There's just so many things to say that are wonderful about this gem. We were told at the visitor…read morecenter that it is the second largest visited refuge in North America. The bison are truly breathtaking. If you get the chance to see them sit and watch for a while. We were able to do some hiking and picnic. There's also camping and fishing and boating, but we didn't do any of that on this trip. We picked up lots of pamphlets at the visitor center, so we can come back again and try again. They have lots of help at the visitor center and are glad to answer questions. They also have a great little gift shop if you want to pick up a treasure or a Momento for your visit. We took the time to take the scenic drive up to the top of Mount Scott walked around, took lots of photos. We met people from all over the world up there. It was pretty amazing. I can't wait to go back and do some more hiking. We did stop on the side of the road to look at the Longhorn cattle. There are some of the original stock from back on the turn-of-the-century or release from the bloodline it's pretty neat all these things that you can do while you're here visiting I highly recommend it. It's a great adventure not just for families but just solo if you wanna get out and explore.

I'm adding this stop to my road trip reviews for one reason. Post Cards!…read more Willy-nilly like we made a promise to our grandson to send a post card from every state we visit. Man oh man was that a hard promise to keep! We spent large chunks of time searching out those little suckers. Not every Flying J's, Loves or Petro station carries post cards & searching online for souvenir shops in small towns, more often than not, leaves you empty handed. One such internet search took us into Walmarts & drug stores...nothing. Driving through Arkansas we even found ourselves driving to a sweet elderly couples' residence to buy a pack of vintage Arkansas cards. It's a sad day indeed, at least in my opinion, when the postcard becomes outdated. Well, we discovered a little late that visitors centers near the state borders might just have postcards, if you're looking. This one did. And we left with a handful of free brochures & books on local history. Not to mention the goodies we bought: t-shirts, our state-shaped magnet & a stuffed buffalo for the Littles! We pulled up out of desperation, but it was worth the stop, for sure.

After reading it and growing up next to a diehard OU alum I called up the number and inquired about a tour. They were very helpful on short notice. When my Dad and I got there we were greeted and they made us feel welcomed. We were mistakenly put in the tour for prospective students and taken all over campus. The student tour guide knew her stuff and took us everywhere. In and out of class rooms, dorms, offices, reading rooms and more. She answered our questions when we had them and even let our group take a break here and there. The tour was a blast! When we got back to the visitors center after the tour was over the staff was nice and helped my Dad and I find our way back to the student union for lunch and where to buy t shirts and hats. If you have 3 hours or so and want to go on a neat walking tour filled with history, culture and people facebooking on their cellphone while riding a bike through campus then you should take the OU tour.

The info is not just limited to Wichita Falls. There was stuff for as far away as Port Aransas and Padre Island - a solid 8 hour drive! In addition to the brochures, maps, coupon books and pamphlets, the center had an amazingly clean restroom that was much appreciated as the coffee from earlier decided it was time to go. The girls liked the telescopes... One didn't work. There zero people at the park and several on the trails on the day we went. I was sad to see Porta potties ...but they were clean so there's that.
