reasons -- the most important reasons) in North Carolina, I personally enjoyed resounding disapproval from all camps. Nothing of real substance is shared. Nobody's mind is changed. Hopefully the peace is kept. And the locals quietly play bingo a few yards away while all the political junkies fry their vocal folds. The backdrop couldn't be more perfect. The politicians get to glorify the yeoman myth of the rural entrepreneur in the shadow of a small town church steeple, surrounded by smoking meat, bingo games, church raffles, and automobiles parked on every free square inch. There's an extra star up there for the mutton sandwich. Someone out here knows a thing or two about smoking meats. The pork BBQ is excellent too, but go with the mutton for the novelty of it. The biggest surprise for me may have been the fact that it's not very commercialized, perhaps a consequence of this event being so far from any population center. Sodas and ice cream can be purchased for $1 for cryin' out loud. Ultimately, the event is a mix of fascinating and soul-crushing. Any solution to what ails American democracy won't be provided here. In light of that, I have a couple of very modest suggestions to the organizers: - For the love of God, invite an actual comedian here. Kentucky politicians are not themselves good at roasting each other and they can't afford good speechwriters. Comedy is hard, and most of the speeches given are hard evidence of that fact. - Offer a veggie, please! Even if it's swimming in bacon, it would be nice to have something alongside that mutton sandwich. The only veggie option I saw here today was Lay's potato chips (regular or bbq), despite the fact that this event is held in the dead of summer, when local produce should be at its peak. If you all love your farmers as much as the rhetoric suggests, you'd acknowledge them by bolstering someone other than the pig and sheep farmer. It's good for you and it tastes better than socialized medicine.

It is like Graceland for Kentucky political nerds. Everything I heard about it was true. There was booing and howling. People got into it with each other. Jabs and jokes at every politician running was brought up. Reporters were everywhere. People that loved their candidates were not shy about voicing their opinions. It was not uncommon to see groups get into it with each other. Entertaining to say the least, not to mention some good people watching. The food was not bad either. It was very fairly priced (bottle water was a 1$, two scopes of ice cream on a cone was 2$). Obviously, I tried the BBQ. I had mutton to be exact. It was not bad, but I will always prefer pork. There were several booths, Time Warner handed out free water which was a great gift during the heat. You could play tabs or 5 card showdown poker. There was even a photo booth. I would not mind traveling to Fancy Farm. Something to see and I marked it off my bucket list.

I had the House Sampler, which is a great chance to try several different menu items: Lasagna, Chicken Parmesan, and Fettuccine Alfredo. The Lasagna and Chicken Parmesan were excellent--perfectly seasoned and clearly prepared with fresh, house-made ingredients. The Fettuccine Alfredo was good and served as a nice, creamy addition to the plate. My wife had the manicotti and thought it was great; it's definitely a winner if you're a fan of stuffed pasta. What really made the night was our server, Marin. She was great--professional, friendly, and incredibly attentive. We never had an empty glass, our items were served hot and accurate, and she checked on us regularly to see if we needed anything. It's rare to find service this seamless. Between the quality of the house-made dishes and the top-tier service from Marin, we had a wonderful experience.

Hubs actually was exploring our route and discovered this place so we bookmarked it in case we had time. Both times we visited, we were kind of strapped for time so we have yet to go on the tour. They do allow for tastings of their many boozes but they limit it to 6 or 8, which is very smart. I think we did not have that many our recent trip. Since we purchased 6 bottles our first trip (they give a discount for 6+ bottles), we were already familiar and wanted to try some of their new items. Both times we visited, we brought in our dog and she received a lot of attention. They have dog toys so of course I had to buy her one each time. Now those are really expensive! The prices vary for their bottles, maybe averaging about $55. Some are cheaper and many are more expensive than that. They also sell merchandise in the same room you do the tastings. We never have time but they do free tours and I wanna say they last about 45 minutes. It is in the middle of nowhere so it's not like you can make a day out of it any stay in town, while filling up an entire itinerary for a day. We really enjoy their bourbon and keep stock of the Blueberry and Mint Julep flavored bourbons. Everyone is always hospitable when we visit and that motivated us more to support them!

Located just southwest of downtown between midtown and broadway, The Gulch is an expansive, but equally quaint part of the city that is classic mixed use of residential and retail. Main reason you may find me in The Gulch is for food. There is a solid variety of eateries from local casual spots to more established dining, sandwich shops and even a few spots for dessert. While that's my reason, most tourists find their way to The Gulch for the famous wing mural next to Biscuit Love. Got to get them wings while in Nashville! Outside of the food and wings, there are lots of local and chain businesses and services in the area including self-care, medical offices and of course clothing boutiques. Additionally, Noble Park is in the middle of The Gulch. It's a really cool urban space that features a good green space, seating, music and a water wall. It is also host to markets and small events throughout the year. Parking is plentiful in The Gulch, buts its all paid. There are garages, lots and street parking. Overall, The Gulch is a cool area of the city that I don't find myself in too often, but when I do, I always enjoy it!
