I was in Missoula for a few days for vacation and wanted to see some of the best things to do and this came up on a search. The fort is part of a massive park that has soccer fields, picnic tables, walking trails and all kinds of stuff. We spent about 2+ hours just touring the grounds of the fort. I posted a bunch of pictures for you so you can see what to expect. Plenty of flat ground walking, very easy. Lots of history, and plenty of signs to tell you what you are looking for. It is free to park and walk the grounds. I think ther was a small charge for the museum. I think that was also an audio tour you could follow along with. I did not go in the museum part of the fort, so I am not sure if that is worth the small admission price or not. There was also some old military stuff here like helicopters, armored track vehicles, and other stuff. There is an old train pulling an old library car, and all kinds of other stuff. There is a flower garden behind the museum, with all kinds of flowers. Definitely a nice place to walk and take in some history for the area.

Came here with my husband for the annual Mopars at The Fort car show. Beautiful venue! The large Pavilion came in handy as it was a very warm day and there weren't enough full grown trees to provide any shade. It's kept clean with plenty of trash and recycling receptacles available. We would love to come back and go through the fort and museum!

This was a great place to take a pit stop while cross-country drive. There is so much history in this small town, it is so exciting to learn about the people of these small towns that contribute to the larger picture that makes Americans who and what we are today. The museum was closed when we drove through town, but we did walk the grounds in late afternoon and had a very relaxing time.

After reading several reviews we decided this was the place we would spend the afternoon post Missoula Marathon with the family. There really is a lot to offer. For a family of 5, admission was just $10. Inside the main building were exhibits on the Vietnam War told from the perspective of a local French American from Missoula who was also a photographer; a quilt section with old 19th century quilts from the area; an introduction to the museums exhibits with a 10 minute video on repeat, exiting onto the grounds you could walk through the green grass and explore the internment camp, an old school building, the iron train, the fire observation lookout station which was closed, and we ended our tour at the beautiful garden. While this wasn't the largest historic museum, it had a good home towny feel. Everything was chill and relaxing. You could really feel the history too. I think you would enjoy it too.

This was such a cool find, we love to take the kids to places where they will have fun and learn a lot and this place was an awesome fit! It is out of town and a little hard to find but I just googled the directions and it led me pretty close! There is an old look out tower that the kids loved to visit lots of older equipment, steam train, and plenty of older buildings that were full of of time appropriate clothing, items and furniture and lots of informational plaques that we enjoyed reading! Honestly this place was so amazing and filled with so much information I don't think we were able to take everything in and we spent over 2 hours here so we are already planning our next visit to Missoula so we can return!!

We love the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula for its beautiful setting, authenticity, and special displays. The outbuildings are well-preserved and the historically significance of the Fort is accurately explained. This is a wonderful place to walk as well. Recent improvements to the area include an events pavilion and athletic fields.

Smokejumpers have a perilous duty, to fight wildfires deep in the back country where little equipment or people can reach. That is to say unless you want to jump out of a plane that is! The Missoula Smokejumpers Visitor center gives you a brief history of what their profession entails, it's history, technological advancements and a glimpse at a firefighter that gets to experience fighting fires on a whole other level. Born from this location in 1939 (first tested in 1935) Missoula is the founding site of Smokejumpers in the US forestry service. Gwynn our tour guide showed us around the Region 1 center for Smokejumpers and fire center. Seeing how these brave souls live, practice and develop the needed skills to do the incredible things that they do was astounding. Mind you this is a very small visitor center at the tail end of the Missoula commuter airport runway (not attached to the terminal). The guided tour will last roughly 30min or so but you're more than welcome to tour the visitor center and explore and learn some interesting facts about the legacy of this profession. I am grateful to the brave men and women for all the work they do (which is more than just firefighting including search & rescue among other tasks) to get the job done. I commend you all and God bless the work you do.

Somehow, I stumbled upon the Missoula Butterfly house and Insectarium and was the highlight of my work trip! I reserved my ticket for the 10 AM slot, and it was not very busy except for a class field trip which I thought would be such a cool experience for the Young'n's. They were very respectful and had small groups in at a time. I was in there for a good hour. The butterfly house alone, I swear, there were hundreds of butterflies! They were flying all over and was so precious. I really enjoyed how they had it set up with beautiful flowers and plants, as well as some plates with fruits that the butterflies enjoyed. They also had baby quails running around, which are the cutest chicks ever. Watch where you step!! It's about 90 degrees in the house to keep the butterflies comfortable with mist going to keep it pleasant. Besides the butterfly house, they have a whole insect exhibit that you can look and learn something (called 'Insectarium'). When I got done with the butterflies, I went into the main part and there was no one there except for volunteers (kids had left) -- btw What a cool place to volunteer at. So I decided to educate myself with some 'creepy crawler' facts. I was able to hold a beetle and walking stick, which was pretty sweet. The volunteers are super nice and very knowledgeable. This is a must do when visiting Missoula. I believe it is all year and relatively cheap to do ($10). They also have events like a bug&brew in the evening. I hear weekends are busy, so middle of the week was perfect. This location is nearby the fairgrounds with a a garden you can walk through nearby. I will be back next time I'm in town!

I wanted to see the tourist sites before returning home and my friend, who lives in Missoula, took me here and it was a good experience. It was on the Monday after, in the afternoon, and it felt like everything was deserted. Only a few cars that were parked in random places. I had a feeling that this place closed shop early. While I know it's just a historic site and tourist attraction, there could have been a bit more of a crowd, but sadly there wasn't. Probably it was due to being on a Monday during work hours. It was nice seeing Fort Missoula in its beauty. How the Fort was back in the 1800's and how modern day barracks crop up around the property really reflected the changing landscape of the old and the new. I got a kick out of seeing the log cabin and the old locomotive that was sitting out there in the sunshine day after day. There wasn't much to see, since majority of the original fort has been removed and retrofitted with the modern day fixes and amenities. I'm not really sure if this is currently a real life functioning military base of some sort, but it's great to bear witness to some bit of history while visiting Missoula, Montana. I spent about 3 hours waking around and the museum was closed for the day. I guess I just missed them. I felt the history through my eyes and it helped clarify stuff that I never thought of while reading the history books until now. Worth an hour of your afternoon to explore and rediscover history.
